^ yep, often you can just widow/ vindicator, especially when you use AR well. but i don't like having to rely on always using AR and always hitting targets, cause

1) I am ritard

2) I'm on 360, so sniping is a bit less precise.

also, there are some tight levels where the enemy will invariably get too close for you to use the widow the way you want to. if you only have the vindi as a fallback, that can run out of ammo quick.

anyway, who doesn't like getting up in your enemies face with a shotgun for a change?

For Shock Troopers on Insanity (those who gear most everything towards improved health), I would still use Heightened Adrenaline Rush. I've used both Heightened and Hardened with that build, and the extra versatility that comes with Heightened's improved accuracy increases survivability more imo. In levels with tons of shooters, there are just too many times when getting up close = instant death.

It's not just survivability that improves with Heightened, but also the speed of your kills. Even with the Vindicator, having every shot land on your target without having to compensate for recoil allows for super quick kills. Granted they are not the strongest, I've killed Vorcha and Collector Drones with 3 bursts, all possible within Heightened Rush (it's more like 2 1/3).

Also, it's one of the best escape mechanisms available, because even thought the entire world is affected by time dilation, your movement speed isn't.

even so, the geth pulse rifle is awesome imo(it just looks so cool), so i almost always take the widow. i found that the reverant, while stilll being really powerful, can't hold a candle to the widow. seriously, it is one of the most OP guns ive seen in a while. That said, i like heightened more, since i simply like to headshot every single enemy before they even get close (i am serious, i played insanity and only died twice on horizon, once on the reaper IFF, a few times when i i f'd up hammerhead jumps (doesnt really count), and i think once or twice on the suicide mission. I dont think i had any other legit deaths where i wasnt goofing off, trying to evi shotgun everyone (still really fun though).

Back to my original point, if you can snipe fairly well, and have heightened, than you will love the widow. You will also never die. in tight situations, it is super helpful to quick-scope an enemy and run away under heightened. scratch one enemy, and you are now in cover!

Unfortunately when I take the Widow as a Soldier I almost always become solely a sniper. And since there is a class devoted to sniping, and one to shotgunning as well, I think it makes more sense for the Soldier to get the revenant, as it is the only class which has the opportunity to do so,

With the revenant I still use all my weapons evenly, as I believe the soldier should

good point actually about the using all weapons, but i never use the shotguns anyway, simple because unless i am playing a vanguard, i dont really like to get up close to enemys anyway. sguns also have such a long switch time that i can kill them faster with any other weapon. As for using assault rifles, i think that the reverent isnt really powerful enough to warrent taking it over another weapon. It is still the most powerful AR, but the other specalized guns i think are better for their class.

HOWEVER

Depending on the typr of soldier i am playing, then i will take the reverant, and use it constantly. For sniping purposes, i use the viper due to it's amazing ammo supply. I can thin the heard via taking out their shields and (hopefully) armour via the viper, and then finish them when they get close with the reverant. OR i just go in adreniline rushing and turn them all into reverants

Hey all!

I'm going through Insanity with a fully leveled up Soldier and I'm having a change of heart in terms of where to distribute my points. I'm more than halfway through the game, all this time I had Squad Warp Ammo as my bonus power, but I think I'm going to cancel bonus powers altogther and just do what my Soldier does best with his stock ammo types.

Here's my first build:
Hardened Adrenaline
Concussive Shot (Lvl. 1)
Squad Disruptor Ammo
Inferno Ammo
No Cry Ammo
Shock Trooper
Squad Warp Ammo

So far the game has been difficult, but doable. However, I want to change things up a notch now that I'm past the Collector trap ship. I'm doing a bunch of loyalty quests now and I think the game would be a lot more fun if I redistributed my points the following way:

Hardened AR
Concussive Shot (Lvl. 1)
Heavy Disruptor Ammo
Inferno Ammo
Improved Cryo Ammo
Shock Trooper
No Bonus Power

Notice none of them are Squad ammo. Even with Squad ammo, my squad spends half the game dead, so why bother??!! I can clear out a room on Insanity by myself, heavy ammo types just makes it easier.

P.S.
Awesome vids, Average Gatsby. :)

@DanielJr:  You're right of course, that is certainly a strong way to go.  The great thing about the Soldier is their flexibility, there are quite a few strong ways to build them.  However in your newly proposed build, you as Shepard will never have the need to use Improved Cryo when you already have Inferno for organics and Heavy Disruptor for synthetics.  Might as well change Improved Cryo to Squad Cryo.  It's perfect for the only one squad evolved ammo builds, the set it and forget it squad ammo for every situation.  This way your build still has the same focus, not relying on your squad for optimal weapon damage and instead maximizing your own, while also gaining a bit of free crowd control whenever your squadmates are, as you noted, conscious.  Besides the only difference between Improved and Squad Cryo is 2 seconds of duration.  Shepard can still use the Squad Cryo just as well if you wanted to (definitely keep it on your shotgun for synthetic missions, you don't want Heavy Disruptor exploding mechs in your face when within shotgun range).  It only takes a melee or two to shatter a frozen enemy.  Five seconds is plenty long enough.

I love the widow/vindicator/eviscerator combo. Heightened Ad Rush is beast with the SR and SG, and the vindicators well accuracy and DPS is just so good for popping shots in and out, then unleashing either a CQC or snipe.

Reading through the guide I was very interested by swk3000's point about Heightened vs Hardened as I had not really thought too much about it before and just always picked Heightened because of the bigger damage bonus. As I am starting a new Revenant Soldier I decided to do a little theory crafting to see how big the difference is and just thought I would share the numbers so I don't feel as bad for waisting 10min of my life on something like this.

