Seems that the Empire Total War flop with patches becomes more of a rule these days... That game had 5 patches and all of them brought more problems then they solved.

It`s probably a memory addressing experiment gone rogue, and there wasn`t enough time to fix it. Return to Ostagar could be delayed a week to resolve problems, but Awakening is a bigger project...

Which would make you think they'd delay it as well. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'd rather wait a week or a month and do a huge project right the first time. Kind of brings back memories of AOL where only a fool would download the latest version when it came out.

Does that fix help with the slow down I've noticed associated with patch 1.03? Or is it just the CTDs. The slow down has been pretty gruesome for me.

Hi,

Really don't know, you'll have to try it.

I noticed the pickpocketing issue also, but didn't catch that the patch had anything to do with it until I read this thread.

Also ran into an issue where my Blood Dragon Chestpiece disappeared when I got thrown in prison after Trian was killed in the Dwarf Noble storyline (this was supposedly fixed in 1.02, but is now an issue again in 1.03).

Also ran into a placement bug when talking to the Proving Master in the Proving Grounds in the Dwarf Noble storyline if I just wanted to watch the proving, not fight in it.  If I talked to him with Gorin as the active character, the Proving Master & other characters would be moved to the balcony, but you would be stuck in the same place.  Furthermore, even if you did get down to the balcony, just talking to the Royal Escort would bump you back up to where you entered the proving arena.

This patch actually causes more problems than fixing them; I'm tempted to revert back to 1.02 reguardless of the fact that the Feastday packs require 1.03 to use them (which was the only reason I installed it in the first place).  I've deleted the save that I found these bugs on considering I missed out on a number of early game items.  I think I'll wait until a new patch is released before I fire up this game again.  Posted Image

How come a post listing known issues in 1.03 isn't stickied at the top of the forums? I had to search high and low for a bug list and this is all I could come up with. Can't find a list of known issues anywhere for Dragon Age Origins....

Whenever I try to install the patch, the DOS window checks out everything fine, but when the next phase of implementing the patch begins, I get the following error message:

Running external installer for 'RT Patch'...this may take a few moments...
-36

Then a Windows critical error message:
An error occurred applying the 1.03 patch to your version of Dragon Age: Origins: [36]
I'm assuming that this was because of the stuff I had in my override folder, so I moved all my override files into a backup file and ran it again, and it still gave me the same message.  For some damn fool reason, Dragon Age installed itself in both My Documents and in Program Files, and I removed the override files from both of them, ran it again, and got the same message.  Please don't tell me I'll have to uninstall and reinstall the game; I know that something tremendously karked up will happen to my character and I'll have to start over.  I want to beat it at least once before I have to reinstall it.  Any advice?

BW uses a patching program that doesn't handle errors gracefully.  I had this same type of issue when installing patch 1.02 over patch 1.01.  I was able to fix it using instructions from this forum, which included figuring out which file was causing the patching program to barf, and then going into an archive on the DA:O disk and extracting a new "vanilla unpatched" copy.  Good luck with trying that--if you're sufficiently technical you can make it work but it's not trivial.

I've had *very* good results with just backing up the directory for a character that includes all the save data, and copying that over to a second PC (I decided to keep my first PC at 1.02 until 1.03 is fixed and/or the toolset is updated, but also wanted to play Awakening).  I'd recommend you back up your saved games, re-install from scratch with the 1.03 patch, and restore your saves.

Either way, there's no simple way to deal with the issue you're seeing....

I just installed it this morning, now my charcters won't fight in combat, nor will the enemies, they just stand around. When one does strick, there is no damage done. I wish I wouldn't have downloaded this patch. I don't want to reinstall my game just when it was really getting good!

That's a new one!  Haven't heard of this particular behavior after installing 1.03, although some of us have seen critters, specifcally werewolves in the Brecialian Forest, who just stand around.  There's some indication that this particular issues is NOT 1.03-related...)

As far as a fix.  Having done it about a half-dozen times now, I can say that a full un-install/re-install is not really very painful.  Helps (psychologically, anyway) to have a backup-up of the program files as well as the save/chars folder. That's how I rolled back from 1.03 to 1.02 (the second time I did it) to confirm that 1.03 was causing the CtD.

Have not had any hiccoughs when selecting the option to keep my saved games and chars, but felt better knowing I had another copy "just in case."

Now, I did this with the retail PC DVD and downloaded copies of all three patches (1.01a, 1.02, and 1.03) available locally. Only way I run.  Don't trust/won't use Steam or D2D!

And I cannot thank akanounikoff enough for his (her?)  posting of the "Fallout3" fix that cured my 1.03 CtDs!

I'm not going to bother with the new patch. I've not got a lot of time on my hands and the improvements with the patch, such as they are, seem trivial at best. I'll wait for a day off and a fix before I go dithering around with file backups and all the horror stories I've read so far about this patch. Just wish I hadn't dumped my 240 Bioware Points on the Feastday Gifts I can't even use! :(

You are getting ahead of yourself. Please finish the expansion than come back and re-think what you said. If you had a flawless polished experience I would love to hear it. Because I have not seen anyone post saying it was a wonderful bug free expansion / patch and I loved every aspect.

Anyway stopped by seeing if Bioware had any word on a patch for the patch.....looks like a big no....bugs with 1.3 patch is the top thread right now in PC support. Well gone for another week or so....in the meantime my copy of Awakenigs will continue to collect dust and act as a coaster.

