Journal of Ghislain - Day 6

I decided to look for a place to hide in the Brecilian forest. It turns out there is a clan of Dalish elves here. They would have turned us away, but for Alastair blurting out that he was a Grey Warden.

It would have been better never to have come. The forest is crawling with aggressive beasts and werewolves. And trees that reach out of the ground to claw and choke with grasping roots. And demons that lay traps, so that they may feed on your soul.

I told Zathrian that I would think about helping him deal with his werewolf problem, but really I had no intention of staying. If only escaping the forest had been straightforward. I could have sworn I was going out the way I went in, but it only seems that we're now deeper in the wood.

Tonight we camp beneath a giant, towering tree -- bigger than any other by a hundred fold. There must have been an elven city here in the old days. In the morning, I plan to flee. I don't know where. Just away from these werewolves. Away from the blight. And anywhere but back to the circle tower.

Journal of Ghislain - Day 7

As I write this, I am hiding behind the trunk of an old oak, barely able to hold the pen in my shaking hand. All of my companions are dead, and the demon is coming for me. I don't know what it is, or how I woke it from its grave, but I fear it is the last mistake I will ever make. It is some kind of black knight, swinging a huge blade like a scythe. And we are going down like chaff.

Morrigan was the first to succumb. Her healing spells and potions were too little too late, and she was not fast enough to flee from his terrifying ability to pull us off of our feet from a great distance. But she bought us time to flee momentarily, regroup, and attempt to heal our terrible wounds.

The knight came for Leliana next, slicing her throat with a great swing of his blade. Her life bought us precious little time to prepare for our last chance to pull the demon down.

The knight ripped out Alastair's heart with a psychic hand, sending his limp body crashing to the dirt at my side. Dog valiantly fought until the end, but he could not stand against this supernatural force.

Whoever finds this journal, I hope you'll forgive me. In attempting to flee the Blight and find freedom and peace, I've led my companions to their deaths. I have one last spell -- one last chance. I turn, and

[You close the journal and put it back down next to the pile of bones where you found it.]

OK, that's the end of Ghislain. I guess I should not be disturbing Revenants when I'm using the mod that seriously limits my use of potions. I ran back and forth and back and forth to try and stay alive while the healing and lyrium potion cooldown time went on. In the end, the thing was just too much for me. Especially the pull ability - I could never run away effectively. That Revenanant seemed way tougher than anything I remember facing in earlier runs.

This was my first serious run with the difficulty mod that adds a 30 second global potion cooldown time for healing and mana potions. It not only lengthens potion cooldown times, but it makes enemies hit harder and resist spells more often. Yikes. Maybe I'll have to uninstall it to have a chance at this challenge, but I really like how the extended cooldown time forces me to be more creative with potions, spells, battlefield position -- and sometimes, running away.

Alas. Perhaps I'll begin again with a new persona. Anyone care to join me?

I'm entering again. I've decided this run will have a bit of humor. In honor of the World Cup, I name my next character Vuvuzela.

Vuvuzela is an elf from the Alienage in Denerim, exiled to the Chantry just after birth, as soon as his human masters realized he had the touch of magic. The Circle Tower is the only home he's ever truly known. He is timid, cautious, respects life in all of its forms, and will seek to find peaceful resolutions to his trials wherever possible. But when provoked, his battle cry is the sound of a million angry wasps.

I'm following the same voluntary rules as last time:

1) No injuries. A character dies in battle, they remain dead and shall be removed. (Exception: Wynne. And if this somehow happens because of some scripted event in the game, that does not count.)

2) Nightmare difficulty + simple difficulty increase mod with 30 second global potion cooldowns. Dog can be the 5th party member. I can set all characters stats manually.

3) If I make it far enough, the challenge will be on-sight.

How long will Vuvuzela last before his braying cries are silenced forever?

The life of Vuvuzela: Day 1

Duncan: "Vuvuzela. Interesting name. What does it mean?"

Me: "My parents named me for the great battlefield horn of the elven people. They were common before our fall."

Duncan: "What does one sound like?"

Me: "I don't know. I was born in the Denerim Alienage, and was brought to the Circle Tower just after I was born. I've never heard one played."

