Spoilers Warning!

This is an adaptation of the no reload challenge which is so popular in the BG series forums. Its all on the honor system, and designed so that those who want this kind of challenge will have a place to share their stories, successes, mistakes, and heartbreaks with others on a similar journey. In other words, its designed for fun.

Rules --

1. No reloading, this one should be obvious. However, if you have to reload because of a bug, crash, or glitch that is ok.

2. In keeping with the spirit of the BG series no reload challenge, the Challenge will fail at any time that your PC dies--even if other party members remain alive. So, if you get the brown skull icon for your PC (player character) you must let us know, and drop out of the challenge. This is the No Death Rule. (Its ok if one of your other party members die. Thats no problem. This rule applies only to the PC. If you decide to make the ultimate sacrifice at the end of the game, that is perfectly ok, because upon your death you will get the epilogue.)

3. No hacked classes, illegal class combinations, or stat/equipment alterations using the toolset.

4. You can have as many or as few party members as you desire. Solo Nightmare, of course, would be the ultimate challenge. I’m not sure a Nightmare solo no reload game could even be done here.

5. Play on any difficulty above “easy”. So normal, hard, or nightmare are acceptable. Of course, the higher difficulties will offer more challenge, and garnish more respect.

6. If you want to use mods, that’s ok. But please avoid any mods that basically make you invulnerable or give you uber items. It wont be that interesting for the rest of us to hear about the adventures of your invincible character.

7. Post your mods, DLCs, character stats, origin, class, and planned specialities in your initial post.

8. Post intermittent progress reports about your progress through the game. We want to hear about your adventures, strategies, and tactics. Role playing and romance progress reports are also fine.

9. Clearly post when your journey has ended. You can enter and re-enter as many times as you would like.

10. No required sub-quests. You will have completed the challenge when you get the epilogue, with no reloads.

But most of all, have fun!

I am going to enter with a Dwarf Noble Rogue, named Brogan Aeducan. Nightmare diff, with Warden's Keep, Shale, and The Edge DLCs. I plan to go Duelist/Assassin, but with archery talents up to Arrow of Slaying.

I plan to mostly duo, and my sidekick will be Leliana. Will pick up other NPCs for their side quests, and will use the forced NPCs where necessary. Both the main char and Leliana will have master stealth, but other rogue skills will be split between us. Plan to make extensive use of scouting and traps. Failure in any fight is not an option, or else its restart time.

Is this for the whole team or just the PC?

What I mean is does the game end when the PC dies or the whole team dies?

I did something like this a few weeks ago with my dex rogue and played the game until one of my team died, I completed lothering and then one of my team members died in one of the random fights.

I also did the no save allowed unless you need to stop for sleep or eat something.

In keeping with the spirit of the BG series no reload games, I have clarified the rules so that any time your PC dies---whether other party members remain alive or not--you fail the challenge. So anytime your PC dies and gets the brown skull icon, thats it. Challenge failed.

Brogan, the dwarven noble rogue, has successfully weathered the stormy politics of Ozzamar. First he defeated all opponents in the Proving Grounds by using hit and run tactics. He then made a deal with Lord Dace to stand up for the noble decended surfacers--for a writ worth 75 sovereigns! After selling this writ and his Dragon Blood Armor to the mercants outside, he ended up with over 100 gold...at level 1. (Fortunately, he gets to keep the gold, even though he will lose all his equipment when arrested.)

He then proceeded very carefully into the Deep Roads with Gorim, Ivo, and his traitorous scout to recover his family shield, only to be betrayed by his brother Bhelen. There were a couple of close calls when fighting the mercenaries in the tomb area. The key to this fight was to retreat away from the traps across the bridge and two rooms back so that the fight could take place at a narrow doorway. Brogan also generally entered each area in stealth so that his party members got aggro first. Then he hung back and peppered the enemies with arrows, while his other party members took the heat. The venture was successful.

After being exiled to the Deep Roads to a certain death for the false charges of fratracide, he stealthed his way to Duncan and a few other Gray Wardens, who were exploring the area. They accepted him into their fold. He then went onto Ostragar where he prepared for his ritual.

