Hello Dragon Age fans,

It's time for another dev question. This week, we want to invite a more freeform discussion, and so we will have no poll attached to this one.

SPOILERS WARNING: This will inevitably be a spoiler-heavy topic. If you have not yet finished Dragon Age: Origins and don't want the story spoiled for you, stop reading right now! It's posted here, since I suspect that people have become accustomed to the Dev Questions being in General Discussion, so this is an exception to the usual rule.

Future stories can stretch across the world and across time within the era known as the Dragon Age, but we'd like them to carry familiar themes and ideas. So we invite you to talk about the stand-out moments of the Dragon Age story. What discoveries about the world of Thedas etched themselves into your memory. What events or comments in the game would you like to see followed through or expanded on?

No example is too big or too small. For example, a standout moment for me is when in Redcliffe with Leliana, she tells you that she once rode the sails of a windmill. According to her, it did not end well. It's small, but I'd love to know why she found herself in that situation. On the larger scale, I would also love to learn more about the Orlesian occupation of Ferelden.

So, let's hear yours!

Hmm, I want to know why Oghren fought a roasted nug. At a funeral no less.

On a larger scale, MOAR about the qunari. At least a quanri female *puppy eyes*.

Hello!

Things that I would like expanded upon:

Morrigan and her child [obviously.]

The fall of the Dwarf kingdoms and rise of the Darkspawn. The whole Backstory including the codex snippet: KAL SHAROK LIVES! fascinates me.

A Qunari Invasion in the future. Darkspawn are well and good but the worst kind of enemy is the kind you can actually agree with and turn you into their side [with the Qun, of course!]

The things Loghain says to DOG are extremely sad and shed more light on his character than, well, anything else. Flesh out one of the Warden's greatest enemies, I say!

I would like to experience:

* The War against Orlais from the point of view of one Bryce Cousland or some other minor noble. It was obviously a terrible battle and we know everyone had things to do while Maric was wandering the deep roads getting it on with strange elf women.

Outside the scope of Dragon Age, or perhaps not? The original Grey Wardens, the hard men [and women perhaps] who saved a dying world by discovering the truth behind the Archdemon and ALL DIED to defeat it, leaving hope in their wake.

Please focus on strong themes for DA games. Sacrifice, Redemption, Hope, and the opportunity for the Pc to be the ultimate Hero or the Ultimate badass.

Thanks for reading!

Oh, where to begin?

I was really interested in all the talk about how Chevaliers are pretty much allowed to do what they want. They see something they like, they take it. They see a woman they like, they take her.

Made me really want to meet those guys and knock them around a bit. Ok, a lot.

Broodmothers. Just how exactly the transformation proceeded before they became one. I would love to find some journal of a slowly transforming Broodmother, writing her last thoughts.

And the last thing (for now). Leliana's backstory is not all that well explored. Just how exactly did she become a bard? What exactly was her relationship with Marjolaine? How did she escape from the prison?

Just little things that made me wonder for some time. Same could be said for other companions.

for me alot of the "standout" things are stories yet untouched but I read during the game in codex entries or david gaiders books

examples

- the Awars (or anwars) the mysterious people who live in the hills around haven

- the other mages tower that is a prison for the maleficorans

- the other towns that were a part of "the stolen throne" book

alot of things in the game were gratifying but yet I had done them 3-4 different ways so the intrigue is gone a little, but the small little stories are what really interest me (good job on writing in-depth codex entries)..

these small litttle stories would make great DLC's (hint hint)

But in-game the most memorable thing was the decisions and the resulting consequences (and romances too i guess), the ability to have "choice" within a game has made this the most memorable RPG for me since morrowind, and I hope Bioware continues this trend in the future

I'm very curious about the Golden City, and the true origins of the Darkspawn.

Kal'Sharok sounds pretty intriguing to me as well.

A visit to the Qunari occupied lands might be fun.

The obligatory Morrigan comment. Everyone wants to know about the godchild.