Day 2, daytime:

Jory: "Daveth, look out! The demon is breathing fire!"
Daveth:  "Unghhh...."
Me: "Jory, his burns are too severe. I cannot heal him. I'm sorry."

Day 2, evening:

Duncan: "Jory, Vuvuzela. You are not volunteers. Fate may decree that you pay your price now."
Me: "You mean the Joining could kill us?
Duncan: "Yes. Now it is time for you to submit yourselves to the taint."
Me: "You are just as cruel as the First Enchanter. He used an initiate -- and used me -- to improve his position against the Templars, like it was some kind of game. What game are you playing? It is sick and I don't want to play."
Duncan: "Sick or no, you are called upon to drink. Drink -- and perhaps you will die. Refuse to participate, and I will kill you. Your choice."
Me: "That's not a choice. Give me the chalice."

Day 2, night:

Alastair: "Soldier, duck! That Hurlock's swinging for your head!!"
Soldier: "Ughhhh..."
Me: "I can't heal that."
Alastair: "Damn. We still have a long way to go to get to the top of this tower."

Day 2, later that night:

Alastair: "The ogre's got me!!  Help!!"
Me: "I'm trying!"
Alastair: "Argghhh!!"
Crossbowman: "That had to hurt. I don't think he made it."
Me: "This just keeps getting worse. Bloody hell."

Eh, why not. I'll give it a shot.

Dwarf Commoner Warrior (Dual-Weapon). Respec Mod, all official DLC, Advanced Tactics mod, permanent Dog slot, several model tweak mods, no other game mechanic alterations.

Emlin Brosca, youngest child of a casteless drunken woman. Cute, but not pretty enough for local crime lord Beraht to bother wasting coin to train the piece of trash up like her sister. Some talent with a blade though. She's a barely educated duster, but fairly quick-witted. Willing to do what is necessary to survive, yet oddly softhearted. Family's important, if it's a threat to her sister, or even her mother, it's time is short. She refuses to kill if she deems it unnecessary, though if she does, she's ruthless in execution.

The Proving was a total spectacle, a casteless woman beating fully trained and experienced Warrior Castes? Completely fair too? Then there was the bloody path she cut through the carta, including Beraht. Best send the.... woman... off with the Grey Warden, casteless duster won't last a week on the surface, let alone against darkspawn.

---

Ostagar, Duncan says it's something called 'fall' and that's why it's so bloody cold. Said 'winter' would be even worse. Ancestors! How do these humans manage it? Who'd'a imagined it, me, a casteless duster meting the human king, friendly sort. Rica would like him. Hope her noble is treating her right or exile or no, I'm knifing his arse.

Humans, humans everywhere and not a sneer in sight. In the past hour I've been welcomed and greeted and smiled at more then my whole life. That merchant was right, why do the casteless stay in Orzzamarr? These... Kocari Wilds... weird place. Grass and wood and water, footing is off a bit, gunna keep to the bow unless the darkspawn get close. Speaking of, these are the terrible force that the warriors boast over the beating of a single one? The carta put up more of a fight. Well, except for that one that did magic. Huh, so that's magic. Got the treaties from the girl, Morrigan, and her mother. Got the impression Flemeth wasn't all there. Like the lyrium-addled I saw a few times.

Owww... my head... Haven't had a hangover this bad since the night Leske and I tried to have a tumble. Other two didn't make it, one from the blood, the other from a blade. Duncan didn't say anything about that whole 'join or die' bit in his recruitment spiel. Bah, not matter, more important things to worry about. Like getting a tankard of water. Bloody human meetings.

---

Well... I'm guessing this wasn't part of that plan. Maybe I should've paid more attention after all. Darkspawn got into the tower of Ishtal before the horde arrived. Wonder why? No matter, can't ask the dead questions. Lots of them in the tower now. Those mabari dogs are quite useful, lots of darkspawn there. This mage fellow isn't bad either.

Sodding Ancestors! That thing is huge! How did it even bloody /get/ up here? Oh well, it's not getting back down, not with those cut hamstrings. Or Ally-boy's sword in it's head. Looked like it hurt. That other human with the crossbow didn't make it. Ok, beacon now... wait... did you guys hear something from the stairs?

