The armor options, like sentry interface/sheild harness, etc. provide a shield boost percentage.

However the Adept classs has a barier.

Do these armor options also boost the barier or are they choices best left unused as an Adept?

The adept class only has a barrier if you choose it as a bonus power. Otherwise they have the kinetic barrier like every other Shepard. I think the best armor option for an Adept is the Dragon Age armor. If you don't have that content, then you want to focus on power % boost and perhaps some shield % boost.

Umbra Visor

N7 Chest Plate

Amplifier Plates

Max power damage for Adepts if you have the Umbra Visor but don't have Blood Dragon Armor. If you have BDA, use that, as it beats these parts.

No, they have Barrier (as their shield amount on their character sheet) no matter what, just like Grunt has Armor and an Infiltrator has Shields.  It's made confusing by the fact that Barrier is also the name of a loyalty skill, but their shield stat is called Barrier no matter what.

That's why i'm asking. I've tried using the armor sets for increased shields and they don't seem to make a difference.

On top of that, the adept has a biotic barrier. It's a purple barrier power bar unlike the blue one for shields. In addition, in the squad powers screen it's clearly listed as Health/Barrier whereas my Infiltrator and Soldier have the item listed as Health/Shield.

It seems that the only boost is from Jacob's loyalty power.

Have you actually changed gear, went to a mission and looked at the numbers in your squad screen? There should be a difference.

Furthermore, each protection boost power (jacob's barrier, grunt's fortification etc.) applies to both the barrier and the shield.

Yeah, you need to go to a mission to notice the increase; Shepard isn't wearing his armor on the ship so he doesn't get the bonuses (you'll notice this with Health or Negotiation as well).