Ninja's are watching us.

I have to agree with you on this one.  My only reason for installing the patch was because the Feastday packs required it & they are useless to me after reinstalling back to 1.02a.  Perhaps I'll be able to use them again once they fix the new bugs in this seriously disappointing patch, but I think I'm going to check the requirements for DLC & do my homework about required patches before I buy them now.  Posted Image

I had unlocked the Arcane Warrior specilisation for my character but not reached level 14 to "purchase" the ability, after i installed the patch it now says that the specilisation has not been unlocked but the quest says it is done. I don't know if this is because of the update but they happened around the same time.

1.03 patch bug ever since the patch my game crashes if combat runs more than 2 minutes. First it slows down then it freezes then crashes. Before the patch I ran the Game Video at max. Now it crashes on on lowest settings and over heats. This is the worst patch they ever gave me for any game. Now it's unplayable as I cannot Keep doing a Hard shutdown (IE POWER BUTTON) I would ruin my PC. And not even control Alter delete works.

Really dose suck. And Again Biowear pretending there no problem!!! It's Like MassEffect 1 heat problem all over again. They act like if they pretend there is no problem it will go away.

I have a DW warrior ready to go to war in awakenings with very few problems so far. Only reason she's parked is because I wanted to try something besides a DW character. (both of my origins play throughs were DW one rogue one warrior)

There are bugs, but I can't say it's unplayable (for me, anyway). My crashes usually happen after several hours of straight play, which is annoying, but a good indicator to get off my arse for a while. Stealing, check the signature. I'll be glad when BW fixes it though so it's no longer needed.

I noticed freezing issues in my game after 1.03 also, although it didn't usually result in a crash; just a few seconds of waiting for the game to pick back up. Regaurdless, there needs to be an update on the 1.03 patch before I'm going to install it again.

I've noticed some issue with the character portrait generation since 1.03. The pictures that should be uploaded to the social site are often totally black. I've also lost the portraits of 2 of my characters and I haven't played with them since 1.03.

Yes and mine look like the neon lights of Broadway!  Sheese.  I think they may have unfixed somthing they fixed before.   Prior to this patch they had the same issues then I think one of the other patches seemed to cure this problem.
But here we are again.   As a wiseman once said, "the hurrier you go the behinder you get!".

I kind of remembered something I did in the 1.02a patch.  I went and updated my video drivers; I have nvidia video cards and nvidia does update the drivers frequently.  Sure enough there was a newer driver (just) and I updated.  When I went back into the game the neon lights went away.
Something to try.

I followed this link and downloaded the software because I too have the stuttering problem with my CPU running at 100%. I then get the intermittend crashes - all of which occured after 1.03. Never had a problem before.

However, after I installed the application, there is no executable file to run the program. The link said to "follow the instructions." Well, after installing this, what next?

I realize this is not the tech support forums but just wanted to add my voice to those who once had no problems and now the game becomes almost unplayable at times. I hoped that the above advice would fix the problem - but I am missing something.

Oh, and in my case, it does not seem to be a "mod" problem as no matter what DAzips I have installed, or uninstalled, or what is in the override, or not in the override (almost exclusively armor and textures), the same stuttering, CPU usage and CTD's happen on a regular basis. Sometimes I can play for several hours - other times, less than fifteen minutes. I have got to quick saving before and after every transition, battle, and walking around for more than a few minutes.

Inside the DX folder you extracted the files to there is a setup executable. The install process for this is kind of like for drivers you download- an exe that acts like a zip/rar archive to extract files to another folder then you have to go into that folder to actually set it up.

Bioware's innability at game-fixing and patch-making never ceases to amaze me.

And how is it possible that we are already at v1.3 and many of the major bugs are *still* not fixed?
Examples from the wiki:
Crossbows remain attribute-less; Ranged Attack Speed Bugs persist; +X% Healing Received Bug was not addressed.

Heck, this patch introduces MORE bugs than the it removes.

Long story short, had the same issue:

game would crash due to memory leak in 10-15 min

memory leak made me restar windows every time this happened

i have a beautiful laptop capable of running other hightech games etc.

What worked for me, after SEVERAL (about 3 or4 times) uninstalling of ATI drivers and the CATALYST tool, (with driver sweeper or something), ive managed to run the game for about an hour without problems, and to my surprise it was a conflict between drivers, all i can do is show you my stats... hope I can help some of you, if it works please spread the word to other ATI users. Anyway I really think those issues (memory leak, and CTD happen due to a conflict between drivers)

I've been crashing a lot lately during combat from awakening as well but it hardly happened to me after I set all the graphics to low and didn't cast mana clash (not sure if this was a cause but I read someone was crashing because of it) I managed to finish the game when I was about 3/4 through with maybe one crash.

Hey guys, any 1.03a out yet? I have not looked into this thread for quite some time. In fact this forum. And I am surprised that we are still talking about 1.03 bugs and crashes and BioWare is supposed to have been "collecting data" for quite some time?

I really wish this game to be patched up so that I can buy Awakening and play. Soon it will be off the shielf and I won't even get to play it, lol.

This is rather sad, really. Having to adjust the graphics to low just to get through the game. I wonder how the developers would feel to see that their hard work has reduced into some low quality graphics in real life. I feel for you. Not sure what graphic card you have. Mine is ATI 5850. No way I am gonna settle for low quality graphics on that card of mine (I have a pretty decent processor too). And ya, patch 1.03 crashes my DAO from time to time.