---

Bloody hell. So much for Cailin's plan. Poor bugger. Just Alistair and me now. This just keeps getting better. Ending the whole Blight is up to me and Ally-boy? Oh... and Morrigan. Ok, that's a bit better... still. Bloody hell.

Wonder if Leske would mind that I named my new dog after him? Probably best I'm not gunna meet him again.

Lothering, might as well just call it Loathed. Fits too, this place sucks. Mood around the place reminds me of Dust Town. Probably the refugees, nothing quite like the spirits of the emotionally broken to pull down the air of a place. Wait.. when did /I/ become the leader? Did you two vote behind my back? Sodding humans...

Well, at least some things are familiar. Being blamed for something without anyone asking, or interested in, proof otherwise. Red wasn't bad, kinda reminds me of Rica, except human. And one hell of a shot with a bow. Morrigan doesn't seem pleased with her. Oh well, not my problem as long as they don't try and fight until we find a place to camp for the night.

What's with all the sodding tall people? Everyone has to be taller then the last! Bloody qunari's tallest I've seen aside from that ogre. Talks only a little bit more too. I've had enough of this place. Can't take five steps without someone trying to attack me. Time to leave people.

Continueing the trek of Emlin Brosca...

---

How in the Ancestors do humans find anything on the surface? Alistair and Leliana are trying to teach me how to navigate with surfacer maps and this bloody human writing with... limited success. Morrigan's having the time of her life apparently, laughing at either their attempts of my efforts. Likely both. I had meant to take us to a place called Redcliff, Ally-boy said that's were this arl Eamon lives. So I messed up, path looks all the same on this sodding map. Ah well, we had to got to the Circle anyways.

Looks like things aren't going to well here either. Lovely. If we want any help from this stupid tower, it looks like I have to get their mess cleaned up. Oh, hey Wynne, nice to see you survived. Okay, bodies that blow up, 'things' made of fire, mages throwing spells at us, mentally addled heavily armored soldiers, sodding undead and... wow she's not wearing a lot. Why am I here again, wait Duncan... aren't you supposed to be dead? Ugh, and now I'm in this place called the Fade according to Niall, I was under the impression dwarfs couldn't come here. Place ain't right, if this is surfacer magic, they can sodding well keep it. I just want out and I'm more then willing to cut off the heads of as many demons and psychotic humans I need to in order to do it.

(Technically my only reload happened here when the computer decided I needed to see this new window in the middle of a fight with an arcane horror before I could turn off burning man form)

Right, now that that's settled. On to the next floor. Ohhhh! That Uldred! From the meeting where he and that old human woman argued! Nice to know, now die.

o.O!!!

Sodding big. Why the sodding Stone does everyone have to be so sodding big? I swear it's like the taller they are, they more insane they get. Heard something about the air in really high places being thin or something, must be like that.

---

Ok, Wynne's taken over my tutoring now, on to Redcli... wait... I know that human, he was at Ostagar. Documents? But what about... oh come on Alistair, don't look at me like that. Enough with the nug eyes... Geh! Not you too Wynne! But... but it's cold there! White stuff was coming from the sky as we were leaving!

...

Sodding humans. This 'snow' stuff sucks. Like sand, but colder. Much colder. Only good point was that attack by that elf. He's kind of amusing. Casteless as well, or something like that. Then there was that siege door Alistair dropped on me. He called me pretty. No one's called me that but Rica. He means it too, he couldn't lie to save our lives... 'M not sure if I'm considering it because he's the first guy to not see just me brand or what... Argh! To much deep thinking, need to stab darkspawn, that'll make me feel better.

So. This is a human funeral. Didn't know Cailan but he deserved better then what the Darkspawn did.

---

What am I doing here? What the bloody, sodding Stone of the Ancestors am I doing here? The bloody gates of Orzammar. I know what's on the other side, I know how they're going to treat me. Warden or no, I'm just... just a bloody brand. This is a mistake. Bloody Stone.

I'm an aunt. Rica has a son. I'm an aunt. It's Prince Bhelen's. I'm a sodding aunt! Ok, focus, need to end Blight. One casteless dwarf needs to end the Blight. Bhelen says he'll help if I can assit in securing the throne for him. Bloody politics. Still, it's another chance to cut a swath in the carta, and put Jarvia down like the rabid deepstalker she is. I'm so in.

