so he is a darkspawn, i would've thought he was half human half demon or something, kinda like a male version of desire demon.

Oh that is...kind of fail. Why did anyone think that the talking Darkspawn was the Architect, who did you think the creepy guy with the pope hat was, a Wagon Salesman? No wimpy little Darkspawn with a voice could pull off the Architect's coolness factor.

This info has been in the DragonAge Wiki for a long time, a little while after the announcement of Awakening. He is even in the novel The Calling(name right?). Described close to what he looks like in the picture.

Though I'm guessing not many look up things in the wiki or read the books, so it's k.

what's his description in the books? as i understand many who read the book mistook the deciples to be the architect.

eh what? he looks NOTHING like he is described in the calling

in the calling he looked like your normal Darkspawn except he carried a staff and wore brown robes

plus he got his hand chopped off towards the end

This cannot be the architect. It has both hands!

Well it could be the architect but I'm disappointed as, in one of the prelude novels, the architect had one of his hands hacked off in combat but escaped. I'm looking forwards to seeing if there's any in game attempt to explain this major continuity error. I'd kind of hoped he'd perished from his wound as he slunk away, but clearly he's back, bigger and badder than ever (and with both hands again). So something pretty nasty must've happened and maybe now he's sort of on life support due to his close brush with death.

Time will tell.

Yeah in the books the Architects appearance is more like the Disciples, at least in my mind. However the voice, and the way it speaks was a dead give away to me as to who was who.
Oh and doesnt it say in The Calling that it and the darkspawn have some pretty crazy regeneration? Its been a long time since its hand was choped off. Maybe that explains it.

Props to that voice actor, seems like they nailed the Architect. =)

Exorzist needs to be made a mod so he can make these threads sticky. Good information getting bumped down the page.

I know that a regular darkspawn with brow robes wouldn't make the most memorable villain but here he seems a bit over the top. I mean, what's up with the bizarre mask and huge hands?
However, I must say that if I haven't read the book I probably would've liked his model.

Highly unlikely. Utha never wore armour.

Man no character in a movie (or in this case video game) EVER looks like you imagined they did while reading the book.

Utha did actually have a weapon she used a few times... i think it was a club

but since theres no unarmed combat skill tree they probably just gave her a sword+shield so she wouldent be ****** easy in combat

Utha, as described in the books, wore a simple brown robe, had reddish hair worn in a plait, fought unarmed and only occasionaly used a weapon that reminds one of a nunchaku.

After her transformation she was bald and had tainted skin, just as all darkspawn, but still resembled a dwarven woman much more than a Genlock. Apart from that she had blood red eyes by then.

That dwarf in the picture wears heavy armor, short hair and a sword. The Taint on her would be more along the state described about two-thirds through The Calling.

One doesn't need a lot of imagination, with the description of her and the others in that book. Therefore it differs not so much from any personal imagination as simply from Gaider's words he put down.

Same goes for the Architect in Awakening, as he has (absolutely) no resemblance to the one in The Calling. And it is not even about him having one or two hands. More along the lines of feral repulsiveness versus stylish whateverness. Much like comparing Nosferatu and Edward.

I suspect Utha is wearing armor due to game engine limitations or something technical.

I don't suppose that mentioning that 15+ years have passed since the Calling and Awakening might make a difference?  I know lots of people who don't look much like they did a decade or two ago and that's without enduring the taint, a risen archdemon, possessing magic and all... ;)  As for Utha (if that indeed is Utha and not a disciple of hers), maybe she's taken to stealing/possessing bodies like Flemeth! LOL

All I'm saying is that we shouldn't base our final judgement on a short trailer and a few artwork sketches...

But the voice acting (as usual) sounds superb.  Anyone else think it's Robin Sachs?
