Pardon my ignorance, how does "install full directX 9 runtime" work?  My video card supports directX 11 so I guess it is packaged with my video driver? And backward compatable?

Full details can be found here: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/1869003

As to being backwards compatible, yes and no. It installs dlls for DX9 that are only called when the programs need it. This is not an upgrade, downgrade, or anything like that. If you installed the complete version of DirectX 9c (not the runtimes) on a vista/7 computer, it would likely go haywire.

It should be backwards compatible, but not necessarily. Some of the DX9 libraries may be missing, and no, they're not included with your driver.

*bah* Surango beat me to it.

It's usually a good idea to check the site every so often too to see if there's an update. Having three working versions of DirectX is kind of silly on Microsoft's part. When the discontinue XP older games are probably going to be screwed.

I'm getting immortal zombies. Glitch? And my master lock picker sometimes can't open locked chests. .__. Also, a glitch?

Edit: Also, my game keeps crashing in the middle of my fight with the Archdemon. :( *sigh*

I never crashed in the first few hours of playing, then once I got to the woods and up the hill to speak with the elven mage, it crashes when she's trying to speak, always. I can't get past that part. The sound usually cuts out strangely by making a buzzing noise then my whole pc freezes. I'm then forced to restart.

Specs:

Win7 64-bit

Phenom 9850 2.5GHz quad core

6GB 800MHz Ram

2x ATI radeon HD 3870 512mb GDDR4 video cards (running in CFX)

No idea what the problem is, can anyone help?

Just to add to the list and speaking up for some who has posted elsewhere, the Chargen.

It dislikes new .mops even if the chargenmorphcfg xml is correct.

I haven't been able to get my own home-made face in since the 1.03 patch. Everyone else's .mops are working, mine are working for some other lucky people except for me. It was working prior 1.03...

I'm not sure if it has already been mentioned in this thread yet (there's no function available to search just this thread so it's difficult to verify) but with Awakening installed (and therefore patch 1.03), the floor puzzle in Honnleath appears to be rather bugged. The floor tiles no longer function properly, either not allowing what would have been eligible tiles to move around or the path of the flame arcs in bizarre patterns that have nothing to do with the direction indicated by the tile.

I've solved this puzzle quite a few times before so barring some very early onset of Alzheimer's, it appears that something in either 1.03 or Awakening has resulted in some unforeseen complications with this puzzle.

Reading through this so frequently and seeing so many problems, I reckon that they will release a patch that will probably be as big as the expansion pack itself. I do not seem to be able to pass fighting the Inferno Golem with The Lost One, crashed about 10 times already.

I was playing DAO a while ago and the bugs still continue. I had just
entered the Anvil of the Void, talked with Bronka and fought my though
the tunnel toward the fist gauntlet when the auto save came on I and my
team were transported directly to Caridin, bypassing the gauntlets all
together.

Ok, if loosing Morrigan's Staff wasn't enough, I get to RedCliff and then to Denerim where everyone is running around killing darkspown when I noticed that Alister is running around in his birthday suit, with just his helmet on. Jesus ****ing Christ will the bull**** never end?!?

Best bug ever. I hope it happens to me. That ghost-spitting-totem thing is the most boring, annoying and drawn out fight in the whole game and is the only reason I don't look forward to Orzammar.

Don't forget that it also has brought an annoying stuttering, very noticeable in cutscenes.

Berserk deactivate itself after each battle or after quick-saving. This is very annoying.

OK, I had to laugh.  "Best Bug Ever" is worth remembering!  Hereby seconded, and heartily hope that I get to "spirit?" past the levitating, spinning Easter Island Head as well.

[Back to the (main?) topic of this thread.]

After several days of experimentation, here's what I can report (YMMV).

SysSpecs (for those inquiring minds who just gotta know):

PC (retail disc)

Win7 x64

Intel Core2Quad Q6600 2.4GHz

8GB RAM

nVidia GT240, 1GB VRAM

Mods:

All official DLC (What can I say? I'm a sucker for a story...)

