How do you choose which character falls off the platform only to be narrowly rescued by Shepard? I want it to be Miranda (for dramatic and romantic reasons) but for some reason it ended up being Grunt (which looked funny, a human holding up a krogan). What controls this factor or is it random?

I think it's random but I don't really know for sure...

I have heard that it is the 2nd one that you pick from the selection screen. In all of my playthroughs except for 1, the same squadmate that I helped also helped me on the ship.

Hm. I once saved Grunt from falling to his death but Jacob saved me from falling off of the ship.

Re-read my post.

In a related incident - when one teammember gets swarmed by the seekers (if you use the wrong biotic) it appears that it is neither random nor determined by the order you pick your squadmembers. If that is correct, then there exists probably some internal ranking of all team members determining who is more likely to be used for that scene (kinda like who gives Paragon/Renegade comments in ME1 during missions).

If the same applies for the platform fall, then it may well be that Miranda can never be the one used for that scene (I heard that Miranda can never be the one carried away by the seeker swarm).

I've played the suicide mission several times now and I've tried to make it so that I save Tali from falling off the platform just so I can get the scene from the trailer. The first couple times I didn't even use her but since I've tried to make it a point to recreate the trailer scene I can't seem to do it. I always end up saving the other character. So far I've saved Miranda, Legion, Grunt and Thane. I thought I made her the 2nd choice last night but I could be wrong.

On another note the one time I used Miranda as the biotic she let Thane die. I'm sticking with Samara and Jack for that one...

Choose the person who you want to save and be saved by as the second squadmate. Do not pick Jacob or Miranda as they will over rule the second squadmate and save you (probably because they are the first squaddies you get, meant to be main LI etc)

Miranda is a **** and a half to kill, nonloyal she survived the getting shot thing (that must be one strong shirt) and the final hold the line thing.

I wish I had known about the nonloyal Biotic thing, I accidentally killed SAMARA (!!!) by using a non-loyal Jack to hold the biotic barrier. Stoopid Jack. :(

Safest route seems to be second slot. Also, Grunt loves the OP.

I saved Grunt and the loaded a save I made right before the final fight to do it again and it ended up being Miranda the second time. So it seems kinda random to me since there was no squad selection screen involved. Though loading can sometimes shuffle your squad around (IE makeing the left one the right one), so maybe that's what happened.

Yes, that's what happened to me. I picked Grunt second and saved him from falling but then Jacob saved me from falling off the ship.

So I chose Tali as my 2nd squad mate for the final battle. And I still ended up saving Thane but Tali did save me when I jumped on the Normandy. Very strange I can't get this to work...