Barbarian tribes and cultures of Ferelden. We saw a few Chasind, and a few mentions of them, but they were otherwise ignored. I don't know that the Avvar were even mentioned. Both are intriguing.

Griffons!

Highever, specifically helping Fergus retake and rebuild. Maybe seeing him remarry and have another child so the Cousland line doesn't disappear.

I'd love to find Calenhad's legendary armor in some high level compaign/DLC.

It would also be rather interesting to see some opportunist nation attack Ferelden now that the Blight is over. Based on the lore of the previous Blights, it seems like there is always someone waiting in the wings to attack whichever country was weakened most by the fighting.

I want to know more about Alistair's childhood and people he knew... or more about the sibling rivalry between the Aeducan brothers. The Dwarven noble origin was one of the best. I was only sad that my dwarf couldn't claim the crown.

Orzammar : it's detail, politics, people, i played alot of games in 22 years, and i have never been stuned by most citys made in games as most are lifeless, Orzammar has to be one of a few favorite places to explore in a game, and knowing the fact that your actions change the life and politics of its people.

Orlais : i would love to see this city, leliana who is one of my favorite chars, speaks of this city and would love to see bioware vision of what orlais is.

Empress Celene I : again kind of related to orlais, this is someone i like to read, hear and see more about, as in most cases the royal line in ferelden will have changed, and knowing what was talked about between King Cailan and the Empress, would be nice to see this angle and reaction explored.

*moar Dwarf lore please, it utterly fascinates me. I never used to like dwarves in this game, and hated the trope of them. This game has completely changed that, because the setting is so brilliant. I would love to know how the politics/socialism changes under either Harrowmont/Bhalen, and see that played out.

*Morrigan's story is unfinished, however you played it.

*Also, Dagna! She was my favourite NPC (soooo cute how could you not help her?) And I'd love to see her story played through, and the repercussions of her research.

*I'd love to see more of the Kocari wilds and the "barbarians" that live there.

I absolutely loved the interactions between Sten and my dog. After retrieving his sword, he speaks about it with another warrior like him. Not Oghren, not my own warrior, not Alistair, but my dog. Awesome.

I think it would be great during the epilogue if you could ask your dog if he wanted to go with Sten when he returned to his homeland. They're right next to each other during the epilogue sequence.

I just finished my first playthrough recently as a Mage. Between talking with Wynne about how I should return to the Circle Tower when the Blight was over, Irving asking Wynne to become First Enchanter and Wynne not wanting it, I thought I would have been given the option to become the new First Enchanter. Maybe I could have been but didn't say the right things to be given the choice.

EDIT: Oh, and right before the final battle when all your allies speak with you, including your dog, maybe you could ask Sten to take care of your dog if something happens to you?  Or even better, ask your dog to take care of Sten.

Just a quick question. Since this is the one & only subforum with the NO SPOILER warning, and yet this thread invites spoilers, shouldn't it be in one of the *all the other* subforums that *do* allow spoilers? Just wondering. Not that I mind. There's nothing that could be spoiled for me, but I could inadvertently spoil something for someone else.

I admit wanting to know more about the Qunari & their culture. Sten's stoicism didn't give me a lot of anthropological insight. On the other hand, I expect they are ALL like Sten and not exactly highly talkative. In which case I might not get a lot from talking to others. Ergo, maybe there needs to be a BOOK on the Qunari.

I can't point to one "standout moment" per se, but all of my interactions with Sten left me wondering more, and definitely hoping to meet more Qunari, or visit his homeland.

Just off the top of my head.

Dagna, she is extremely memorable and blasted cute to boot.

Morrigan's romance was a standout moment for me, one of the best romances I've seen done in video game, ever. (Major kudos to Claudia black, she truly brought that character to life.)

The entire Deep Roads section, one of my favorite areas of the entire game. Mostly due to the dark nature and wonderful storytelling. The Broodmother was a surprise, but learning more about it and Branka was the true stand-out moment in that area, I was horrified by what Branka did to her own people. :o

The City Elf's origin was standout as well, extremely well done.

