The few that try anything different get cancelled as well. :(  I remember the Total Recall series was rather different and yet it still got cancelled, though that may be because everyone expected it to be like the film and not to be so much like an Isaac Asimov story (the parallels with I, Robot are immense, though I'm not talking about the Will Smith film there).

I know! Some of my favorite shows that were actually good got canceled. Not by Syfy, but still. Firefly was so good and different, yet Fox went and canceled them. The movie continuation, Serenity, was good but I would have prefered the series.

Firefly, Farscape, Brimstone (wasn't sci fi but was still damn good), Alien Nation, Earth 2, the list goes on for the graveyard of good sci fi shows. :(  Hell BSG nearly got cancelled and ended after only four seasons (though by the end it had kind of lost the plot anyway, and was more of a mercy killing).

I like both sci-fi and fantasy but if I have to choose one over the other it would have to be fantasy.

In the very end, both fantasy and Sci/Fi are narrative tools. What is important is the story they narrate.

i vote Sci-Fi, it forces developers (writers w/e) to be more original, two ppl having elves is fine but some1 tries to steal a Wookie? no way, also, sci-fi can have the same crazy creatures from fantasy

it also makes them explain things more than MAGIC DID IT!

I say i respect equally both genres

Its like music if there would be only one genre ppl would be bored of it pretty much so i am sure many ppl like to listen various types of music.

As i see it we should talk here not bout which genre is better but bout problem of todays time and that is lacking of originality , of new ideas , creativity overall you see so many movies and games , books as just copys of each other they might have different characters but overall concept of the story its the same.

I respect quality and creativity above all no matter what genre it is.

For me Bioware did amazing job with ME , they made totaly unique original story unseen before .

Same with Tolkien which made standards for fantasy genre.

Andrzej Sapkowski with his unique writting on the Witcher story

Lucas for his original SW world .

Paul Verhoeven for his Robocop movie which was original and very cool idea of its time.

Alien Trilogy movie or Back to the future they where all new amazing ideas.

I cant say that for Avatar for example coz yeh that movie was amazing in effects tho story was something we seen milion of times before nothing unique.

i like sci fi better, but its a close race. they are two of my favourite genres for entertainment. though i must confess sci fi books are a little out of my league. the only one i got through was neuromancer, amazing but utterly confusing at some points.

Sci-Fi mainly because there is so much you can do with the genre especially in video games. Think BioShock series, Dead Space, and Assassin's Creed 2. But there is also television. I'm not forgetting that. You see, when it comes to stories taking out in space, let's say, there is so much to explore on each planet. It could also be that for me, the only good fantasy books I can find these days are the top top ones, such as the Wheel of Time, A Song of Ice and Fire, Harry Potter, etc. I've read other fantasy books but I feel sometimes like I'm reading the same one. At times, I just find it kind of boring. I mean, I can assure you that I've read quite a lot of fantasy books so I've seen some good ones.

Bottomline: I prefer SciFi more.

its more of a mood thing for me. Sometime im more scifi-ish and other time fantasy-ish. But like some people said, movie/tv show scifi has the upperhand while fantasy is much better than most scifi on books. As far as game goes they both stand their own and give the same amount of pleasure. But since we have to split ill choose 1 category in which to split them up. In the game category ive always been more of a fan of RPG which is most of the time fantasy. So to finish this little wall of text, Fantasy wins.

I much prefer science fiction to fantasy.

For some reason, I can not get into most fantasy stories. I think it is because to me the worlds are all generic; evles, dwarves, blah, blah. For some reason, I can not get into the motivations of the characters as much in a fantasy world either. I am aware that this may be just a bias on my part.

I did read a story sometime back about a fantasy world where wizards were information brokers and magic was used in a manner sort of like modern telecommunications. It was interesting because it addeed a new dimension to the classic sword and sorcery genre. I just wish I remembered what the name of the story was:(

I can't choose. I guess until there's a scifi on the level of LOTR, fantasy is in the lead.

It would be a hard choice for me. There are many things that I like about each of them, and it often comes down to simply what I feel like at the time - and they sometimes blur a bit. In fact, several series of books that I like a good deal tend to sit somewhere on the line between the two.
There are probably more fantasy books, games, and so forth and I enjoy than science fiction, so I suppose I'd say that.

I know this isn't the thread for it, but those who have a hard time getting into to traditional fantasy should give Jeff Vandermeer's Finch a try. It's part of that "New Weird" classification I mentioned earlier. Its got a great noir detective story tone, with freaky villains, multiple dimensions (this seems to be the thing to do these days, bring back the multiverse obsession) and a truly interesting sity that's as much a character as the people you meet (Ambergris is something else).

Won't exactly make you do a complete change of your view, but it will open your eyes to the wide variety of fantasy out there. Much in the same way that sci-fi isn't all spaceships and aliens, fantasy isn't all elves and wizards ;).

Sci-Fi or fantasy... Depends.

Sci-Fi for action, fantasy for stealth.

Would have been the other way around, but then Prototype came out.

Depends on how the story works. Personally, I like the idea of smashing the two together. Steampunk/cyberpunk or whatever kind of world that mixes some industry/technology with fantasy elements is usually interesting. Although, if I had to choose one, I'd go with Fantasy since one can get away with a lot of stuff in that field and you don't have to always be in a medieval setting with elves/dwarves.

There is a Sci-FI equivalent to LOTR.  It's The Lensman series by Edward E. Smith.

Many of the sci-fi cliches like shields, tractor beams, wormholes etc. originated in those books much in the same way fantasy cliches originated from LOTR.

As for the OP's question...

Fantasy.  Fantasy stories generally have more heart and emphasis on strong characters.

It's hard to even find that series in print. I don't think it can be compared to LOTR.

Actually it's not hard to find them at all, a search on either Barnes and Noble or Amazon will get you pretty much whatever you were looking for. They've been reprinted within the last 5 years.

The fact that the stories are being republished 60+ years after they were written should tell you that they were indeed very influential.

It really does depend. I love both of them.
I kind of agree with Vaeliorin, sci-fi makes better movies and has some(rarely) good games, which are mostly space combat sims(with the occasional RPG). Fantasy works really does work better on book and lots of great RPGs as well but has some cheesy films(with the exception of LOTR perhaps).

The only one that can be found with any ease is Triplanetary.  The others are used copies people put up on Amazon that get put up on a bunch of other sites.  I looked after I read the post to see if I could get them, and that's what I found. Hell, Borders doesn't even have Triplanetary available in their stores.  There's no guarantee you're going to be able to walk into a bookstore and find it.  It's definitely not as easy to get as LOTR, or any of Tolkien's other stories for that matter.