Leske you utter fool. You weak-willed, sodding duster, you made me do it. Ancestors, I know this was going to be a bad idea. At least I know Rica's happy. Now... to find me a Paragon.

Day 3:

Flemeth: "You're going with him, girl."
Morrigan: "What?"
Me: "Two mages against an entire Blight? You've got to be joking."

---

Dog: "Woof!"
Me: "OK, two mages and a dog. This is still sheer lunacy."

Day 4:

Inkeep: "The furniture is on fire. Why couldn't you have taken your dispute outside??!!"
Me: "Sorry. I've had this problem since I was a child."

---

Leliana: ".. The Maker told me to."
Me:
"Let me get this straight. Your human god told you to find me and follow me, no matter where I'm going?"
Leliana: "You're doing the Maker's work."
Me: "Not if I have any say in the matter. I want to go find my people, and learn something of where I came from. The blight is far too large for one man to deal with. You all can come along if you like, but don't expect to find any glory."
Sten: "Why are we standing around? There are darkspawn to be fought."
Me: "Aren't you listening? I'm going to let someone else deal with the blight! No one ever asked me if I wanted to be the last Grey Warden!"

Day 5

Alastair's ghost appears to be hanging around camp. He's figured prominently in a few very disturbing dreams. No matter. We're going to the Brecilian forest.

Day 6

Me: "You may call me Vuvuzela."
Zathrian: "Who named you that?"
Me: "My parents. They were slaves in the Denerim Alienage. That's all I know about them. In fact, the only elves I've ever known have been apprentices or mages of the Circle."
Zathrian: "How fitting. Named after the glorious battlefield horn of our ancient ancestors. It is said that one horn could drone out all sounds for miles around, hampering communication and demoralizing any who would attack us."
Me: "Do you have one? I'd love to hear a blast."
Zathrian: "No one has heard a Vuvuzela in centuries, since before the Tevinter Imperium. But if you help us with our Werewolf problem, I will ask Master Varathorn to try and recreate one from a piece of Ironwood using the lore I have collected over the years."
Me: "That would be thrilling -- but the task sounds dangerous. If the threat is too great, I may retreat. But the thought of hearing the great horn... I will make the attempt."
Zathrian: "Good luck."

Day 7

Morrigan: "What are we doing in this depressing old ruin again?"
Me: "Trying to help my people by seeking out this Witherfang."
Morrigan: "Your people? You have none. Taken from slavery into imprisonment in the Circle -- you do not belong to the mages, nor to the dalish, nor to the city elves. I think we are here to indulge your vain nature, to help you find somewhere you can call home. Well, too bad. Zathrian is just using you.
Me: "Ouch, Morrigan. You don't have to be here, you know."
Leliana (scouting): "A Dragon!!! Get ready!"

[The dragon runs up the stairs, overwhelms Morrigan and kills her. The others hack it down, but too late.]

Morrigan:
"Not like this...."

Sten: "Her gods have taken her."
Me: "Forgive me, Morrigan."
Sten: "Let's keep going. I can find my atonement in this dank cavern as well as anywhere."
Me: "This could be going better. But I suppose we can only move on."

Day 7, later on

Sten: I think my atonement is in that phylactery. Let's break it.
Me: Umm... that sounds like a really bad idea. Lets not and say we did.

---

Leliana (scouting):
That room is filled with fire traps. I stepped on one and it nearly killed me. But we have to go through there to get to the lair.
Me: Can't you disarm them?
Leliana: Nope. Sten?
Sten: Sounds like atonement to me.

[Sten marches into the room and dies horribly in the flames.]

Me: This could be going better. Goodbye Sten.
Well, Dog, Leliana -- maybe there's another way into the lair. Let's go back and look at that fountain.

---

Shade: [Shouting somethin in ancient elven.]
Me: What does a Vuvuzela sound like?? Tell me please.
Shade: [More indecipherable elven.]

[More shades rise. The party flees.]

Leliana: We have to turn and fight. We have no chance, otherwise.
Me: Not fair. The shades seem to resist fire!!
Dog: Woof!
Leliana: We need Sten and Morrigan...
Me: I think we will be meeting them all too soon.

[The End.]

I'm entering again. Parandroid, you should enter too!

