Really? Tali and Garrus were that popular for their roles in ME1?
I am sort of amazed to hear that. Garrus especially was not very interesting compared to his ME2 self.
But hey since when have me and the mob ever agreed on anything?

Why do you think they where added and where made LI? Because they both had huge fanbases who wanted them as LI.

Casey Hudson roundtable interview
"I think the ones that were more universally liked were characters like Wrex, Garrus was kind of a surprise."

Patrick Weekes thread
Wrex: Wrex was pretty clearly a fan favorite, and I think that a lot of people predicted it -- he's a fun character, a thug with a philosophical streak hidden under that deep pragmatism, who's smarter than most people actually suspect and desperate for something to believe in after centuries of disappointment. You combine that character with the awesome look and voice, and yeah, he's pretty cool.

He dodged the question about them being squad mates though.

If the old ME forums where not closed, I would tell you to go there. Tali and Garrus threads would pop up so much it was not even funny.

Q: Certain party members from the first game can be recruited in Mass Effect 2. Does that mean we'll see characters from this game make a return in ME3?
A: You will definitely be able to see Characters from Mass Effect 2 in Mass Effect 3, as long as they're alive in the end of your story. It's a challenge for sure, but it's also going to be a huge payoff for players of the Mass Effect trilogy to see what happens with all these characters and storylines started by the first two games.

That doesn't mean that those characters were the most popular, it just means that thier fanbases were the most vocal.

It would be a waste if we spent an entire game recruiting the best fighters in the galaxy - only to have them replaced by random newcomers in the final act. Perhaps more insulting would be the fact that the whole suicide mission ultimately ends up as a cheap gimmick if this proves true.

Also, how does not having people who died in a suicide mission return in ME3 make it a cheap gimmick? It would be more of a cheap gimmick if they do return. They just died in a suicide mission after all, how could they come back?

Certianly not by looking at forum threads. That's probably one of the least accurate measurements I can think of. Honestly, they probably did some sort of poll/census thing. Though it's exact accuracy is debat

Agreed. Recruitment is the game in ME2. The Reaper-related content would barely qualify for an expansion. If at least some squaddies aren't recruitable, then what was the point of the game?
You recruited a group to go on a suicide misison, mission complete. Why do I need them hanging around any longer?

I know they have a very vocal fanfase (here) but it doesn't make them the most popular characters.
here is another poll (a german Mass Effect site)...Miranda wins, not Tali
http://www.masseffec...,results/id,10/
Tali thread 2000 pages = squadmate status in ME3
Jack thread 100 pages = no squadmate status in ME3
...I doubt it

Well obviously they wouldn't be recruitable if they died, but it'd make sense for them to be there if they survived. And you weren't recruiting the best in the galaxy in the first mission. They were just folks you came across.
Two of whom just happened to be The Best In The Galaxy, see sig below.

Thinking that BW uses fanbases as a measure of anything is rather ridculous. IF BW cared what the fanbases thought of the characters they wouldn't have removed the ME1 LI's in ME2.
BW doesn't care what we do or don't want as far as characters are concerned. If they think that Liara should be the new Shadow Broker in ME3 and that Tali should be a cigar smoking merc band leader and neither of them should be squadmates in ME3 you can damn well bet that is what is going to happen.

Uhhhhhhh clearly they do. You can debate about how sensible it is but it's definitely why there is the same robot coming across two separate Jedi Masters in two separate stories and why Garrus and Tali make it to the second squad.

No, this is not just speculation or (ah, yes) "logic" Gameinformer, a gaming magazine, for those of you who don't know. Had an interview with Casey Hudson in their latest issue. And he had this little nugget of knowledge to share--
Q: Certain party members from the first game can be recruited in Mass Effect 2. Does that mean we'll see characters from this game make a return in ME3?

And remember, this isn't just some PR rep., this is the project director. He knows what he's talking about.
Also remember that it would cost more money to make all of the squadmates into cameos, since video game VA commisions are done by project, not by the amount of hours. Everybody will most likely be a squadmate.

Except they weren't the best fighters in the galaxy by a long shot. They were two somewhat above-average alliance soldiers, a cowboy cop, a young quarian on her pilgrimage, and an archeologist. Wrex was probably the only exception.

It would be a cheap gimmick because if all of the ME2 characters only come back as cameos in ME3, then it makes the impact of the suicide mission practically insignificant. Who cares about keeping everyone alive if it doesn't really affect ME3 in any significant way?

Obviously they would only come back if they lived in your import save. Wow. Should have been obvious.

Because the Reaper plot is essentially put on hold in favor of recruiting this team. There are five main story missions There are seven recruitment and ten loyalty missions. If the entire squad is scrapped then three quarters of the game was a complete waste of time. Also, why bother keeping them alive if they're irrelevent to ME3.

Last time I checked, Thane's Love Group was huge and a lot of people prefer Jack over Miranda
But we're there...
Not gunna turn this into a Cure Thane post, promise, but I definitely support the notion of having all the LIs return as squaddies. People who stayed faithful with their ME LIs deserve it, and people who grew attached to the ME2 LIs don't deserve to get cut down in the final installment of the triology.

Neither could Liara, and you could have never recruited Garrus in the first place.
