Also on the 'good sales': that's only compared to the N64, and only at first.  The N64 had pretty terrible console sales.  It's something like, 10mil total for the Dreamcast, 30-40mil total for the N64, and 140-150mil total for the PS2.  The N64 had like... what?  Three good games?  The Dreamcast had... um... Powerstone (which was barely advertised and mostly unknown)... I guess?  And Crazy Taxi (which was cross platform).... and yeah, I honestly can't think of any others.

But I guess poor advertising and poor libraries couldn't have possibly hurt Dreamcast or N64 sales once the PS2 was released, eh?  I guess the N64 must have had a lot of pirates too, right?

The failure of the Dreamcast lays solely on Sega's shoulders, and not because they didn't include an anti-piracy chip.

The Dreamcast was on the market for a total of a YEAR AND A HALF. You can't realistically compare its numbers to those of consoles who enjoyed multi-year life spans. The DC had a number of great exclusive titles, like the 2k sports series, Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue, Soulcalibur, Resident Evil Code: Veronica, Jet Grind Radio, Space Channel 5, etc. Before you start waving the "multiplatform" banner around, know that none of those titles were ported to other systems until after the Dreamcast was on its way to the cemetary.

Also Record of Lodoss War(had more fun with that than I did playing Diablo 2), Sword of Beserk: Guts' Revenge(big drawback was the game being too short, but still fun), and Virtual-On were other titles that were pretty good.

Cool story bro.

Go read a book if you don't want to fork over the money for the expansion pack.

Why isn't this thread locked?

hmm just going off OP, I advise shopping around

I have got Dragon Age:awakenings for £14.99

Great value for an expansion, I am seeing it as the ME2 to ME, whether I am wrong or not I will see, but long as it keeps the story going I will be a happy bunny, £14.99 is like a round of beer in the pub for me

Again, just because most of you are fanboys and have noting better to do than sit on Bioware's forums all day and pick peoples posts apart doesn't make you any authority on how I want to spend my money and why I feel I am being robbed.

Being robbed is against your own will. Buying a DLC (reguardless of the price) is COMPLETELY OPTIONAL.

This.

+1

@OP It's a buisness dude what do you expect, either support it or don't.

I mean, he COULD argue that he's addicted. Some addled-minded individual would listen.

That would be insane. He might aswell argue he is addicted to setting himself on fire and its the cavemans fault for rubbing two sticks toghether and discovering it.

Stopped reading at page 2, but just thought I'd make it clear technically anything you can download that is content is going to be "DLC" so yes technically Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Shivering Isle was DLC, but it was not merely a small quest/ item, it was also technically an expansion pack. Whereas all of the stuff thus far released for Dragon Age Origins has been small DLC, like quests, a few story expansions, but Awakening is an expansion...

I don't know if that guy still looks at this thread but I don't think they released a retail version of any of the previous DLC, and that should be a big red flag that says "Hey maybe this one is bigger and more important because its about $35 more, and is in stores"... Seriously....

I am actually 38 and drug free. I think two other DLCs that are a good example of a lower cost for a lot of content would be Ballad of Gay Tony and also Lost and the Damned. Both practically their own game and not $40! You can get both for $40, $20 each on their own playable disc, and don't even need the original game.  And yes, this is my true opinion.  Don't get me wrong, I like Dragon Age: Origins but still find it hard to swallow that it will be $40.  If I was playing WoW $40 would be ok because some of that content is end game, it is something to work toward, and you might still never see it unless you raid 4-5 days a night.  Plus you always continue to farm for those rare drops.  Same goes for Borderlands.  The game doesn't get stale because your always farming for those better guns.

Corrections:
I am actually 12 and a junkie. I think two other DLCs that are cool are Ballad of Gay Tony and Lost and Damned. Theyre like a whole game long and dont use all my drug money. I dont actually like DAO and thats why im moaning. WoW is kewl. Borderlands guns are kewl.

This is what the troll really means people.

I took my father out to dinner this weekend at a fancy restaurant for his birthday. The check for the 3 of us (mother included), including a bottle of wine and tip, came to $220 US dollars. Did I get real value for my money? Hell no. The food was very good but it definitely wasn't 200 dollars good. You'd be hard pressed to argue to me that any one meal is worth that price. So why did I do it then? Because it's all subjective. The feeling of going to a restaurant and being treated to an extravagant meal in and of itself has worth.

Well diddy for you for being able to afford such an endeavor. Not all of us are so fortunate.

Nice to know you missed the whole point.

By the way calling me "fortunate", as if I didn't study hard, work hard, and EARN my lot in life is exactly what I am talking about.

You're not a victim. But you like to act like one.

I stopped reading on page 3, but some things O would like to point out

shiviering isles also contain a wonderful bug that would slowly corrupt your save along with many many other bugs that basically were never fixed, loaded doors, missions being bugged to no end etc, then again with the exception of emory corruption thes problems plagued the main campain, wors still the lovely dlc (yeah they were nice) introduced MORE bugs.

as for op show some respect,if you are 38 I would think you would be able to handle yourself in a better way, you want people to be civil to you then stop flaming them and putting curse word in every damn sentence, it is really annoying

ugh this forum

Ok, this is just getting cute.

Here actual business analysis of why it failed.  Pirates aren't mentioned there.

But the main reason for the failure of the Dreamcast was a result of Sega's approach to game developers. A restrictive and unhelpful attitude cost it the chance to get leading publishers behind the console and it led to a lack of quality games compared with other platforms."Sega has never been the developers' friend and it selected partners, rather than be open to all. Product has been a problem and there was less software available than there was for the PlayStation," says Kevin Bulmer, director of new technologies at games publisher Synthetic Dimensions.

I guess if you want to keep blaming pirates go ahead--but that's not what the business analysts say, it's not what sega says, it doesn't make sense considering when the Dreamcast died (shortly after the release of the PS2), and it doesn't make sense in the context of reality.

P.S. Just to be a dick: Nov. 1999 to Feb 2002 = two and a half years.  Not one and a half.  And the N64 barely sold triple the consoles with a full run.  Thus my 'I guess the N64 musta been pirated pretty hard, too?' comment.  Pro-tip, it wasn't.
