My personal insane theory about Goldanna is that Goldanna wasn't a small child at the time of the Calling, but was more like 13-15 years old. That would put her at 33-35 when you meet her. Not unreasonable for a woman with five children, and she certainly doesn't look very young, but not very old either.

If Goldanna's mother is anything like her, and I don't think that's a huge crazy presumption in this game... lets say that Maric goes to Redcliffe somewhere between the end of the Calling and when Fiona shows up with ElfBaby (or vice versa would work, if Eamon brought Goldanna's mom to Denerim in that time frame). Goldanna's mom sleeps with one of Maric's entourage, because he promises her the world (that is to say, $$$$) or maybe she just prostitutes herself out to someone. Goldanna's mom gets knocked up, and claims Maric raped her and she's carrying his baby, even though it isn't true. Again presuming the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, she's trying to get someone to pay her a lot of gold to either shut up or be taken care of. No one listens to her, and presuming it even got to the point where Eamon asked Maric about it, Maric would deny her claim. Goldanna's mom still clings to her story hoping that someone will listen to her and give her what she "deserves". She then dies in childbirth along with the SoldierBaby, and they kick Goldanna out of the castle. She'd be old enough to care for herself (in that society anyway) and they very well may not have wanted to keep her around (again, presuming she's like her mother, no one wants her around to try and pull the same scheme or just cause more trouble). Now, in this scenario, Goldanna's mom would have told her that the "babe was the king's". To tell anyone otherwise, even her own daughter, undermines her story. It would explain why Goldanna believes what she does and why she's so bitter about the whole thing. She honestly believes that her mother was pregnant with Maric's child of rape, and because of it she lost everything she had.

What really irks me is that there's no indication that Fiona was a pious woman (unless I missed something, of course), so I believe that the Andraste pendant really did belong to Goldanna's mom. And yet, Eamon (I presume it was Eamon) still gave the Andraste flame amulet to Alistair. Maybe it was out of kindness, if Eamon truly didn't know the whole truth and he believed there was no harm in Alistair believing Goldanna's mother was his mother as well. It also gave credence to the cover story. Then again I always think the worst of Eamon, so maybe that's just my insanity talking again.

I do like the "Maric let Loghain fill in his own details" theory... It's not like Loghain was living at Redcliffe watching Alistair grow up, so fudging his age could have been relatively easy. And Loghain would totally be behind any plan that protected Rowan.

I can't remember if you read Freckles' fic Repercussions.  She has a nice take on the amulet i.e. that it was a plant so that Alistair could have "something" of his mother's, even though she couldn't give him anything else.

I did read that, and it was very sweet, but what she wrote goes against what I believe truly happened.  I mean, I know that City Elves follow the Maker and not the elven gods, but I just never got a very strong religious vibe from Fiona.  Again, this is just my personal interpretation of events, same as Freckles is doing.  :)

I could see Fiona wearing such an amulet if it were a personal keepsake, maybe the only thing she had from the alienage or something. I mean, people don't expect Zevran to be an Andrastian, but there are several indications that he's pious in his own way. Alistair comments that the amulet is "very old," and that there aren't many like it, which is how he recognizes it. If it were a common amulet that any Fereldan servant might wear, could he say this? To me that is a hint that it's not the sort lying around in Ferelden. Maybe a long hand-me-down in her family. The elves have an appreciation for Andraste whether they are Chantry types or not, because of Thane Shartan.