But I need to tone back the difficulty, I think. That was brutal. I'm going to try a run adding the advanced tactics scripting mod, keeping the simple difficulty mod (longer potion cooldown times), but dropping the difficulty down from nightmare to hard. It will still be more challenging than nightmare in the vanilla game -- enemies will still hit harder and resist spells more often. First post to come later.

Running Emlin on Normal. I've only beaten the game once before period. And that was with a lot of my Dalish Rogue Warden dropping, a lot. And that was on Normal too. Any higher and I'm almost certain that I would've ended in the Fade. I'm 'allowing' companions to return if I have Wynne revive them. Actually needed that three times, all in the Deep Roads. Except myself per the rules of the challenge.

---

So... these are the infamous Deep Roads. And I have a drunken, disgraced Warrior Caste following me around. Day's just getting better and better. Ain't too sure about Bhalen's professed innocence, but with Harrowmont's goons attacking me left and right, I'd frankly rather be shot of them all. Rica and little Endrin are the sole reason I'm helping, Blight or no. Bloody nobles and their bloody politics, give me darkspawn anyday.

My dog's trying to kill me. Leske's acting through Leske. That's the only explanation. I have no idea where he got that glass phile. Wynne said it looked like a phylactery. And then that fool hound bit through it. That demon knight undead thingie was a bronto and a half to take down. Oghren actually pulled his weight in that fight, will wonders never cease? At least we found where Ortan tiage is, or what's left of it anyways.

Found the ruins of their Shaperate with records of births for that wants-to-be noble Orta. Also found a deranged Smith caste. I wouldn't be lying to Filda, he son did die out here, that poor sod isn't him. Hasn't been for a while. Also found a huge sodding demon. Again! If it wasn't for Wynne, I'd think I might agree with Sten's people's idea of mages. Kill them at birth. Didn't have a clue what it was saying, sounded threatening, I know threatening. Ha, I win, well, I suppose Leliana wins. That was a heck of a shot.

After this place, I think I just might have a new hatred for spiders. Ain't right, they're bigger then me too!

Ancestors sodding knickers! That's the Archdemon?! I'm expected to fight that?! Saw it in my dreams but to see it in person.... Still, think rather fight that then go back to Orzammar. Sad, isn't it? Sodding Dwarfs. Oh, Legionaries! I've heard of them they... Hey, Ohgren, Leske! What are... YOU'RE STROMING THE BRIDGE?!?! Aaaghhhh, c'mon girls let's try and reign the fools in. Bloody men.

Now Ohgren, what have we learned about trying to take on more darkspawn then you have fingers? No, I'm not going to let Wynne heal your hangover. It wasn't ale, it was the bronto that ran you over. Literally. Sodding drunk, quite whining, you dragged my dog with you, I don't want to hear it. He's not complaining. On your feet, let's get moving.

...To quote Alistair. Right. Very creepy. Was Hespith like that before your wife started having an affair with her and left you behind, or is this new? C'mon, let's find her, she's our only lead to the bloody Para-sodding-gon. Ogres, I'm really getting annoyed with all these things bigger then me trying to Bloody EAT ME! No Wynne, I'm not possessed by a rage demon, I'm just really, really, really sodding tired of being mistaken as a nug stake.

Oh gross, that's what they want females for? Ugh, pass, thanks. In fact, let me make sure you know it. Nothing says 'remember this' like a longsword in the skull. Now then Ohgren, psycho rhymer said your wife... allowed this to be done to her clan. Her family. I have issues with her. Just letting you know.

What a charming, sodding, woman you married, you drunk. So charming she's trapped us in a maze filled with death traps and darkspawn and angry ancestor spirits. I have more issues with her.

Caridan? You're a dwarf. And you're bigger then me now too. That's it, the Ancestors really do hate me. Branka! You're not hiding behind hammered sheets of iron! The Ancestors love me! What... oh yeah, golems from dwarfs bad, right, let me at that sodding woman!!

Okay, not quite how it was planned, but I got a Paragon's approval for the next king. Not that either of them cared who. A casteless choosing the next king of Orzammar, oh the irony. Right, have Bhalen's word on the forces against the Blight, Rica's happy and I'm shot of this bloody place.