The last one I can think of off the bat, was the Orphanage quest in the Alienage, helping the blind Templar hunt the demons. That was so well done, and gave insight into the better aspects of the Templars, *Spoiler*

I freaked out when the Templar was killed at the end. Blarg :( *End Spoiler*

You fish where they'll bite :)

This post sat in the Official Campaign forum for an hour with no replies. As soon as I moved it over here, replies started coming. I even edited the opening paragraph to say this was an exception to the usual rule. Since previous Dev Questions have been in General Discussion, I figured it was more likely to be seen and get a good number of responses over here.

Little Details I'd like to know more about:

I'd like to know more about my companions, even about the little things like the anecdote Victor wrote about. These little details are what made the world so vivid and alive -- like when Zevran says " When was the last time I slipped my hand into some dark hole? Hmmm... Long story, that.", well, I'd like to hear that story too!  :D

Another example is Wynne's son: the stunning revelation, casually thrown out during an Alistair's banter, was so sudden I almost choke on my coffee. I'd have liked to be able to talk to her about what happened to her, maybe offer her some word of consolation, if that could help.

Anyway, I made my point. These little details are priceless, and whenever I discover a new one I'm really happy, both because, even after many playthroughs, there is still something new to discover and because these characters are so deep and believable, thanks to these little touches, that I developed a genuine attachment to them, like it happens with the best books, movies or TV shows.

Lore Topics I'd like to explore further:

1. Arlathan and the Elves: the origin, development and downfall of the ancient reign is one of the most fascinating topic in the game, and I'd like to know more about Elven lore and mythology, customs and traditions. And of course I'd like to know exactly what happened between the Elves and the Tevinter Imperium (i.e. why are the ruins in the Brecilian Forest built in human architecture but with elven statuary? Did they live together for a while? Do they share some common progenitors?)

2. Tevinter and the Magisters: this should go without saying, but I'd obviously like to explore the history of Tevinter and its Magister Lords, understand how they prepared to enter the Fade physically, what exactly happened in the Golden/Black City, and, as such...

3. Of Darkspawn, Blights and Gods: everything that further explores these themes - Old Gods, Ancient Gods of the Elves, the Maker, the deities of the nomadic tribes, the relationshipt between these pantheons, the nature of the Blights and so on - is welcome and appreciated, of course! ;)

4. Magic: the fraternities of Enchanters were a wonderful addition, and a topic I'd surely like to explore further. Being able to pick a fraternity, engage more directly into the Circle's politics would be a great addition for me. And since everything about the magic lore is already top-notch, I'd like to know more about it as well.

Game Situations I'd like to experience:

1. For me, the Landsmeet was one of the most intense moments of the game. In the future, I'd love to be able to partecipate in an even larger political scheme, maybe even between different nations. I love politics and I found that, when done well, these kind of dynamics add a lot more to the setting. When the banns voted for their support, that was a very emotional moment for me, a truly epic one. And I certainly like to get more!

2. More tough choices like the ones seen in Redcliffe (I'm talking about Connor and Isolde) or in Orzammar, where there wasn't a clear-cut good solution.

3. More investigative quests. A good example is the quest in Knights of the Old Republic, where the PC has to help a Jedi finding the culprit of a crime. I like investigation! :)

Standout Moments

Or the moments where I was really excited, where the epic feeling of the game resonated so strongly that I had to seat at the edge of my seat:

1. The Landsmeet
2. Alistair's speech before entering Denerim to battle the Archdemon
3. The confrontation with Uldred at the end of Broken Circle

And, obviously, the romances, which were an integral part of my appreciation of the game, especially when they evolved dynamically in ways I hadn't foreseen (like Zevran's refusal to go to the tent with the Warden after he's in love with him/her).