The ventures in the Kokari Wilds were largely uneventful. The other recruits, who tanked for him, died a few times, but Brogan remained alive because he stealthed into every encounter, used archery skills where possible, and ran like a scared rabbit where necessary.

During the Ogre fight in the tower, Alistair and the other NPC archer died. But Brogan and the mage took shelter behind some barrels and eventually killed the beast. Well, the mage died also, because the Ogre can still hurl rocks at you, and I didnt have enough health potions for us both. (make sure you have plenty of health potions if you use this, because the rocks hurt.) Yes, this is somewhat of an exploit, but in a no reload game such as this I plan to take advantage of every such exploit I can, because failure (death) is not an option.

After making the journey to Lothering with Morrigan and Alistair, Brogan is now restocking his supplies, and about to recruit a cute ex-chantry girl named Lelianna, at which point Morrigan and Alistair will be sent to Camp. Dog was not picked up on this run because Brogan forgot to give the flower to the kennel keeper. This was an innocent mistake, but upon thinking about it, it may have saved Brogan and party from a difficult encounter on the road to Lothering.

Ye gods! Someone DARES attempt this? Even Baldur's Gate's no reload seems easier (Please, feel free to join the official group here on this site NOW) to me. But I might be insane or delirious because of my higher body temperature.

Oooops. Mayhaps my mage listened Cailan a bit too much since he got overconfident after learning to toss fireballs in the Korcari Wilds. Otherwise no injuries, no friendly fire for anyone until that tragic event when the emissary contrieved to lure him to the other side of the bridge. Unmodded mage wasn't strong enough to nail him with his fireball/glyph of paralyzation and winter's grasp spamming while the others were busy whacking the rogues.

Oh well. I switched from XP to Win 7/32 bit, now the game seems to lag more, but that may be just an excuse. Maybe I resurrect him, since he got just deafened in the brawl and the others took care of the rest. That's a different story in any case.

Hey Dark Lauron, I recognize you as a steadfast member of the BG forums. Gonna give this a shot? Once I complete my rogue duo (hopefully) I am gonna try a solo Nightmare no-reload. Yup, a serious challenge, but one that I think can be done.

Anyway, continuing with Brogan's adventures in Lothering (starting at level 6). When we met up with the bandits on the bridge, I decided the odds were not in our favor. So I persuaded them to pay our little group a toll of 20 silver, and decided to come back for them later, with Lelianna.

We then went straight into Dane's place so that I could pick up Lelianna, at which point Alistair and Morrigan were sent to Camp. This fight was easy with Morrigan's Mind Blast, and Alistairs Taunt, at which point we all focused on the leader. Afterwards I sent a message to Loghain that I was coming for him.

I then did some shopping with my 107 gold! Got Lelianna outfitted, and pick up Thorn of the Dead Gods for Brogan. I figure as a Dwarven Noble, who got paid off by Lord Dace, the super nice dagger in Ozzamar is not too far away.

We then rescued Sten and did the non-combat quests in town before taking on the hoodelums just outside the gates. The key to this fight was to immediately run back to town till they dropped aggro and then go back and pick them off group by group. With the rest of the bandit fights in the area we simply hit them from range, both focussed on the same target till he went down, and then ran back to town till they dropped aggro. When there were only two or three of each group left, we took them on and fought melee. The dogs were targeted first, because their overwhelm is very dangerous. Overall, it was a piece of cake, and neither of us died. On the last group, Brogan hit level 7 and took duelist for his first specialty.

We then went back for the bandits on the bridge. I aggroed them by opening one of their crates while in stealth. Then I shot one of them from stealth (Lelianna doesnt have stealth yet so she waited at the gate to town) and ran like hell, hoping to lure one or two away. Well, three of them, including the leader chased us all the way across the bridge in town, and we had to be careful because the wolves were up. So we stopped and fought in front of Sten's cage. It was dicey because we kept missing our attacks, but with a few health potions we finally killed all three. After cleaning up the remaining two, we turned in the Sir Henric quest and got the update for the Ashes guy in Denerim.

The wolves were not too bad, because we picked them off from range, and if we got too many we simply ran back to town...we were not taking any chances here, because the wolves can be deadly. The bears were also relatively easy. We then killed off the spiders.