---

Redcliff? When'd we get here? Yes, I was just following Alistair. After what he did to me last night, I'm surprised I'm walking at all. This case, I think I like being a snack for someone bigger then me. Oh don't blush Ally-boy, you enjoyed it too. Now what's with the nervous look? Well what do you know, I guess this makes me a noble hunter. Hated those women. Well, let's go my Prince. Yes, yes you are going to regret that. He he!

Troubles in Redcliff. Why am I not surprised? Okay, let's get set people. If there's anything a Duster knows, it's know to set up for a loosing battle. Kicked the drunk in the pants. The human one, not Ohgren, might do that later though. Rolled up several barrels of very flammable oil to up the sodding hill. Convinced the stupid human chanter woman to play nice with her defenders. Bloody religious folk, always in a hurry to die. Ah... 'convinced' Dwyn, that fat Llyod and the elf spy to fight. The qunari looming behind my back probably helped. Time to wait.

After all the build up the humans made, that was it? Nobody even died! Well, no one that wasn't already dead. And wasn't invading. Oh, swag! Nice helmet Teagan, wonder how much I can hock it for? Hmm... What? Right, right... windmill, rendezvous, tryst got'chya. ... Wait, what?

My next character will again be a mage.  Same rules as mentioned in my posts above, with the extended potion cooldown times mod, but hard difficulty instead of nightmare. Maybe I'll last a bit longer before meeting a tragic end... or maybe not. Here's his intro:

===

First Enchanter's Journal

I'm concerned about the child Gregoir brought back this morning. A human boy called Delos. He was apparently raised by brigands, who tattooed his face with black circles around his eyes and multiple stacked eyebrows. I've never seen a human child look so ... unnerving. But he does have the gift. Hopefully we will be able to socialize him into the culture of the Circle.

[... many years later ...]

I am sending Delos to his Harrowing tomorrow. I never thought he would make it to this point, after those first few terror-filled years. Blazes in the apprentice quarters. Tattoing the Tranquil with needle and ink while they slept. Glyphs of repulsion in the privy. But he has grown into a mature, responsible senior apprentice. And I cannot doubt his ability. He is one of the most brilliant students I have ever taught. He might one day outshine us all. But despite his exemplary behavior for the past decade, I can't shake the suspicion that he has some larger agenda in play. He's a lot like Uldred in that way. I suppose it could be much worse. Onward.

Lilandra, keep up the good work. You're faring better than any of my runs. And the color you're putting into Emlin's tale.... I love it. Any close calls so far?

=== The story of Delos ===

Jowan knows blood magic. I can tell. He's a poor liar. Although, he has managed to trap that initiate Lily in his scheme to escape. It is almost audacious enough to work. Except for his mistake of involving me. Maybe I would have helped him for an appropriate reward -- such as an initiation into the underbelly of this rotten Circle -- but he offers nothing of value to me. So I will rat him out to the First Enchanter. And maybe I'll get to spring the trap myself. I've always wondered what treasures await in the lower stores of the Tower.
....

Jowan did know blood magic, and he used it to escape. The first enchanter rewarded my service by allowing me to travel with this foppish Grey Warden to Ostagar, where Uldred is. Perhaps now that I am a full mage, Uldred will initiate me into his secret activities. He can try to hide, but I know what he's up to. Its only a matter of time before I acquire that power, and put it to use.
...

Daveth was only useful to steal things from the quartermaster. And Jory was a sniveling fool, afraid of an uncertain fate in the Joining more than the certain death of the blade. I won't miss them. Still, Duncan will pay for what he did. Not to them, but to me. Giving me no choice but to drink that vile, bloody brew. No one deceives me more than once.
...

Seven acid grenades, and the Ogre was still standing. I'm eager to learn the secrets of the archdemon, or whatever magic creates these beasts. Having one at my command could be useful. When it grabbed Alastair, I was sure it would crush the last inch of life from his body. Somehow, the fool Templar held on to his last breath, and I was able to patch him up. The other soldier wasn't so lucky, taking a giant heel to the head.

What's that noise from the stairs?

It looks like the darkspawn got to Duncan before I could take my revenge. The King, too. I'll have to remember how dangerous these fiends can be. I wonder how they are commanded? I would be food for crows as well, were it not for Flemeth. I can only wish that I had been raised by this majestic creature out here in the wilds, rather than having to tolerate the sniveling fools in the Circle Tower. Now here is a mage worthy of my time! Perhaps she will teach me a secret or two if I take good care of her daughter...
...