Moments that I loved! When Leliana sang her song just when things were looking very dark ... when Sten attacked me physically ... the sudden deaths of my fellow Gray Warden recruits ... The moments that surprised me and shook me up were my favorites... Leiliana's song in particular, that was a moment of grace that one rarely experiences.... so I would just say, make more moments like that!

Ok, topics i would like to know more are:
  • Morrigan story: I want to know what happened to her after you defeated the Archdemon, and she dissapears. I want to see the God-son of my warden.
  • I would like to know more about the Deep Roads, and the Legion of the Dead.
  • I would like to see Antiva, i think that it is the best country in Thedas.
  • Also the Golden City, I want to visit it, to see if the maker really dissapeared.
There are more things, but i think this are the most important.

Orzammer and the deep roads were the most memorable places in DA for me. Anvil of the Void, Broodmother, etc. etc., nowhere else DA was so interesting and so much fun to play than in Orzammer and the deep roads. The cutscene in the deep roads with the archdeamon was great, it felt like there was a real threat going on.

Another special moment was the cutscene when you were resting at the party camp for the first time, when Alistair was sitting at the campfire talking about the dreams. Made me feel like there's a relation between my character and Alistair resp. between the grey wardens.

I also remember a conversation between Alistair and Wynne when Alistair was whining he had a hole in his socks and asked "grandma" Wynne to stitch them for him. Image IPB

The fight against Ser Cauthrien. Beating her without running away did take me some hours, but it was a lot of fun. The best fight in DA for me.

The evening/night in Redcliffe Castle before the final battle, the story with Morrigan and her child.

The ending. Best ending of a computer game ever. I especially liked the epilogue, it was great to speak a few words with everyone.

With regard to DA2 I'm above all curious to know what you will make out of all the different endings (I expect to start DA2 as the chancellor of Ferelden Image IPB) and what happens with Morrigan, her child and the other companions.

I'm just finishing another DAO playthrough after playing ME3 for weeks (in prep for Awakenings), and have a new appreciation for how much I love this game, so this thread is timely for me.

This time through I was caught thinking how cool it would be to have an adventure that explored the fate of the Dwarves that were abandoned on the other end of the deep roads. When it came up I thought, "Damn, that must really be something: to have abandoned all your settlements and your capital city to the dawkspawn, and to have one city survive the betrayal." I wonder what those dwarves would be like. It seems to me like a great opportunity to add a unique twist to the ordinary dwarf profile.

I really liked Riordan this time around. The fact that he's from Ferelden but is a Grey Warden from Orlais. It interests me that he is from Highever, just like my human noble. I thought that would be a great alternate scene -- to have him acknowledge my character in some way. Also, I was interested when he mentioned that the wardens at the warden headquarters were strange, and that there were dozens in certain places but thousands in the Anderfels.

I would love to start a Griffon breeding program. lol

The part of the landsmeet where the nobles state whether they are for or against the warden was a great scene. I would love to see all of those places: Dragon's Peak, Waking Seas -- what great names. I really liked the times in the game when the Ferelden nobility came into play, and thought it would be great for the game to have a component that built this piece out a lot more. With the human noble origin I was always left wondering why there wasn't more acknowledgement of the last Cousland and the help that should be offered to him/her from the banns. I think I read that Highever is one of two Teryns, so it always seemed odd to me that there was never any real acknowledgement that the Cousland warden is technically the same rank as Loghain. Anyway, more nobility and politics would be great.

Every country/location that was mentioned in the game sounded interesting enough to visit, except, perhaps, the Free Marches, of which I don't remember anything in particular. If I were to go back in time, I'd love to go through the founding of the wardens, and back to the height of the Imperium. As far as settings, Orlais would be great provided my human female got to put a boot up the ass of the first Chevalier who tried to take liberties. I bet they have tournaments, and different orders of knights and all that. Fun stuff. Antiva strikes me as a Bangkok sort of place. I would expect a rich guild culture, and fun to be had moving up the ranks.

