Many fans have debated about this topic for such a long time and it is still a one of hot issues. But juding by the flow of the storyline of the game... Let's face it... It's Tali.

Why? Here's evidence...

1. Tali has been with Shepard in every series (and most likely in the third one)

2. She was in 'love' with him ever since they met in the Citadel (thanks for the typo)

3. Unlike other heroines in any Mas Effect series... she is the only one who has a love scene theme song coming in when She and Shepard is sharing their feeling (not a sex scene)

4. Dat Ass...

I agree with you and have recognized her importance way before I actually liked her in ME1 (I hated her at first, all the way until the very last few hours of my first playthrough). Even more so in ME2, but for absolutely different reasons.

Tali's importance in the overarching story will lie with the final solution between the Geth and the Quarians, who are definitely one of the main focuses in the ME universe.

its a matter of point of view, you see it as that, i see nothing expect Tali as my Shepards "little sister" that i have to protect from the moment i meet her and make sure nothing hurts her. So in my Shepards mind the through of the romance makes no sense since it puts her in danger for one and like i said shes his "little sister"

We can't know for certain who will be most important in ME3. Ashley now outranks Shepard, and if he returns to the alliance, Ashley probably won't let aliens on her ship.

In what military organization in the galaxy does an NCO outrank an officer?

Liara could also be considered the main heroine like Rodriguer said. She was what allowed Shepard to find the conduit (or something) and also saved Shepard from being the Shadow Broker's bargaining piece. I would consider Liara to be more important than Tali (Tali was important in ME1 for the evidence against Saren but other than that she was not needed) and the only heroine of the trilogy.

What if Tali dies in a playthrough? Then she won't be in the third game, so her role can't be that important.

I would even say Liara is the most obvious "main heroine" (apart from femShep of course).

She plays a rather large part in the resolution of the plot in ME1 (Tali only has one moment of fame in the beginning); she is the one who recovers Shepard's body and sets the events of ME2 in motion; and her current hunt for the Shadow Broker may also be of some importance in ME3 (at least as likely as the Geth conflict becoming important - unless they put the whole Shadow Broker thing into the comic).

Bingo. Tali's character is more expendable to Bioware than Liara's.

Liara was what allowed Shepard to find the conduit and
also saved Shepard from being sold to the Collectors, and is subsequentially responsible for Cerberus being able to bring you back.

I would rank the heroines like this.

1. Liara

2. Miranda

3. Tali

4. Ashley

Ashley could be switched with Tali if you consider how she was part of one team or the other on Virmire.

She was a gunnery chief petty officer in ME1. She is an operations chief petty officer in ME2. She is still a non-commissioned officer.

Kaiden was promoted from Lieutenant to Lt.Commander which is one level up from ME1. I'm making an assumption about this because otherwise it would be two levels up to a full Commander in two years. It's a video game so anything is possible but that would be unusual.

I was just about to post this same list. Liara helps piece together the prothean stuff in ME1 and eventually recovers Shepards body. Miranda had opportunities to recover Shepard's body but was told no by TIM (read Redemption #3), and then was in charge of bringing Shep back to life. Tali's only moment is the audio snippet to oust Saren as a traitor. The rest of the women in Shepard's crew don't do anything of importance otherwise.

Well in my play through, Tali tried to catch a bullet with her faceplate and failed... Like grey matter everywhere failed. So I'm gonna have to disagree with you here. Shepard's main squeeze is whoever you want it to be or survived.

Liara will still be alive in ME3. Tali is likely to be as well in most peoples game since she's way more popular than Miranda. Plenty of people can't stand Miranda and will kill her off in ME2. She isn't important to anyone other than TIM and fanboys.

EDIT: Had to correct myself because obviously Ashley is dead for a lot of people that played ME1.
