never encounter long loading time in win xp and win 7.my suggestion is, revert back to Windows XP and see if this solve the problem. mostly the developer still using Windows XP as they test platform.
i already finish the game 3 time and waiting for next chapter, Mass Effect 3.right now concentrate on bioshock 2 and battlefield bad company 2.

one more thing, if you encounter BSOD, it's software problem. unsigned driver mostly cause this problem and if possible, install official driver. some unsigned driver work in win 7 but some might not work and can cause BSOD. don't forget update your windows to the latest. for sound card, remove it and test onboard sound. Do It Yourself maintenance cause i never send my pc to computer shop for repair instead i solve it by myself.due respect, i do repair other people pc with minimal charged.

I have same problem just since today, I have had a few crashes b4 but nothing what a restart didn't fix. But now if I start the game where I last saved (resume) it crashes. I have a nice systemspec:
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Processor
4,00 GB RAM
ATI RADEON 5850
WD VelociRaptor
Asus M4A77Pro
Anyone? I have latest drivers of ATI... and I really like ME2. I have just Thane onboard

Here I go... same as most of U. The game crashes, screen goes black and only manual reboot is possible. When I load a save game, sometimes it crashes right away, some times it takes more 5 to ten minutes. I've benn running tests for two days now... nothing yet.
Window Vista Home Premium 32
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8 E7400
Asus P5Q-e (on board soundMAX)
ATI 4850 (Catalyst 10 - updated)
4gb Ram
I only havent tried the ATI Cross Fire Hotfix and I must verify if my Windows has recognized the dual core processor...
I'm Runing the game with only Film Grain On and AA filtering at 4x (tried it off and still crashes).
The symptoms make me believe it's not a GPU issue... anyways...

I have more oil to add to the flames
BSOD on exiting planet scan after mining minerals. Crash occurs on "return" symbol click.
BSOD posted: wrong request was made from USB_device on port 4.
The only USB device attached to my system is USB Logitech G5 wired lazer mouse!!
WTF!
Is this USB mouse compatibility issue now?! I don't think so, Bioware!
Have 2 mice attached: PS2 for mining and USB for fighting, LMHO.
Wondering what other weird things are out there in ME2 Universe.
If this forum is moderated could someone post the spects for a PC BioWare uses for QA?
I am willing to build a clone.

I tested 2 things now:
1. if i start a new game it works fine.
2. Just for the test i set all graphic options on "off"
The savegame starts just after the pickup with Thane, and it will crash after the conversation ends in the comm room. If I either want to open the menu (esc) or i try to interact with something... If i just wait in the comm room nothing happens. So it's definitly some bug in the game, which appears after a certain part in the story. probably when a certain procedure is called upon.
My computer does not need a reboot after crash win7 appears with a notification. Trying 1 more test; wat happens if i just go to other rooms in th ship.
But i still miss a reaction of a mod, r u guys taking this seriously?

ok I get many crashes also,
Win 7 64bit
Nvidia 9800GT 1gb - (+ latest drivers)
ASUS P5K-VM
Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.4GHz
8 gb ddr2 ram
realteck alc883 (+ latest sound drivers)
I use Games booster to shut down unnecessary apps
Crashes to desktop only, and it only does it during a fight, and usually after 1-2 hours of play.
I check temps using RealTemp, and nothing is overheated.
I've lowered the resolution, and it 'seemed' to work for a day or so without crashing, but they have returned.
Its a tad frustrating

i already did all my test, and some of you suggested the graphics card is the problem, one person here posted he/she turned down the graphic and still the problem arises,
i conclude that the problem is the game, i did not experience these problems with my other games, will bioware please post a solution to this problem, for now my pc is not crashing, but my game shuts down sometimes.

I hate to patronise you but its not the game as I and many others are running it flawlessly without a single hitch, in fact it is one of the most stable games I have played recently.
Have you tried different graphic card drivers as the lastest ones seems to have issues with some of the newest games.

In my case, I have updated my drivers when I got the first crashing sequence.... I've built my PC by August Last year and havent updated my drives since... even the motherboard drivers (as sound and chipset) were the ones that Windows Vista had chosen at the time (the sound driver was a 2006 update!!!). Still I've played ME1, Dragon Age, Fallout 3 with max graphic configuration and had no issues!!!
Then it came ME2 and now I'm in a quest to get it working properly!!!

Addon to the problem, the new game i started worked fine, untill i came from cerebrus station and the game tried to load the normandy (1st time). Then it crashes the same way it did on the other savegame. So it's something in the ship i recon. I'll try and reinstall the game but i doubt that will solve it, because it worked fine till now.
@harrykim306: I have the latest ATI drivers and it a very recent win7 install; 15-2 and i have this machine especially for gaming and thus no other software installed, noone else even touches this pc...