A dog has invaded our company. I can't seem to get rid of it. It seems to think I had something to do with saving it from death by darkspawn blood. It better not get in my way.
...

Lothering is full of fools and beggars. It's past time to get out of here. More taggers-along have appeared, however. This giant qunari, Sten, wouldn't get out of his cage. I tried to set him free, but he said "I would only be trading this small prison for a larger one." Telling him that I was a grey warden pledged to fight the blight was enough to motivate him to action, however. Even if that's not actually what I plan to do. Maybe I can find some use for him.

But this bard, Leliana. There's a dilemma. I don't think she will be of much help in my plans, as she has this sickening fixation on the Maker. No matter how often I tell her that her faith is misplaced (in me as a Warden and in the Maker in general), she seems to think that a higher power instructed her to follow me. Alas. Perhaps she can unlock a few doors for me before I have to abandon her. She'll be lucky if she doesn't shortly end up in a shallow grave.

Alastair suggests we go to Redcliffe, to seek help from the Arl. Good enough, I say. Maybe I can acquire a few riches from the treasury while I'm there. To accomplish my plan, I will need financing...

Took a day off from Emlin's tale to run Leliana's Song DLC.

So far the closest Emlin's come is the saving the refugees Chantry Board mission. I always loose most of the refugees on my other Wardens' tries, so this time I sent Emlin right to the Emissary to work him over. Got most of that block of darkspawn agroed on her doing it. Used two health potions in very quick succession before Wynne got close to heal and Alistair to pull them off me. Got pretty worried for a bit. But I managed to keep all six refugees alive. ^.^!

The Ishtal ogre was also rather close. He tossed a rock first thing before I could spread the party and closed in before most of them got back to their feet. That was when the crossbowman died after getting grabbed. Thankfully, the mage's paralyze hit shortly after and it was all down hill from there. (for the ogre)

Delos is looking to be a right bas***d. And not in Alistair's way. Too bad there wasn't an ending where you could side with the Archdemon. :P Though I'm guessing you're going to let Al or Lo 'take one for the team'.

Thank you for the optimisim that I'll make it to the end of the game, Liliandra. (I personally think the odds of premature tragedy are incalculably high.) But who knows what Delos will do? I sure don't. (Especially since I've never made it past about the 30 percent mark of the game.) You can only be sure that he'll always look out for himself.

===continued===

I wish I could have captured the look on Bann Teagan's face when I denied his request for help. Why should I care if walking nightmares clean this place out? The only problem is, I want to get into that castle. Even more so since the Smith told me that he'd overheard that the Arlessa was having an affair with a blood mage. There's certainly riches in that castle. Maybe power as well. I suppose that fop Teagan will have my spells tonight. But only if he gives me what I want. Maybe the battle will have a silver lining... maybe Leliana will have an accident, and I won't have to hear about the Maker anymore. One can only hope.
...

Walking corpses fall without too much effort. So do knights and the village militia. I suppose I was a little careless in aiming my fireballs. Alas, Teagan, that so many died. Now will you show me how to get inside that castle?

Well, if you expect defeat you'll rarely be disappointed. Though I'm pretty sure psychology doesn't work well on video games, it certainly couldn't hurt. :P

======

Mean human, teasing a distracted girl like that. Still a good plan though perhaps... what are you pointing at? So... this is the woman who made my Ally-boy's home not so and then got him sent away? Bint still doesn't like him either I see. She's also hiding something. Bah, Ancestors save me from all-to-noble hot men. C'mon guys, into the tunnel, best hurry before Teagan does something stupid to save that bint.

A Blood Mage? Kinda like wassis-name? Uldred? He better not grow into a twenty-foot tall demon. Think I'll leave him in that small cell in case he does. Oh, what, a, surprise. Dead things walking. Oh, and demony things too. These things from the Fade don't have much imagination. Say, isn't that like that knight thingie from the Deep Roads? Odd, seemed weaker then the last one.

