It's a toss-up for me. They are both great.

Both. I know I didn't answer your question, and I'm sorry for that, but I really can't pick just one. I'm looking at it from a book person's perspective here, and there are so many good authors in both genres that all the cool stuff they come up with makes it impossible to choose. Mayber others will be more helpful :P.

Thats why i think this is a good thing to discuss, they have alot of simularities but are both special in there own way. And a developer like Bioware that makes Sci-fi and Fantasy i cant think of a better place to discuss it than there social network. Image IPB

Okay, I'll bite. Currently I'm coming away more impressed with certain fantasy novels, particularly in the New Weird sub-genre (think China Mieville and Jeff Vandermeer) because they're pushing things beyond the usual epic fantasy or urban fantasy that's really popular these days. Also, I think The Steel Remains is a really good example of the tried and true Sword and Sorcery genre still chugging along and being awesome. So currently, I'll side with fantasy. This isn't permanent mind you, at any moment i could switch to sci-fi. It's just that based on the new, just recently released works, fantasy has a bit of an edge with me.

I prefer sci-fi but neither one is objectively better than the other.

This picture shows why both are awesome :D But overall, I prefer the look and feel of sci-fi. Though I enjoy fantasy deeply too

Whats wrong with some mixing? Killing demons in space is always fun.

Normally I'd say fantasy, but after all those years I'm kinda tired of elves and all that stuff (G.R.R.Martin ftw though), so currently it's sci-fi as it's a bit more fresh.

If I had to be more specific, then Cyberpunk takes the cake (for me sci-fi means laser guns, spaceships, etc.). That's my most favorite genre. Shame there's so few (good) cyberpunk games.

Aye, normally I'm a fantasy fan, but traditional fantasy has gotten a bit tired, so I'm liking sci-fi a bit more. I would like to see something more unique though, another Jade Empire or something of that sort, I wouldn't classify that as traditional fantasy.

It just depends on the take and how well it's executed.

True, Cyberpunk is a nice taste of sci-fi. There is a mod for HL2 thats all cyberpunk and its an awesome sub-genre of sci-fi.

That's a beautiful picture.

As far as the choice is concerned, I really can't and would never choose one over the other. Both are great if done well: both can tell interesting stories, show awesome characters, present complex problems and let us experience amazing worlds which would never be seen otherwise.

Sci-Fi by far for me

It really depends on the medium. Literature I prefer fantasy, but movies/television I prefer sci-fi (mostly because fantasy always seems to come off cheesy and terrible in movies/television.)

I generally like both of them quite a lot and more than any other genre I could think of. Having said that, I prefer Science Fiction by far. Why? Science Fiction is generally more inspired by realism, technological advancements or science... I like this quite a lot.

I also like Science Fiction more as it generally has more advancement... with that I mean... I like how a science fiction universe changes over time. A fantasy universe does too, but mostly slower and with less radical changes.

I grew up on Sci-fi. I mean, my favorite movie when I was 3 was T2 Judgement Day, and my name was derived from Princess Leia from Star Wars. Fantasy was never as big as Sci-fi growing up.

I'm a die-hard Sci-fi kind of girl, but the genre feels stale to me. I don't know if I'm tired of the whole spaceships and lasers thing, but I don't enjoy Sci-fi as much I used to. Fantasy is intriguing for me, and if I had to choose, I'd choose Fantasy.

I still love both genres, but dark modern/urban fantasy has got to be my favorite.

How can anyone get enough of space ships? :P

I think it's all those crappy shows and movies on the Syfy channel. If I see another poorly made Stargate or Star Trek or Star Wars spinoff show I think I'll gauge my eyes out...

Those crappy low-budget shows have left a really bad taste in my mouth and tainted the Sci-fi genre for me. The only show I'm watching this year is Doctor Who.

Fair enough. I don't have Syfy... so I can't really judge that. Though I do like Stargate a lot, though Universe thus far has been quite disappointing. Never watched Doctor Who... friend of mine told me it's pretty good though.

Its a constant battlefield for the control of my mind. Sometimes there's a truce and the two of them have little Sci-Fantasy kids, but then they go back to war again.

The original SG1 was good, but Atlantis and Universe were just crappy. Syfy is teeming with low budget made-for-TV movies that I just can't watch.

I'd definitely recommend watching the new Doctor Who series.

The few that try anything different get cancelled as well. :(  I remember the Total Recall series was rather different and yet it still got cancelled, though that may be because everyone expected it to be like the film and not to be so much like an Isaac Asimov story (the parallels with I, Robot are immense, though I'm not talking about the Will Smith film there).

They're fun in the "so terrible it's funny" category, but that's about all.  I avoid Syfy since they changed their name, however.  There was nothing wrong with SciFi (and I liked the "if" commercials.)

I know! Some of my favorite shows that were actually good got canceled. Not by Syfy, but still. Firefly was so good and different, yet Fox went and canceled them. The movie continuation, Serenity, was good but I would have prefered the series.