Ok, I don't know if any of this will work, but it has helped others in this forum who weren't able to play the game.
People with AMD Dual Core processors:
There is an AMD dual core optimizer patch avaliable from AMD that has helped some people get rid of problems. This will only work on dual cores from AMD. Here's the link:
support.amd.com/us/Pages/dynamicDetails.aspx
People With ASUS Motherboards:
Asus has a built-in feature in the BIOS that automatically overclocks your system whenever it deems necessary. ME2 doesn't like Overclocks very much. Some people have had success by disabling this feature. This may also apply to other boards like DFI, Gigabyte, MSI and so on, if they also offer that feature.
People with NForce Chipsets:
Some people have had success by updating all the drivers on motherboards with Nforce chipsets (like chipset, sound, LAN, etc.)
People with 5.1/7.1 soundcards:
I can't understand why, but some people have been playing the game hassle-free since removing their soundcards and playing only with the onboard sound.
Hope this helps.

@terminus pi
Good tips, that's what i talking about...
another tips....don't install your game in drive C...install in drive D if you have 2 partition.leave alone drive C with windows software only, not game software.this is to make sure you don't mess around with windows data.
people, follow the step @terminus pi given above one by one.it's is good step.

for the ati card user, if the latest driver cause problem, try the old driver.newer ati driver known to be have problem with in some game but older driver might work.also try disable crossfire or sli if problem still occur.most today game still using single card configuration rather using crossfire and sli.

Ok, I've been playing for a couple of hours and no crash... I've followed a few Terminus Pi steps and it seem to be working. In my case:
I haven't realy disabled Asus Aitwek (overclock) becouse it has no off option so, I tried to manually input the numbers following most of the factory specs for my CPU and GPU chips.
Then, I've disabled ATI Catalyst Overdrive and had to set my GPU fan speed to 80%, keeping the GPU under 60ºC (Since the avarage day here in Brazil is 34ºC!!!)
Still in Catalyst Control, I've manually set all the 3D options half way up, only, and tried to keep the game settings under that configuration (e.g. A-Filtering x4 in Catalyst Control, since my max is x8 and set x2 in the game config tool).
After 3 days tests, I came to a Conclusion that this is the same kind of crashing some people (like me) were experiencing with Storm of Zehir, the NWN2 expansion... all the symptoms lead to that.
Let's wait for a Bioware position on this!!! Bioware???

Problem solved!
Bioware is in clear:wizard:
The South bridge overheating was a cause of random crashes tha appeared as sound card and USB mouse "problem".
Windowed mode allowed me to have 2 monitors.
The game ran on one and AMD overdrive + Catalist center on another.
That's how I saw high temp on one of the bridges.
Took off both North and South bridge heat sinks, clean and re-apply the compaund.
Put 2 extra case fans blowing directly at the bridges.
16 hours of gaming over the weekend on "hardcore" without single crash.
Here's what I learned.
Don't rely on the factory heat management If your PC is at least 1 year old.
You might be surprised to find what is left under the bridges!
My North bridge compaund was as hard as dried glue on both sink and the chip.
Same thing under South bridge though the chip surface was relatively clean like sink hardly touched it!
I'd like to thank you all for giving me right ideas

Heating is not an issue on my computer and is not the problem. The problem is that every time I start the game and get to "press any ket to continue" the game crashes immediatly after that. Still awaiting some ideas for my issue as this isnt' "I played for 10 min and it crashed...." Thats a different bug apparantly.

I have a I7 overclocked to 4 Ghz, absolutely stable with all the application and games up to now tested (Assassin Creed, FarCry 2, Battlefield Bad Company, Medusa 3D Benchmark). The PC is W7, 12 GB RAM, Quad SLI of 295 GX2, Thermaltake 1,5 KW PSU, GIGABYTE X58 Extreme MoBo, SSD Patriot 128GB System Disk, Realtek Audio, 3D vision NVIDIA with glasses and 120Hz 1900 x 1080 ACER monitor
No way to go with Mass Effect 2 over the search of command room, the PC frozen up with audio working and black screen, only reset allow to exit. This without 3D vision setted, the 3D simply do not work (monitor display a stereo frame but glasses do not activate.
Any suggestion?

Mmmh, ok, now is clear, seems to be an incompatibility with Quad SLI. Really Quad SLI work with NVidia panel and other games but do not work with Mass Effect 2. Going to simple SLI (not Quad) solve the problem. Waiting for next Patch or Nvidia Driver release

Ok, Brand New Velocity Micro, hexcore, Radeon 5970, 6 G DDR3, Win 7 64 bit, up to date drivers. Mass Effect 2 will freeze and occasionaly BSOD even at very modest resolutions. Can't cont/alt/del out of lockup and have to power off system and reboot. This also occurs with Bioshock 2 and Dragon Age. I found that if I run Mass Effect 2 in Windowed mode from the startup configuration panel everything works fine (Haven't tried the others yet.).
Any thoughts on what is really going on here?
