What flames me is that everybody in the gaming industry are not really reporting anything disastrous with the game and are doing interviews with people from bioware who promote future stuff for the game, yet in interviews there is no mention of how the game seem to be broken for a big bunch of people. Nor Bioware coming here and offering an olive branch to people but still wanting to cash in on the game.

This is really frustrating to me, too. GameRankings.com reports Awakening averaging a favorable 79.89% review score. It's really shattered my faith in the media's ability to competently review games. Maybe it's a symptom of cross-platform games, i.e., they only tested Awakenings on X-Box 360. Maybe they're all shills feeding from the game industry's trough. Maybe the market is too saturated and they feel forced to rush out cursory reviews to beat their competitors with the first review. Maybe they're louts too lazy to actually play through the game. Irrespective, consumers are screwed. With games quickly approaching the $100 price point and the lack of reliable reviews, we'll be stuck with wasting a lot of money on bad games.

Slightly similar experience - sometimes a monster just freezes (not because of any spell effects) and stops attacking, just standing there taking hits, then snaps out of it after a few seconds. Well, okay, if they want to die I don't really mind but it happened once to my PC and that wasn't so funny. I get the impression it's a script engine glitch (as if their attack scripts have trapped out), rather than, say, a graphics problem. Can't reproduce it, though.

I've had something like this happen, but usually in larger groups. The frame rate is what it usually is but all effects (not visual) and damage get delayed.

Ok! Where do I start?

All this time I have been complaining about the bugs and the Awakening expansion. I was basing my (ignorant) opinions solely upon what I was reading here in the forums. That being said, I want to openly apologize for my asinine rantings. With all of the trouble that I was having woth GameStop Online and not receiving the Awakening and such, I went to Pioneer Square to the GameStop store this morning and purchased a copy and installed it.

I just got done clearing out the Vigile Keep and I was relatively impressed --so far. I even used a character in the original game that was only at level 8: An Elf Mage in fact.

The installation went very smoothly and thus far I have not seen any bugs nor has my game crashed in almost two hours of play time.

Again, I apologize to everyone! Thank you.

You were going to storm congress, give a TV station access to your BW account, ect over nerd rage?! Jallard, my friend, you cannot listen to nerd rage. That would be like following me through a mountain. You'd get lost, go mad, or get eaten. Lesson learned, I hope.

I'm willing to give this fix a try. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the exe file to change. I have a DAOriginsLauncher.exe file and a daorigins.exe file (note the S on the end). Should I be modifying one of these files? If so, do I need to change the script in the start.bat file? Or am I just looking in the wrong place? Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Please modify the header of daorigins.exe file, the missing "s" is a typo error, maybe the 1.03 patched has affected my keyboard too Image IPB

You have to modify start.bat, replacing fallout3.exe with daorigins.exe before to run against the file.

Hope it will help,

u made my day!!!
The game now slowsdown for 1-3 sec where it usually crashes, then u can play on without problems!
So if this solves the prob, how come Bioware can't?!!?!?

Just to add onto this thread so that this is not lost. The crash problem is NOT confined to Win 7 or 64 bits. I am using Vista 32 bits and the DAO patch 1.03 has been crashing my otherwise very stable game.

true, played the game on another pc (in my office) on vista x64 and crashes....so the whole 1.03-thing sux...*thumbs up :(

After downloading Patch 1.03, my game had a bug where i had no stamina or mana. I also had a problem with having my party attack creatures, when i tell them to attack, they follow the creature around but never actually swing there weapons and vice versa, the enemies swing there weapons but never hurt me. My mage casts spells but they do not hurt my enemies. this only happened after downloading DAO Patch v1.03.... I removed the patch files from the patch folder and that fixed the stamina and mana issues, but my party and enemies still don't do damage. Has anyone had the same issue as me? If so please inform me of any solution.