The darkspawn on the bridge were first treated to a fire bomb. I then ran down to Lelianna who was waiting below. We killed off the yellow leader and then ran like hell. Yes, we are squishy rogues and have no business trying to tank several mobs at once, at least not yet. We then went back and picked off the rest, running when necessary. After speaking with the Dwarven merchant, we headed to Camp. So far so good. More to come, because I have all day free today.

Now I am starting to sweat bullets. Without combat stealth, two weak little rogues may face insurmountable odds if we get the wrong random encounter, which would be the end. Hmmm, so where should we go? Although its not my normal choice, I am thinking Redcliffe, first because its close and second because its relatively easy. Normally, I head to the Circle...but the thought of the Fade Demon and Uldred without better spell resistance makes me shudder. So here goes a big roll of the dice....we are off to Redcliffe.

Upih, you are free to continue playing your character however you like. But if your PC died fighting the emissary, then you have failed this challenge and will have to restart to continue here. Thats the rules. This is not for the faint of heart. To succeed at this you either have to be fairly knowledgeable about the game, or be willing to reroll numerous times. There are people who have been trying to no reload the BG trilogy for months and months. Many try but few succeed. Thats what makes it a challenge.

Not a biggie, the mage origin is a cakewalk once you get to know it. Just did a fresh install of both the OS and DAO. Testing, sorts of. Looks like DirectX 11 at least with nVidia 9600/1 GB doesn't work as well as DirectX 9c on WinXP.

Speaking of: Why did you use an old unlocked specification such as duelist? It's possible to pay a quick visit in Denerim right after Lorhering. Of course there are dangers on the road...

When I re-installed and downloaded the DLC, my old "achievements" and unlocked abilities appeared in the fresh install. I'd liked to start the game anew without any previous unlocked abilities and such. Is there a way to delete the online profile? So far I've been able to just delete some test characters.

Good luck on your new attempt Upih. I didnt even think about unlocked specializations. The spec was available so I took it. No rules about that btw. Not sure how to delete your online profile.

Well, Brogan and Lelianna made it to Redcliffe. They had to fight an emissary, a hurlock alpha, and 4 other lackeys....but fortunately, the emissary was white rather than yellow, and went down fast due to our focussed fire. No traps. We had to chug a couple of health potions, but nothing too drastic.

After the Redcliffe village battle, both Lelianna and Brogan attained level 8, and Brogan chose combat stealth for his talent. Now I am not so worried about the random encounters. Heading into the castle now.

Redcliffe castle was a bit more difficult than I remembered. I killed Jowan upon entering the basement and had planned to kill off Conner, but by the time I fought my way to him, I had exhausted my supply of health potions and elf root. At that point I realized that there was no way to beat the Demon without dying, so I changed my mind and agreed to help the little tyke out by seeking the help of a mage.

I then headed to Honnaleath to revive Shale and get the Harvest Ring and Helm. This was fairly easy.

Next up, I will head to Ozzamar to do some of the introductory quests there. My plan is to side with Bhelen initially, so that I can get access to the Palace (for Crows quests), as well as Red Jenny Seekers (Carta quest) and then double cross my scumbag younger brother when it comes time for the assembly. I know Bhelen may be the better ruler, but I have a personal vendetta with him, and he must die.

It's a Mass Effect reference.

Well, Brogan met his demise at the hands of Lelianna's assassins. He had forgotten about this encounter, and when it occured, he tried to sneak around to get at the head assassin. But he got caught by a fireball trap, which his trapping skills were not high enough to see. Although he ran around chugging potions, and tried to re-stealth twice, the lightning zaps and fireballs kept coming, and he was unable to get another combat stealth off. A war dog then overwhelmed him and it was curtains. Next time around I will make sure to pump my mechanical device skills early.

I didnt really expect to be successful on my first attempt....and maybe not even my tenth attempt. Anyway, I will be rerolling Brogan tommorrow. I am finding this quite a bit of fun, due to the extreme caution and danger involved. Hardcore (no death) gameplay requires a whole different mind set, and gets the adrenaline pumping. Ive been addicted to this type of gameplay since my old hardcore Diablo 2 days. The key is a serious penalty for death--and trust me, losing 10-15 hours of character investment is a definite penalty.

