It gives you more reources to start with more skill points as you said and more credits you get more credits if you have the rich achievment and things you did will carry over like whether wrex died or not or random people you did quests for

You get even more resources if you complete the UNC collection quests. By the way, what the hell happened to the priceless artifacts I collected all the way through 1?
they proably discontinued them like they did with all the sweet weapons you had!

Bad urban legend. You get more resources only if you import a level 50, and even more of 'em if you import a level 60.
The collection missions do nothing.

Boo-hoo, I lost my Spectre X stuff.
Also, really? I could have sworn I had 150k of each resource on my first import. Granted, that was a level 60 char, so what you're saying could very well be true.

-Resources
-Paragon/Renegade points
-Choices carried over from ME1
It also stacks with the Long Service bonus, making New Game+ virtually useless. In other words:
Problems with New Game+
1. Paragon/Renegade points wiped out (ME1 import is better)
2. Resource and credit bonus less than import (ME1 importing again is better)
3. No further character progression (ME1 import or New Game is better)
4. Cannot change class (ME1 import or New Game is better)
5. Cannot change/add weapon upgrade (ME1 import or New Game is better)
6. Insanity achievement already gained (with ME1 import or New Game)
7. The difficulty levels out and becomes equal to importing/New Game once you obtain most upgrades, not to mention you started fully spec'd with your weapon upgrade and heavy weapons.

Then again I got wiser since my original discovery of those limitations and I now simply mod my saves(yes that would be xbox360 saves) for money, minerals, paragon/renegade points and heat sinks.

The reason that I will always import a ME1 character is that you get to chose what happens in ME1, and not have the crappy pre-selected ones.
Well you still get the ME1 choices if you import a ME2 character for which you imported a ME1 character during previous playthrough....if that makes any sense....I hope I was clear enough.

-Start you off with bonus minerals
-Bonus credits
-Keep ME1 looks if you want or change them
-Start off with a higher level

Sure why not? You could probably try and bore my ear off about it not being right or ethical or whatever strikes your fancy but the fact remains that at least in terms of minerals BioWare is just plain trying to waste hours and hours of my time while the paragon and renegade morality bars are esentially designed to restrict me to either retarded paragon or idiotic renegade paths if I want to save my entire crew or if I want to have a choice regarding a crew member. I like tha paragon and renegade system as long as it's not trying to force me to chose one or the other for the entire game, I want to be able to chose what I feel makes sense without being pressed into OMG I better stick to renegade only to have enough points to save this and that because without full renegade I can't have the simple common sense to not pick a side or remind them we need to work together to defeat a bigger threat.....I essentially have to be retarded for my character to start having common sense.
In terms of minerals they are only there to waste hours of my time. I played ME1 over 30 times from start to end and I'll do the same with ME2 but I won't put up with the scanning BS. Infinite Heat Sinks? I'm just getting back what I had in the first game....I still have to relod/replace where there were cooldowns and that's all I want. Not that I had poblems finding ammo it just gets tedious with weapons like the Widow and the hand cannon that never carry more than a dozen or two heat sinks. With money just like with ammo I'm just getting back what I had in ME1....the no pressure feeling that hey "I'm a Spectre, not some merc for hire. I can find credits everywhere."

is that just any level character or does it have to be something like level 60?

I get a bonus 330,000 staring credits and 55,000 (or is it 56,000) bonus of each mineral whenever I import an ME1 character. I still have to make money and find more minerals if I want to buy/upgrade everything (except eezo).
That is ME1 bonus with ME2 long service medal...

I played the game always choosing basically whatever option I would pick in real life or what made the most sense to me, ended up with a fairly even paragon/renegade split leaning towards renegade by maybe 10-20% and got everyone through alive. Since this isn't a multiplayer game and there isn't even a "leaderboard", I really don't see why anyone would give two s**ts if someone else mods their saves, it's only cheating to me if the game is somehow competitive - but you don't have to go force yourself in one direction or the other to save everyone.
Anyway, on top of the resource bonuses that have been mentioned here, which do make a big difference given how tedious planet scanning is - if you're asking because you're wondering if it's worth playing ME1 before you get to ME2 then yes, yes, a million times yes. No matter what the complainers here say, the story in ME2 is a hell of a lot more rewarding if you've played ME1. I d/led ME1 from XBL and beat it before I started ME2, and you have no idea how glad I am I didn't just jump right into ME2.
