I am playing through ME2 on Insane. I now have a couple of Shepards stuck at the 1st battle.I have tried restarting the mission and choosing different team members. Is there a recommended team that lasts more than 5 seconds,or some very fast way to bring the collectors down, before Harbinger comes along. On all other difficulty levels this battle was never a big problem! I know it's insane but I'm getting sick of restarting every few minutes!

Help!!! (please!)

On a minor note is it me or on this level on insane does the option to chose another weapon class go? (just prior to the problem battle!)

Are you on NG+ (import from ME 2 save), what character class are you using?

You are saying that you didn't get a weapon specialization? What heavy weapon are you using and who is in your squad?

I've tried the beam weapon, arc lightening thingy only one I've not used is cain (no full charge)

The specialization thing I mean is where you discover the collectors are prothean. In all previous play throughs I was able to pick up either an assault rifle, shotgun or Legions widow sniper rifle. It isn't appearing on this playthrough. (it was there on the other insane playthrough -although the battle still only lasts a couple of minutes/seconds!)

The battle problem is that you get hammered from a distance when trying to take out collectors then swarmed by Harbinger who can knock me out of cover that wipes me out almost straight away.

One of the most effective powers against the Collectors is Warp. I prefer to evolve it to heavy warp once 4 points are in it. Even on insanity, one hit from Heavy Warp will take out the biotic barrier of your average Collector. The Guardians and Assassins will take more than one shot. I usually have Reave -> Area Reave on my Sheppard, which eats through barriers and armor as well.

I take Miranda and Thane with me on this mission. In fact, once I get Thane, I take these 2 witn me on any mission when I'm up against Collectors. With both them using Heavy Warp and Thane using Group Shredder Ammo, Collects go down pretty fast. The only real threats in that mission are scions and those big blue flying cajiggers (forget what they're called, sorry). But again, multiple Heavy Warps and Reave can take them down fairly quickly.

Another effective weapon against the large heavily armored enemies is to use the Viper sniper rifle with fire ammo. Of course, if you're not a soldier or infiltrator you would had to have taken sniper rifle training to use it.

I would just go for those that are more effective against Collectors instead of those with more survivability.

Miranda. If I remember correctly, you don't have Thane and Samara yet, so Jack for combos with Miranda, or
Zaeed/Grunt.

edit: Oh sorry, you can have Thane, Samara OR Zaeed before the ship.

I think the key to this is really micromanaging your squad and taking out Harbinger before he gets close enough to destroy them. Don't let them take cover in one place for each of the platforms. If the platform is coming from a different angle, move them to different cover to compensate. You need to be a little reckless to keep the Collectors back so don't be afraid to sacrifice your shields for some good shots. Use powers liberally.

Are you getting the collectors by themselves or do you still have the Scions attacking you?

On insanity Scions tend to decimate your squad members. But the trick is to take down both of their health to a low amount and kill both quickly because once you kill one more collectors will spawn.

Other than that make sure to take cover from Harbinger but when he throws whatever it is that knocks you out of cover stand up or move to a different position. The other collectors aren't that difficult to take out but harbinger controlled units will start to charge you.

Well I'm off to have another go. I have heavy warp, a loyal Miranda and Thane so I'll try this combo.

I struggle to find cover where the two scions don't smash you down.... but it sounds like shoot and move is the key.......

Cheers for the advice everyone!

You can have them both by the time you get to the collector ship, if you don't go for Tali first.  You probably won't have Thane loyal yet, though, so the shredder ammo won't come into play until the final mission.

Yep! No shredder ammo yet - hopefully normal ammo will work..... As soon as the Tv is free I shall find out.

Congrats.

Here I was just about to suggest going crazy with your heavy as you get topped off between every scene on the suicide mission.
