Hello I've just got this game last week, I think it's a really good game although I find myself struggling with some of the fights.  I'm using alistair sten and morrigan and I am a human mage, and although some fights can be easy others I win just with one party member left alive, and quite a few i've had to reload multiple times.

I'm playing on normal difficulty, and am starting to think i should have started on easy :P

Anyway any advice would be apprieciated

Well it's kinda difficult to give advice like that... care to elaborate on your party setup ? What talents & spells do your characters use, how did you raise their stats ? What kind of equipment do they have ? What kind of fights are giving you the most trouble (boss fights or being swarmed by lots of weak enemies ?)

Ok, from your profile, I see your PC is the party healer. Since you have 2 warriors in the party, I'd try to juggle the attention of the monster between them with taunt. Cast regeneration on whoever is taking damage as soon as their health drops. You may want to take the spirit healer spec if you haen't already, group heal is awesome.

If you're having difficulty, playing on casual is nothing to be ashamed of.

Get high approval from Wynne and talk to her about it. If you're having trouble with tanking, let your tank get in a few hits before you start using magic. Use Taunt when there are are a few enemies nearby, then use your ice spells to freeze groups of mobs. Blizzard is good when you have a choke point (like a door or a narrow hallway or something similar, Glyph of Repulsion is nice to keep them in the storm). Walking Bomb/VWB are nice spells for knocking out groups of mobs. Give your warriors/rogues ranged weapons and open fire from a distance, that will help your tank pull aggro as well.

You can buy a spirit healer book from, I think Varathorn in Brecillian forest if I remember right, or you can get your approval rating up with Wynne and I believe she'll teach you.

As for help with battles, if you have the full ice line and stone fist, try to cone of cold as many enemies as possible and then throw stone fist at a frozen white enemy, have Sten use mighty blow against another frozen white enemy, and have Alistair use overpower or assault on one. That can kill three straight off if you get a little lucky with your shatters, and can stop multiple enemies from attacking for a time.

I'd suggest learning up to glyph of repulsion in the glyph tree as you started it already--you can lay a glyph of paralysis on top of a glyph of repulsion for a neat effect. I'd also suggest working toward sleep and/or mass paralysis for more crowd control. Crowd Control can make the game much easier if you have good area of effect spells.

Also, get a good amount of survival skill on one of your characters, and you can use blizzard around corners or into rooms with the doors still closed to damage/slow down/repeatedly freeze enemies before they even know you're there. You don't need line of sight for blizzard, but you have to have enough survival to detect the enemies in order to cast at them.

Other than that, just realize that this game IS hard, and if you like a challenge leave it on normal and learn as you go. If you don't, there's no shame in putting it on easy.

Wiki says: You can buy this tome in Denerim, from the Tranquil Proprietor in Wonders of Thedas for 15 G.

You can also buy the manual from the vendor in the Warden's Keep after you complete that quest.

Thanks for the help. I think I'll stick with normal as easy with no friendly fire might be a bit easy when playing a mage, although I might start a new a game with a rogue on easy at some point. I just completed wardens keep although i think i managed it mainly coz i'd been there a few levels before and ran away coz it was too hard, so it was pretty easy when i went back.

But i got some better gear from there so maybe it won't be as hard now. I hadn't really bought any gear for my warriors i dont think that helped :P I had spent all my money on ability tomes for me lol

The ameliorating thing is, you have to unlock them just once. A cheesier option is just to save a game at a vendor, buy the book, unlock and then reload - voilá, the ability is unlocked. Wynne, I'm not sure about, but Alistair tells the templar, Zev assassin, Leili bard, Oghren Berseker, Kolgrim Reaver and Arl Eamon (Loghain) the champion specifications.

I bungled through my first play a lot. Gradually, I learned how to use more spells, which spells were best for given situations, spell combinations, using pause a LOT, pulling enemies back to your group, and setting up tactics (very useful for healing). Even though you have healers, sometimes they are best used to cast crowd control spells and damage (like paralyze, etc) with your warriors sucking up lots of health poultices. So, creating lots of health poultices (say, 20 of lesser-normal-greater) is very helpful so your warriors can help themselves out in a pinch.

I played the first time on 'easy' as a rogue and found it hard at the beginning. I'd gone straight to Redcliffe and had problems there. Going back to Lothering and waiting until Morrigan could get a heal spell was what got me through it.

The second time, I'm playing on normal and not having problems. Last time I was holding on to all my potions and health poultices in case I needed them later. If you have a herbalist, it's fine to use them as you can make more. I set party tactics to consume poultices when low on health. That made a big difference, because the healing is then just supplementary, and you're free to heal non-companion NPCs if needed.

I do switch back to 'easy' just so that I can rush through some of the more boring parts, then switch back to 'normal' when it's more interesting.  I think it gets easier as you go along and get used to the tactics.

Be sure to use *Pause* alot the computer is dumb for the most part.  This game is like the games of old where it take Tactics and Strategy over hack and slash.

I had this same problem - remember that this is kind of just the way you play the game. Save a lot, change one or two things at the most from try to try (so you can isolate what worked), and then keep going at it. You'll be surprised how quickly you're bad**** when you do this.

i found that sleep was a great crowd control spell. it has a huge area of effect, takes no time to cast, and lasts for a good 30 seconds or so. just remember to hold your party's formation when you cast it or they'll start targeting enemies and waking them up. in addition, you can 1-hit-kill some mages in the early-mid game with Horror, and turn groups of enemies against each other with Waking Nightmare since sleeping enemies cannot resist either of these spells.

The game has a pretty steep learning curve at the beginning. Get used to it, the combat interface, spells and talents, etc, and you'll be violating the darkspawn in no time.
