I'm at the part of the main story where the next step is to acquire the Reaper IFF.  I just got Samara in my party.  Before get her in my party, I completed every assignment available up until this point.

Problem is - I can't seem to unlock Samara's loyalty mission.  I've left the Normandy and come back several times, but I can't get past the first conversation with her.  And I've read in guides that if I don't complete every available loyalty mission prior to acquiring the Reaper IFF, there will be problems with the suicide mission later in the game.

Is there something I can do to unlock the loyalty mission?  Did I mess up by completing all of the assignments before getting Samara on my team?

you have time to do her loyalty mission after the IFF.

Thanks. I'm trying to avoid massive spoilers, while still getting the best result I can.

I read somewhere that, after the IFF mission, you're sort of forced to go straight to the suicide mission. If you opt to do side missions at this point (such as loyalty missions), more of your crew will die in the suicide mission. So that is not true?

after the IFF activates you only have time to do 2 missions, then crew start to die.

Did you, perchance, not talk to the merc hiding in the room with the pistol during Samara's recruitment mission? The asari, who you find out, later, is the killer the Illium cop is searching for? She's the one the starts the Ardat-Yakshi talk. At least, this is the only thing I've come up with, as far as a reason why you aren't getting the mission to trigger.

Yeah. I talked to the merc you're talking about. I think I may simply need to do the IFF mission. In the past, it seems like loyalty missions were only unlocked after I completed some other mission or assignment.

You got any N7 missions that you can do?

Unlike ME1, side missions will trigger new conversations with your crew, so if you haven't done all those yet you can get Samara's mission conversation that way, otherwise, as Collider said, you do have a small ammount of time to wrap up loose ends after the IFF mission.

As I said, I've done all the side missions already. I guess I'll just have to move forward with the IFF mission.

The only thing I don't like about ME2 is the way the game periodically forces you to advance in the main story. I'm guessing they did this to create a sense of urgency, but it really detracts from the sense of exploration.

so in ME1 no urgency, shep has too much time to dilly dally around
ME2 you feel rushed, not enough time to dilly dally around?

When did you recruit her?

Her recruitment mission was basically the last possible thing I could do prior to starting the IFF mission.

I've completed every other recruitment mission, explored every available planet, and finished every available side quest/assignment.

I thought ME1 was just right in this area.  But I find ME2's combat system and storyteling vastly superior to ME1.

Unless your willing to use the save game editor then like you said you will have to do it after the IFF mission.

Here is what you do you recruit everyone you can first.

Then after every is recruited people unlock new diolog so keep talking to everyone right after they are recruited and any mission you go on. You should go on all the N7 mission and loyalty mission before the Reaper IFF.

Once that is all done and Legion comes on board talk to him twice and do his loyalty mission and then talk to him again after his mission get his special rife for himself. Make sure you have all the upgrade you can. Then you should be ready for the suicide mission