WTF were you doing complaining in the first place if you didn't actually have the game and weren't experiencing any issues? You're just the kind of guy that pipes in with the crowd to be one of the cool kids?

Fool.

That being said, the CTD issue is VERY real and needs fixing ASAP.

Hi Sarakaster,

Happy to see it works also for your configuration.
I am quite sure that this trick (http://social.biowar...3999/31#2037048)  really fix nearly all CTD, at least on 64 bit OS and maybe for 32 bit OS (in this case don't forget to modify the boot.ini to allow large memory access, as described in the doc included in the archive).

For your last question, please consider that the problem seems relative to memory allocation/reservation.

This is usually something that is under system (OS) control and it maybe hard for a develloper to monitor when the code bypass some OS limitations.

In my experience, dev's are not system guru and expert system engineers are rarely present in developpement teams.

So, in this case, it is possible that the code is correct but in some case, it asks the system more memory that it can give, causing CTD's.

In my opinion, OS code is a part of the problem, at least it should log something more clear on the cause of the error.

I am not aggressive with Bioware teams in this particular case, I had seen exactly same problems with other games and it is not something easy to identify for a develloper.

I was experiencing issues in and with DAO and the CTD after istalling the 1.03 patch. In addition, since I have installed the Awakening which also installed the 1.03 patch, I have only crashed once in eight hours of continous play. That occurred in the Silverite mine fighting drakspawn in one of the caverans.

As for calling me a fool, I have been called worse. No apology necessary.

Hi
Have done a quicksearch on the threads, didn't find anything relative to CTD or crash issues that many players have (removing some processors via proccessor affinity has some drowback on performance and is not a solution) and that seems to be fixed following the instructions given here:
http://social.biowar...3999/31#2037048
As you can read in my posts, I am not in a fight with bioware, just try to help solving this real problem in a GREAT game.
I'd like to be sure that the CTD are not ignored here, understand that it is very frustrating to buy a game and to be unable to play more than 5 mn without a crash (it was my case before applying the fix).

To speculate:

I think that Bioware is aware of the faulty nature of the game and cannot really fix it. I would say that is why they have already announced dragon age 2 which will probably be coded differently. I remember a similar scheme with empire total war wherein empire was real buggy but Napoleon seemed to be tuned better.

Mass Effect 2 is EA and Bioware's cash cow for now since it is easier to code a shooter than a ARPG.

I think at some point people are gonna get real fed up with this game and how it is handled and it will die a quick and horrible death, which in truth would sadden me. I do not want to see this game fail because it as tremendous potential but horrible after sales service.

I'm thinking that all the reviews that are now being posted
on the Internet are from the console version of the game. I think most reviews
now are like that. They just assume that the game is the same on the PC. Since
most review sites/mags have had to cut way back on expenses/staff they don’t
have the man power or the time to play through all the different versions of
games anymore.

I might be wrong, but I bet I’m not. This way all they need
is a 360/PS3 and they’re good to go. They don’t have to spend the money on a
gaming rig or a person to play the PC game. I posted the same thing way back
about 30 pages. I've read a ton of stuff about the game and the expansion, and
not one word about problems. PC Gamer mag, used to report bug problems and they
would score the game according to if it was buggy or not. That was back a few
years. Now they gush over anything the Bioware puts out.

I consider Awakening to be unplayable because the only way
to play it is with the 1.03 patch, which totally screws up both games. This has
got to be the worsted case of a AAA company totally blowing of their PC market.
I guess we are so small compared to the 360/PS3 juggernaut, it's just easy for
them to give us the shaft. As long as their bottom line isn't affected, then
they just don't care about us anymore.

I was really hoping that I'd come back in here and see that
EA had replied and things where looking up. I really can't believe this.