Revenant Assault Rifle

Rounds per minute = 700
Rounds per second = 11.6
Damage per Round = 21.3

*bracket numbers with Shock Trooper duration bonus
Time Dilation: Hardened (50%) = 2.5 sec (2.875 sec), Heightened (70%) = 1.5 sec (1.725 sec)
Rounds per Adrenaline Rush: Hardened = 29.16 (33.54), Heightened = 17.5 (20.125)
Base Damage per Adrenaline Rush: Hardened = 621.25 (714.4375), Heightened = 372.75 (428.6625)
Damage Adjusted per Adrenaline Rush: Hardened (+100%) = 1242.5 (1428.875), Heightened (+140%) = 894.6 (1028.79)

I use

Hardened Adrenaline Rush
Concussive Shot (1/4)
Heavy Disruptor Ammo
Inferno Ammo
Shock Trooper
Area or Heavy Reave (don't really use this one a lot)

I play on insanity and to be honest it is quite easy aside from obviously challenging encounters like Tali's recruitment mission. In addition, with a few health increasing armor pieces and Hardened Adrenaline Rush the soldier can withstand a significant amount of damage comparing to, say, adept who I simply can't play on insanity without pulling my hair off.

Here's one of the videos I've recorded.

Nice vid, Gr4ntus, AR + Rev is awesome combination!

Adepts can take a lot of damage (get Heavy Barrier) - I love playing Adept on Insanity. It ain't hard at all. Just use squadies and guns for defense stripping and it's (biotic) playtime! Or give your Adept a Claymore

I recently played through as an Adept [Import from ME 1 @ L60 ... not NG+] and it wasn't too bad. Initially it was a cake-walk. Later on I started running into more issues but as a rule of thumb if you sit back and spam powers you're in pretty good shape.

On the other hand Soldiers [esp. after recent DLCs] have it easy.

I don't know, I've been playing Garrus recruitment mission recently and I died like ten times before completing it. When I played my soldier, not a single merc/mech got across the bridge and I wasn't even trying. On an adept, however, I had to reload five times before I got through that bridge part because I not only failed to keep the bridge clear but also managed to die in the process. In other words, soldiers rule!

Soldiers are a lot of fun, indeed. But I wouldn't say they are so much more powerful than the adept. Especially the bridge section you are referring to was a blast for me to play as an adept. I placed a singularity in the middle of the bridge and kept spraying with the SMG. The protections got torn of, the guys were floated by singularity - and subsequently thrown down the bridge. Very effective and very funny.

As for the hardened/heightened AR. I'm not a very good shot, so I always take heightened AR. The better time dilatation makes it much easier to aim for me, so in praxis I do always more damage with heightend, simply because I got more shots hitting the target :)

I can kill enemies as soon as they appear on the battlefield with the addition of the mattock, It's ridiculous. These new weapons in conjunction with the widow effectively make the soldier a super soldier. Each weapon feels like a heavy weapon with the amount of damage they each deal in and out of AR.

Here is something awesome I discovered with the Shadow Broker DLC that should help out soldiers somewhat.

You know how when a squad mate unlocks their bonus power they get one point in it by default? I hate that because I (like a good number of people here) use a Squad Ammo for my squad and so when Garrus, Jack, and Thane get their bonus ammo power a point is needlessly wasted in it and thus they have 3 extra squad points just sitting there that they can't do anything useful with.

Well, if you use the Advanced Training terminal in the Shadow Broker Intel Center it refunds ALL the squad points, including the one that defaults in the bonus power slot. This lets you max out the 3 other talents for Garrus, Jack, and Thane and not waste points in their ammo power since they are getting your squad power anyway.

You could theoretically use this with other squad mates if you didn't like their given bonus power, but the three squad mates above are the only ones I did this with.

Jack's squad warp ammo is much more usefull then maxing shockwave, wich is kinda useless on insanity. Also Garrus's Squad AP ammo is usefull too, much more then concussive shot. Put 1 point to that power, but no more on insanity ...

Oh I don't know, I like having Garrus with Heavy Concussive Shot. Gives him something to do against the occasional Vanguard's barrier, and can be used to finish off someone near death that I couldn't be bothered wasting bullets on.

I use it more as an anti-husk device or an emergency stagger skill than a barrier breaker.  I'm not convinced it does anything significant to barriers.

yes. and one point is enough for that, no need putting 10points to CS.

Adrenaline Rush 6points (rank 3)
Concussive shot 1point (rank 1)
Disruptor Ammo 3points (rank 2)
Inferno Ammo 10points
Squad Cryo Ammo 10points
Commando 10points
Heavy Barrier/Heavy Geth Shield boost 10points

Special Weapon: Claymore
Other weapons: Carnifex,Mantis,Vindicator, Avalanche

Reasons: My main weapon is the claymore using it for close range combat, im mostly using AR for getting close to enemies.

Build 2:
Hardened Adrenaline Rush 10points
Concussive shot 1point (rank 1)
Disruptor Ammo 6points (rank 3)
Incendiary Ammo 3 points (rank 2)
Squad Cryo Ammo 10points

Special Weapon: Revenant
Other weapons: Carnifex,Mantis,Eviscerator,Avalanche

Reasons: My main weapon is the Revenant, with rank 3 disruptor and heavy warp ammo, im prepared against any type of defense, while my squad is freezing enemies for me. With this build i didnt really feel i need GSB or Barrier. I also have a third profile with Widow.

I just wanted to say that I found Average Gatsby on YouTube randomly looking up Mass Effect vids after I finished a Hardcore Paragon Adept and used his tips on the soldier to do a NG+ Insanity run as a soldier. It was a lot of fun and I decided to hop on these forums.