Equal Love (won't play without)

Dialogue Tweaks (" ")

Polygamey (more fun that way)

Improved Atmosphere (" ")

Practical Female Dalish Armour

PineappleTree's Vibrant Colours

Lelianan & Morrigan Face Morphs

du_nohat (why cover those now prettier faces?)

and, (in the interests of full disclosure, and depending on my mood)

DAModder to play around with NB's AIO (whatever the latest version is, mostly selecting RL's "flavours")

Tried the following "fixes" with a variety of PCs (2 Rogues and a Mage) using a variety of saves from three different complete play-throughs plus, my current PC as an elven Warrior.;

[Minor Spoiler Alert]

1. A full un-install/re-install, then patch directly to 1.03 did *NOT* solve Crash to Desktop (CtD) problem.

First instance occurred (for me) in fight with Marjolaine. Not sure what her weird "stun all the time" spell is, but casts an orange aura and when I had Lelianan toss a shock bomb into the fray, grenade...) Next CtD was during once of the "not-so-random-journey battles" on the streets of Denerim as I headed back from the Pearl to the Market District.

[/Minor Spoiler Alert]

2. Still couldn't get Pickpocketing to work, even with the "Steal_Dog_CD" fix (I think Jallard provided that.)

3. Un-install/re-install, then patch to 1.02, (saving "Settings" and "Saved Games") worked fine. Played through the fight with Marjolaine, tested with several earlier saves and didn't have any problems except the ever-increasing load times for transitions.

3. Installed DirectX-9 runtime libraries as suggested elsewhere, then re-installed patch 1.03. CtD returned!

4. Rolling back to 1.02 as I post this via the complete copy of "C:\\Program Files(x86)\\Dragon Age" folder on a 2nd drive that I made before I performed the 1.03 patch update. This still takes about 15 minutes on my rig, but that's much better than doing the un-install/re-install!

Received my (pre-ordered from Amazon, arrived a week after release date, see if I do *that* again!) copy of DA:A. You can bet in won't get installed until either a) an official patch-for-the-patch is released, or B) someone can confirm that WinXP users aren't having the CtD (I'll live with the stealling) problem. I could be tempted to try loading then entire game in a VM and seeing if the problem(s) go away.

Not sure what all this really means, except what we already know: Patch 1.03 is, indeed, an epic fail!

Most people are reporting that (with the retail version) they're not having problems on XP. Before you switch computers though, have you tried this? social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/1869003

Win Xp using DirectX 9, Win Vista using DirectX 10 and Win 7 using DirectX 11. like mine, still using X1650 512 PRO AGP (DX9 version) can only use DX 9 in XP, Vista and 7.people with Nvidia GTX 295 (DX10 version) can only use DX 9 in XP, Vista DX10 and 7 DX10.people with HD5970 (DX11 version) can only use DX 9 in XP, Vista DX 10 and 7 DX11.like i said above, if you are using GTX 295 in Win 7, it will not using DX11.

I'm still using XP for my gaming even my pc capable using win 7.because of incompatibility and stability problem, i switch back to XP.just one thing i encounter in awakening is badly lag and buggy gameplay. i believe the patch cure loading time(not entirely) but it trigger some thing else.my comment on Awakening, totally lot of annoying bug than Origins.

I have WIN XP SP 3 as well. I also have an EVGA GeForce 9800 GT video card. I also have an AMD Athlon II X2 250 3.0GHz processor. This morning when I tried to play I would start the game and as soon as it opened, to where I left off last night,  it would crash to the desktop. It did that 6 times in a row.

Retail or digital version of the game? Also, that sounds more like a driver issue. Is it up to date? You'd know if you had an unsupported card by the blinking trees. Seeing as how you've never mentioned those, I'm guessing it's on the list.

My recipe for no more crashes! Posted Image

After getting stuck in the final battle of both DA:Origin and Awakening because of crashes (crashes that has plagued me since the 1.03 patch came), I finally remembered an old solution from the SWKOTOR game: Lock the game to only use one processor!

In details (on Windows Vista 32bit): Open Task Manager, find "DAOrigins.exe" (or "Steam.exe" before launching the game from steam), rightclick and choose "Set affinity..." and then lock affinity to only one CPU (ie: Clear the check marks from all except one CPU.)

After that I finally could complete the final battle in both games without any crashes!

My system spects:
ATI Radeon HD 4800 series (Catalyst version 10.3 - newest drivers)
AMD Phenom II X3 720 @ 2.8GHz
Gibabyte motherboard, fully updated drivers
Windows Vista 32bit, fully updated
3+ GB RAM (has 4GB but the last cannot be accessed by 32bit windows)

And actually, with those specs the game runs fine on just one core Posted Image, hope this can help others who have been just as frustared about the game as I have been!

Looks like my original theory is still a working one. I'm betting something got corrupted in the 1.03 patch for digital customers. Seems people with a retail version of the game are having far less problems.

I had that once in 1.02. There's a loose script somewhere for sure.