IMO, a no-reload in Dragon Age is much more serious business than a no reload in the Baldur's Gate series, especially with a minimal party. Solo Nightmare no reload would simply be insane.

Well, obviously, hence the "Mass will have an effect" -type reference. The rest appears as gibberish at least for silly me. I meant, is there some kind of a hidden contest on how many times you have to load/start/restart the game before getting to the Deep Roads. I did the Dead Trenches without reloading, still got the same codex.

Heck, I've got reload Dead Trenches because in some instances I haven't got the journal update on Hespith's ramblings. No idea, as to whether that has any effect on anything, but...

Do everyone get that same "Mass will have an effect" entry? E.g in some of my playthroughs, I've got the doggie to fetch either "Letter to Someone in Highever" or "Tattered Notebook" in the Lake Calenhad Docks. Does that depend on your cunning or whatsoever?

Is the trap even disarmable? In my playthroughs, I've simply made my way around it since no handle was to be seen, only a "Tripwire" tag. Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT/ driver 196.21 here.

Yup, you have to be really careful and probably make a storyline you'd not like on a regular basis.

Ooooo.

I'm going to up the difficulty of a previous normal game ( currently about to attempt the CE Origin Castle Fight, just finished talking to Duncan ) to Hard ( playing a first time Rogue, Nightmare is a bit to uh, Nightmarish right now, at least until I learn the class ), is this acceptable?

If it is, I will be going in with my new CE Rogue

Mods - Sten 2 Spec, Dog pet ( if needbe, I can remove it, but I've never found this mod to be overpowering before ), Lock Bash, and respec mod.

DLC - All.

Eventual Hope is to become a Assassin....something, we will see how that goes, I have all Rogue specs unlocked but Ranger oddly enough o.O

Don't update your drivers for awhile, just fyi.

The next step up has been shutting down GPU fans, and killing PCs.

Welcome aboard Default. Your game plan sounds fine. Good luck.

Rerolling Brogan. Dwarven Noble

Nightmare difficulty, official DLCs, except RtO, version 1.02a.

Duelist/Assassin Rogue dex rogue with a few arrow talents and master stealth. Lots of traps, bombs, and poisons. Lelianna will be my duo sidekick. Other NPC party members where forced. I am installing the mod where your party members have all points unassigned when you pick them up.

I learned a few things on my first attempt, which I will try to avoid on my second. The Dwarven Noble origin is just too good to pass up. First, this origin gets 10% spell resistance right off the bat. Second, with the right dialogue choices, and Warden Keep DLC, one can have over 100g by the time you hit Ostragar. Spell resistance gear is top priority. Crushing prison in certain boss fights (Uldred, Fade Demon) is a game ender. High dex can take care of most everything else. Once I get the sequence of quests, gear acquisition down, I think a solo Nightmare no reload should be possible.

Some people might think this type of game play is tedious. But for me its a challenge and an exciting one. Without a tank, mage, or healer in the party a single mistake can be ruinous.

Alright, I want to join this one. It only took me 5 tries before I completed the BG no reload challenge. Let's see if we can't beat this.

Eoin Cousland, a human noble rogue. DW cunning rogue, planned assassin/duelist. I'm going to do this on normal difficulty with a 4 person (though I think I'll go no healer) party to start. If it's too easy, I'll duo it with Zevran. I'm using all official DLCs and I'm on the 360, so no patches for me. :(

Eoin just lost his family in the opening origin. I love the HN story, and I love playing rogues, so this should keep the challenge fresh for me even if I end up having to reroll. My planned party post-Ostagar is going to be me, Zev, Alistair, and Shale. I want to give myself a little challenge by not using a healer or mage. Al has good anti-magic options and Shale can switch between melee and ranged in a pinch. I'll keep you guys posted.

Finished with Ostagar picked up Morrigan and now i am in Lothering.

So far it’s been very easy with my dex rogue but things will get harder soon.

No injuries to any of my team so far. It will get a lot harder when i do Lothering and try to go to another city because of the random fights.
