I have wanted to make a mage, but the one thing that has kept me from doing so is the fact that you can damage your party members with spells. and with most of your team in close combat melee style on your enemies. I'm afraid i'll make the party wipe over and over by casting spells.

Totally wrong forum.
Friendly fire is not such a big deal. It's usually only a problem with primal spells. Play on the easier difficulties and it's lessened or removed. I attempt to not cast spells on my allies but sometimes do so purposefully.
The only spells I nearly or actually caused a party wipe with are Storm of the Century and Paralysis Explosion (oops).
