i love that spell, ive only just made a new playthrough and started using spirit magic so right now im enjoying blood soaked explosions for the first time.

on a side note kinda makes me wonder if the chantry is a little to preoccupied with blood magic!

You have to look at it from the Chantry's perspective. With Walking Bomb the occasional Revered Mother may blow up, but with Blood Magic, Revered Mothers could start giving the Chantry's money back, distributing free lyrium, being kind to elves, or worst of all, dancing the tango in the middle of services.

Which is the greater evil: Exploding clerics or solo sexy latin dancing?

It's a personal favorite, although I rarely use it. It's simply too unpredictable at higher difficulties unless your mage is specially suited for casting it.
It can reliably kill anything - friend of foe - alike.

I love the walking bomb spell, one of my favorites. During one of my play throughs Wynne killed Flemeth with it. Poor Flemeth just exploded all over the place. I really enjoyed watching that, made me laugh.

I normally cast this on main bosses and when the boss health is nearly done for. Doesn't work to well with Gaxkang though, he resists.

I was abit skeptical at first but after seeing it in action I was hooked. Now I start off with a Stining Swarm followed with one of the Walking Bombs usually on a target clustered with the poor fellow. The swarm chews on the primary target, it jumps to the 2nd, BLAM! gibbed...then spread to everyone else. It pretty much chews through anything ranked normal or lower without slowing down.

I made a walking bomb mage a little while ago, full entropy + walking bomb line and blood mage/spirit healer.
The base strategy was :
1. put 2 warriors in front and taunt everything + stunning way cry
2. sleep -> mass paralysis -> affliction hex -> virulent walking bomb & walking bomb -> death cloud
3. rez wormbaits err... warriors ^^ -> cleansing aura
4. start over

Talk about crazy bombing...

Who cares about your warrior bait if you're an evil mage? For those situations where you don't manage to control the battlefied sufficiently to use vwb safely, just nuke all of it and let the maker sort them out. :P

Virulent Bomb infected bunch of mobs + Hand of winter + One with Nature tier 2 spell. = awesome.

Orlesian still at the early stage of the game with poor gear = goddammit. *reloads*

It is definitely spirit damage (the description is wrong) and it is most definitely a combo when casting Virulent Walking Bomb on the same guy you just cast regular Walking Bomb on (the description is again wrong). Virulent Walking Bomb does more damage and can infect others. If you cast Walking Bomb first then Virulent Walking Bomb second you then get Walking Bomb doing the same amount of damage as Virulent Walking Bomb.

Other combinations:
-casting Vulnerability Hex before your Walking Bombs (Vulnerability Hex makes all your non-physical damage much much better with penalties to cold, fire, electricity, nature, and in particular spirit damage) or casting both Vulnerability Hex and Affliction Hex before your Walking Bombs (all on the same guy) getting you MAJOR damage against something like a boss.
-on mobs casting a Walking Bomb gains you threat as a mage so you can get everyone to swarm you, which then makes this a perfect opportunity to cast Force Field (one of if not THE best spell in the game) on yourself so you get a nice close look as you see everything explode right around you! Of course, you are immune to all damage with Force Field engaged.
-Cone of Cold on a swarm, Walking Bomb and/or Virulent Walking Bomb the middle guy, then Stonefist him so he shatters and immediately explodes
-any sequence of anything then Time Spiral

These are some silly things I like to do anyway.... have fun!

This spell has been a game changer for me. all you have to do is focus on one enemy, cast walking bomb on him and watch him explode and kill everyone surrounding him.

I found the best way to do that is have Shale use taunt and draw everyone at him. Plus, Shale can survive the explosion, due to his massive health.
Works everytime.

Anyone else uses the spell? And what tactics do you recomend?

When I was running my  mage, I'd usually use Mass Paralyze, Virulent Walking bomb, then a couple of lightning bolts/archery shots.   BOOM!

The paralyze helps to make sure that the bomb isn't running at you.  :)   It's an alternative to your shale trick.  Safer, and a good opener anyway, if you've got the spell.

Another alernative that I've considered, but not actually tried, was

Virulent Walking Bomb + Mind Control.

Make your target attack his buddies then explode when they kill him.

I love both "walking bomb" spells. The bloody boom is sooooo satisfying!
