I just did this twice on the IFF core and had no crashes, this isn't a fix but a position that I was in on the stage at the time that the blue light hits and usually crashes the game.

Alright, after you shoot the first three husks at the start, turn left and run down the platform then move up to the last set of stairs and up to the console in the center of the room in front of the IFF core. You'll then hear the IFF core start up and so I turned and looked right at it expecting a crash but there was none even with the dreaded blue light. Next the horde of husks will come at you so take them all out. After you take them out, move to the entrance of the IFF core, turn left and go back down the stairs once again then turn and move all the way forward until you come to the end of the platform. There will be an opening on the railing, stand up against it and then you can turn and get a clear shot right at the IFF core between a big cable and a piece of equipment with a pointy javelin looking thing on the top of it. I had the Collector Particle beam with me which I took out and unloaded on the IFF core until it shut and sent out the blue lightning and as close as I was too it and even looking right at it...NO CRASH!!! I did this again with the positioning until I destroyed the IFF core and then played the stage over again with no crashes so if anyone has a similiar setup as mine this could help you at least with the IFF crashes.

Seems we both chose the same character picture; I'm AllUltimas, as in "played all of the Ultima series up to Ultima IX: Ascention." Enjoyed Richard Garriot's games starting with an Apple 2+, then with PC starting at Ultima 6.

Thank you very much for the procedure to avoid the crash at the IFF Core in Mass Effect 2. As soon as I shot at the target box in the core-light, the game would crash. Tried different weapons, and did try going down the ramps before shooting, but nothing worked. Then your suggestion to go down the ramp and run up the left side to the gate AND come back to the bottom of the left ramp before shooting - worked !!! I can't begin to imagine why.

Cool, did this work for anyone else? I got a friend who's been playing my copy of ME2 up until the IFF crash so I have to try this out on his game too.

I have tried this method 5 times. Once, it just totally crashed like normal. The other 4 times I was able to get the core down to 25% health before I crashed the game. I was not using the particle cannon but the grenade launcher, so I will try it again with the different weapon outfit.

Glad it worked for some of you...I haven't played since the latest patch, can anyone tell me if the patch fixed the blue light crash?

Don't know bro. I was hoping that they would have patched this problem by now so I don't know what to tell you...sorry. I know how frustrating it can be to get so involved in this game and then have it stop like that.