This Conner kid, or the demon in him, is annoying me. Bint practically gave Teagan to him. Fool woman doesn't seem to quite grasp that everything that's happened in Redcliff is practically her fault. She went to Loghain for an apostate to train the brat, and Jowan poisoned Eamon on Loghain's order. Kid drew a demon and made a poor deal to I guess keep Eamon alive and let it loose in the castle, then when it got board, it marched the dead to the village. All because this stupid bint and her prejudice against mages. Ancestors! I'm so tempted to let Jowan use her life to end this. If it wasn't also blindingly obvious that she loves her son so sodding much I would. Time to get the professionals involved. Okay, so... what... we just wait here for Wynne to do her thing? Well at least it's better then the last time we were involved with the Fade. Hey Alistair, sit over here, I have an idea on what to do while waiting...

---

Some human came into the camp last night, said he'd been trying to find me for months. Levi, he called himself. Something about a promise Duncan made to him about some fortress and his family. Bloody buttons. I swear there's someone just out of my sight telling everyone what they need to say to get me to help them. Off to the mountains and snow. Again.

Well, this is interesting. Guess we're not the first Wardens to oppose the rulers of the land. Good point, don't get caught in an inescapable position. Starving to death is never fun. Walking dead and demons. Again. I'm not quite as pissed about them as I was about those bloody spiders, but they're getting tiresome. Wait... they started the rebellion? Something about this isn't right. Yikes! That's Levi's Ancestor? This isn't right, Ancestor's aren't supposed to keep moving unless they're Paragons. Not sure even then, last two I met weren't contributing much to the betterment of dwarfkind.

Blood magic seems surprisingly versatile. If you don't turn into a hulking sodding demon or get stupid, you can live a bloody long time. Still, what he did is little better then what Branka did to her House. And just as unforgivable. Stabbing time. He makes a terrible ale too, what Red? Alchem-what? It wasn't ale?

...

Sod.

---

Morrigan pulled me aside while we were heading to Denerim to look into this Urn thing. She told me about what she found from her mother's book. Though... I guess 'mother' doesn't really count. How could anyone do that to someone they raised? Even my own mother wouldn't. I think, not if she was sober anyways. Though that's not often. Still not sure about her plan, but... I can't argue with her logic.

Human cities are... messy. Poorly planned to. I guess that's an... ah... advantage of not being constrained by solid walls and lava rivers. Found Alistair's sister. Supposed sister. Poor guy, I can't imagine what I would do if Rica treated me like that. Wait, yes I can. It would involve a lot of bleeding and broken bodies. Kind of like Red's old friend. Wait... lover? But they're both women.. right? How... so that time she was flirting with me? She thought...?

...

Ewww. I like you Red, but not like that. Just... ew. Oh, don't let me stop you from... ah.. indulging in any other girls who are open to it... but just... I mean... shutting up now.

Well the deed is done. Flemeth is dead. Put up a hell of a fight though. All lyrium-addled that tough? I'm not going to mess with Sandel, just in case. Now to limp off to this 'Haven' place.

Blind Visionary, your additional rule of leaving fallen party members "dead" is going to make things much harder for you. Even ina no-reload run in BG2, you could always revive the fallen.

It's consistent, though, else only the Warden is not revivable.  And Wynne gets an exception courtesy her friendly spirit.  I remember a game years ago with the colorful title "Dungeon Hack" that had a dead-is-dead option.  If you died, the game automatically deleted your character.  It did make one pay attention.  And in DA:O there could be the added concern for the welfare of your love interest.  The temptation is growing to try this...

I've played similar games. The original challenge, though, was set according the BG2 no-reload challenge, and, for plot reasons, the main character couldn't be revived. I suppose "dead is dead" is consistent, but ignoring injuries to everyone would be, too. As long as you're just adding new rules, why not say "no potions" or "no pausing"? My point is, at this point it's just adding an arbitrary additional challenge. Of course, it's all voluntary.

Yes, it's arbitrarily redefining the moment of death. Giving it some more thought, I think I will allow falling to the Tower ogre. As long as someone kills it, Flemeth shows up to rescue and heal the Wardens. And Revival is a spell specifically for reviving a just-fallen comrade, so that's in for me. It fits my sensibilties that death doesn't happen the instant of losing consciousness. I'm harkening back to an old D&D rule - unconscious at 0 hp, dead at -10 hp.
