Varren?

Singularity is not the power you should use against varren. What you use is Warp+Throw. Warp/Shoot away the armor, then Throw them somewhere more convenient - like very far away from you.

Even if you don't place them well, Throw knocks 'em down, giving you about 3 or 4 seconds to run away. Never had a problem with Varren as an Adept, even in the early game.

Well its primarily early game where I had this problem. I probably put too many points into singularity to start with. Throw wouldn't kill them, so inevitably I'd throw one away from me and forget about them until they were back gnawing on my ankles. Still it wasn't too bad, I made it past them eventually and adept is still my favorite class.

Now that I think about it, adept was the first class i tried insanity with, so some of that adjusting may also be coloring my memory.

It stems from the fact that both shields/barriers and armor prevent effective use of the majority of the Adept and Engineer's arsenal of powers.
On higher difficulties almost every enemy will have either armor or a shield/barrier this means Adepts and Engineers are effectively limited to the specific "counter-x" abilities they have, for Adepts this means spamming Warp all day for Engineer's it's Overload for a while then Incinerate. Only once you've worked on an enemy spamming the counter abilities for a while will you get to use the fun abilities most people play Adept and Engineer for, i.e. pull, throw, cryo blast, ai hacking, etc.

In short the new armor/shields/barrier immunity to powers royally screwed over the power heavy classes

And that's why I brought along Garrus and Mordin... Area Overload (Garrus) + Area Incinerate (Mordin) -> Singularity almost instantly.

The adept is a versatile class that can be played in many different ways just by picking a different bonus power. You can take Heavy Barrier and the Eviscerator Shotgun and play close to a Vanguard but without any long range problems. Or you can take Area Energy Drain and play close to a Sentinel but without any crowd control problems.

I think that's a worthwhile point. I've been experimenting playing an Adept with Barrier and i'm rather impressed as to how agressively I can play without constantly bashing unity. Rather cool :D

OK Singularity is the only power in the game that works against everything except YMIRs and the two Praetorians.

As for the Engineer Drone although it a great power that can be useful in most situations it is not a power that directly affects your enemies so I am not sure if it really counts.

The Engineer Drone actually effects the same targets that Singularity and they both control very efficiently. The only difference is that Singularlity doesn't do much base damage itself, but combines with warp to set up a warp detonation. Whereas the Drone has some potential dps and can even explode upon death if you choose it. So saying that one is better than the other is simply obsurd. They are par at best and are the most successful unique powers in the game when it comes to controlling targets.

I would sooner use an engineer than an adept but you are right. But i always liked the guns just like i did in ME1. Engineers would be highly useful on insanity with their abilitys to strip defenses away. Adepts on insanity has warp. Thats all i can think thats useful. the other abilities are really cool and fancy though. I say engineers are cool, i wish they had the tech armor instead of sentinal.

Krogan charges.Singularity.
Harbinger charges.Singularity + warp explosion.
Scion.Singularity make them harmless and a toy to play with.
Try out shotgunning adepts people.Use singularity on them and shoot them in the face.
The hardest enemies in the game are jokes for the adept.
Its the same for the engineer and the drone, but the engineer has the advantage that the drone also take care of ymir. Not that they are very hard enemies.