What I really would like to know is how wide spread this
problem is. For all the posts here (and I’ve read every one) it would seem to
me to be massive, since it is hitting across every PC config. There hasn’t been
one config that is not affected. This is a very bad problem. And the kicker is
that Bioware/EA MADE THIS HAPPEN. They broke the game with the patch. They made
the patch so they could sell the expansion.. I know the US is having a rough
time right now, but to be this greedy is unforgivable.

I’m I the only one that feels this way? Am I wrong? Please
tell me I have it wrong. I want to be wrong. I want this all to be a
misunderstanding and any day now I’m be about to play the games I paid over $80
for. Do you guys think what EA is doing is a crime? After all they have to know
they have broken the game, yet they are continuing to promote not only the expansion,
but the 1.03 patch for people that just have DA:O , It still comes up on my
start up screen, which is hard to believe after all this time . If they pulled
the patch, then things would start making since. But nope, hundreds of thousand
of PC gamers have DL’ed the patch thinking it was going to fix their game. A
lot of them don’t even know you have to have it to run Awakening.

Oh and lets not forget about the pickpocket bug that 1.03
introduced. I know for myself I used that skill for most of the game. I got a
ton of loot that way, and it made the game more fun for me.

OK I’m done. Let me know if I’m wrong OK. Thanks.

Whenever I try to install the patch, the DOS window checks out everything fine, but when the next phase of implementing the patch begins, I get the following error message:

Running external installer for 'RT Patch'...this may take a few moments...
-36

Then a Windows critical error message:
An error occurred applying the 1.03 patch to your version of Dragon Age: Origins: [36]
I'm assuming that this was because of the stuff I had in my override folder, so I moved all my override files into a backup file and ran it again, and it still gave me the same message.  For some damn fool reason, Dragon Age installed itself in both My Documents and in Program Files, and I removed the override files from both of them, ran it again, and got the same message.  Please don't tell me I'll have to uninstall and reinstall the game; I know that something tremendously karked up will happen to my character and I'll have to start over.  I want to beat it at least once before I have to reinstall it.  Any advice?

The CtD solution (at least for those of us running 64-bit with more than 4GB RAM) posted by akanounnikoff , located at: http://social.biowar...3999/31#2037048 has worked *extremely* well for me.

Still had one CtD after entering "Denerim uner Siege", but that's a whole lot better than the "every-time I'm-in-combat" I was experiencing before.

Bouncing across multiple saves with mutiple characters and enoying the "much-better-than-1.02" load times, without missing pickpocketing too much...

It was a lot of fun fighting the last battle again in order to test whether (using a certain built-in "zz" command) it were possible to a) reject Morrigan's offer, B) not die, c) not allow Alistair to die, and d) still defeat the Archdemon. Answer: "Yes!"

So thanks again, akanounnikoff, I think I'm about ready to give DA:A a try now!

akanounnikoff's solution seems to have worked for me as well. After updating to 1.03 I was getting random CTD's, especially in Denerim. After using his solution, been playinga bit over an hour so far with no troubles. Thanks again for finding this fix out!

I feel the same way. I bought Awakening but it's still in shrink wrap as I hope that Bioware would one day fix this game. From the way it looks, I'm probably going to just resell the expansion on eBay unopened. I used to snap up Bioware games as soon as they come out as I've had many good times with the BG series and the like. Now I'm going to have to start taking a more cautious stance by trolling forums for their future games and only purchasing if there are no major issues. I won't go as far as saying I'll never buy another Bioware game again but I will say I'll never buy one that a lot of people are having the same issues with as this is no longer the Bioware I trusted way back who used to actually acknowledge and fix problems.

Does that fix help with the slow down I've noticed associated with patch 1.03? Or is it just the CTDs. The slow down has been pretty gruesome for me.

Seems that the Empire Total War flop with patches becomes more of a rule these days... That game had 5 patches and all of them brought more problems then they solved.

It`s probably a memory addressing experiment gone rogue, and there wasn`t enough time to fix it. Return to Ostagar could be delayed a week to resolve problems, but Awakening is a bigger project...