As far as memorable moments in-game -- there are really too many to detail. I played the human noble origin the most, and I did love Highever. I think it would be great if it were found out that Howe imprisoned Bryce instead of killed him. I think the fact that Duncan was from Highever too is an interesting bit.

Want Duncan to be alive. The force is strong in him. He needs to be romanceable though. LOL

Alistair is the best character ever, and if this is the only game where he's playable it would be a damn shame, really of epic proportions to me.

I didn't feel that there was anything particularly memorable about the elves, unless you wanted to go back to their glory days, or somehow reclaim their heritage. I'm not fond of the character design, so it sort of skews my view.

The Qunari...the society seems too regimented to be fun with their 'women can only be this", so I doubt I'd want to spend too much time there. The original invasion of the Qunari into Thedas might be interesting to play. And Sten's whole exchange with Morrigan about the a la Vulcan-type sex and "You're too puny to have sex with a Qunari, human" thing was interesting. LOL

I'd like to explore the order of the Templars, and the concept of the exalted march.

And from a general perspective, I would love a game set in each Age, they all sound so fascinating.

Finally, Mabari lore exploration would be cool. I think my hound is irreplaceable.

Really, you can't go wrong. Great world. As long as you keep in mind that the thing that makes it memorable is not so much the canvass but the characters moving along the canvass; that players are invested in their avatars, and want to be fans of characters and relationships/affiliations; and that in today's age of heightened interactivity, it's dicey to try to separate the fan from hir investiture and objects of obsession just to completely change settings, you should be fine.

A few of the moments that struck me....

-Leliana and her past. Specifically her exploits as a "bard" in Orlais and all the political intrigues of that country and the nobility in Val Royeaux. The few npcs from Orlais we meet all seem to have a haughty nature to them. It needs exploring

- Kal-Sharok and the reunification of the Drawrven people. After all this time, how did the meeting go and how do they see each other now.

-The Tiventer blood mages we meet are very arrogant. For such a fallen empire, why is that?

-The Dalish. Do they want a permanent home somewhere?

some memorable moments in the game that really struck me as superb were...

Haven and the cult
The Landsmeet

The devil is in the details. Besides the very obvious for me:

Antiva: I find the situation there fascinating and of course, being Zevran obsessed, that just multiplies it so, yeah. Antiva has everything: Adventure, Intrigue and Sex.

Besides that, there are some tiny subplots that evolve that probably wouldn't ever warrent an expansion but still, resolution would be nice.

1. What is up with Habren and her buying all those dogs. As Alistair might say: Creepy.
2. The whole Arl of Denerim overthrow. You get a couple of gossips about this - that the Crows were hired to kill Arl Urien, for example, but then it backfired when the elves revolted and Vaughn was (supposedly) killed, leaving a power vacuum. DID the Crows kill him? Zevran says he was "in the area" when the order came for the Grey Wardens but later says that he's never left Antiva before he bid on the Warden's contract. And, if we follow the timeline, doesn't that mean the Alienage has been closed off for almost a year once you start wrapping up the DA:O storyline?
3. The Blackstone Irregulars - how does this power struggle end up playing out? You either side with one or the other or pick neither and walk away, but all 3 would have consequences.
4. The lives of the apostates and templars. You know, for having a whole group dedicated to hunting down mages, there are a surprising number of apostates running around, usually trying to kill me in some capacity. Does the Mage's Collective do more covert things to keep these mages out of the hands of the templars? And why aren't we seeing more templars out hunting mages, it's implied they do, except we only ever see them guarding chantries and the mages of the Tower.
5. The Zevran/Rinna/Taliesin triangle. Did Taliesin set Rinna up out of jealousy? Was it just one Master who had it out for Zevran or several? How does the whole Crow cell set-up even work? 1 Master assassin with several serving under him, and do they all meet in some sort of council or... I guess see my main point.
6. More about the Arcane Warriors. That little flash you "see" from the crystal isn't enough.
