When I first played the game, I tried a Vangaurd and got smoked a lot. It was really frustrating and I gave up. I took up the infiltrator and the soldier and did a lot better. The infiltrator was really fun by the way. However I read the guide posted here, watched a couple videos and revisted my vanguard character. I have to say it's the most fun I had in the game. The constant thinking of tactics, the danger, the excitement of getting up close and shooting and beating someone to death was awesome. There were times I died a lot, but once you figure out the correct tactics to use in a situation, you more often than not smoke everything. This class can be frustrating to learn, but in my honest opinion it's probably the most exciting.

Aye, the Vanguard is definitely an adrenaline pumping class. I'm looking forward to my Vanguard run as soon as I finish my third engineer run and my sentinel run. Given my natural aggressive playstyle, I think I will get along nicely with the Vanguard class. The only problem I may have is knowing my surroundings. I excel at it with my Engineer but it's clear that the playstyle between the two classes is extremely different,

If you like the engineer, I suggest taking Tali/Legion with you for Vanguarding. The drone can be very helpful despite the long cooldown.

Yeah, I'm loving vanguard in ME2. Took a little adjustment time compared to other classes, but there's nothing like tearing across the battlefield and putting the hurt on someone.

Vanguard is pretty awesome. Recommend you spec Sniper Rifle when available since Claymore is comparable to Eviscerator. The Viper is extremely useful for taking something down quick from medium to long range. I basically consider it 'free' ammo and it can unload a full clip of 12 extremely fast. With the shotgun you charge protected enemies then blast them... but with the Viper you can strip protection then charge naked enemies and send them flying for fun (and variation).

If Ammo was no concern then the Viper is probably the best weapon in the game, and for a Vanguard you can just waste all the ammo destroying things and then go back to shotgun till you get more ammo.

The shield recharge on Charge makes Vanguard very survivable. Really, it's quite surprising. I have only had two frustrating fights: your first encounter with flamethrower-toting vorcha, and the last fight in Zaeed's loyalty mission. The first was my first real fight with a Vanguard, and the second not only had my hated enemies the Pyros but a surprisingly high amount of "can't get a lock!" when the target was ten meters away with no intervening obstacles. >.>

If you ever hear cant get a lock keep spamming charge but start running for cover, and if your shields drop then spam unity (medikit). It will heal you to full and recharge your shields. Otherwise, if you dont mind reloading you can just push the reload button.

Yeah. Can't get a lock = fatal. Really annoying when the target is right there, at point blank range.

The last fight on Zaeeds loyalty mission is easy with vanguard. The door is open. So you can just charge the mech and run out, i can literally do that place in 10 seconds as a vanguard, 30 or so if i want the money that can be found there.

I am probably at my best when playing as the infiltrator or soldier but I love the vanguard too. It's a crazy class that really plays the game in a completely different way. The vanguard and the engineer offer the most unique play styles in the game. Take the viper if you really want a character that can handle any situation but to be honest, I'm a claymore guy myself now. If you want ot be able to handle any situation, take the soldier but if you want to be a vanguard, take the claymore. It's ****ing awesome.
