Not a great review in Game Informer...

To paraphrase, they said the whole thing felt underdeveloped/shallow. The combat was still fun, but it didn't really evovle from any of the additions. They also said that the whole concept of you being a feudal lord of Amaranthine was shallow. There are only a handful of upgrades to make on your base, a big conspiracy to take your throne is one short sidequest, and the part where you can directly govern the region is only a single sequence, and it isn't all that special. They said a 15-hour long game wasn't enough to really delve into these concepts and that only two of the new party members were memorable.
I'm a little dissapointed.

I agree with Jhaz, the romance was very important. I just hope that you can build equally good friendships with your companions but I'm starting to doubt. Excitement is definitely decreasing a fair bit

I'm thinking it was a big mistake to leave out the "romance" portion of the game. Building relationships and friendships was what made DAO so unique. You really felt immersed in the story line. I'm definitely willing to take a chance on Awakening but I'm hoping they will see the error of their ways and bring out a 3rd round with all the elements of Origins that made the world more than the usual hack and slash...
I have to agree with you. I'm still getting awakening, but I think it's mainly due to the fact that I just finished reading the Calling not long ago.

Edit: Also I advise everyone to wait for more reviews before getting all worried. This reminds me of when the first reviews for Origins first came out and people were freaking out because it did not receive what they would call high scores. Just remember that a review is just someones opinion.

I will disagree. If the biggest problem with Awakenings is that it takes a bunch of interesting ideas and implements them in too shallow a manner, adding another element would only make the game worse.
In fact, if this review is correct, removing romances would have been the correct move.

I would be worried if it was hovering around 5-6 or so.

What is it with people and reviews nowadays. If it's not a 9+, apparently it sucks. A near 8 is still a pretty good score.

I think even a score that low wouldn't deter me. I never can put much weight into reviews.

Could you please give me a link to the review? I can't find it. Thanks.

When I heared Awakenings would be 15 hrs about, I thought to myself "this is going to probably feel rather shallow in comparison to the original" ... it's just not enough time to properly develop a story in something complex as RPGS ... it works in action games where things are more focused... but RPGs need breathing room to weave the tale.
I suspect I'll enjoy it somewhat, but it won't be an expansion as the likes of throne of bhaal for BG2.... that expansion was practically almost as long as the original game itself.
If I may be permitted to complain about 1 more thing... the previews of new skills they're showing for the classes (rogue & warrior so far) had me concerned too.... mechanics-wise they're fine.. they add something useful.... but almost all of them recycle the exact same sword-swing animation from DA... no new animations at all.... yes, they added some new particle effects... but it would be nice if the new 2-handed sword skills weren't recycled animations of the Mighty blow attack animation.
Same goes for the rogue attack skills... recycled attack animations. (The exception is rain of arrows.... kudos on that.. this is what I wanted from an expansion... a cool new skill with a brand new awesome attack animation as well).

Plus I think it's better to play the game ourselves so that we can judge how good or bad it is. This is an expansion after all. I'm guessing BioWare is just using this as "glue" for Dragon Age 2 (or whatever expansion they have in mind).

Still can't believe it's going to be $40(what I'm hearing), have the game on xbox and most other expansions packs are only $10.
Wot
Average expansion is $30, this has been how things have gone for uh, 20 years now ( OH GOD ITS BEEN 20 YEARS SINCE 1990, MY MIND IS BLOWN, I FEEL SO OLD )
As for reviews, don't honestly care, I get a keep.
Easily pleased, quite possibly, I get a keep however, and everyone who doesn't pay does not get a keep, thus I am superior in my keepbuilding ways.
TAKE THAT CHRISTOPHER WALKEN.

It's worth noting that, in mine and several other's opinions, the 'fine' people at Game Informer are simply a bunch of arrogant twits. Their articles and reviews reflect that pretty well.
This! i read their review of origins and they were just as dismissive and arrogant, whenever i read a Gameinformer review i just want to pick up a large bann hammer and gather a band of alammari barbarians so i can ravage their studio and burn their crops....oh wait thats tevinter....their pretty similar really, both oppressive groups that can't see the truth of the maker/bioware
but im getting side tracked the point is that game informer are snobs and wouldn't know taste if it hit them in the face with the force of a Typhoon, ive seen another review in gamestats that gave awakening 80 and i believe time will vindicate awakening as the great expansion it will be, have faith people! don't be like Tevinter/ Gameinformer or ill declare an exalted march on you to!!!.....as soon as i find my pillaging shorts that is.

As Karlojey said that he buys to support bioware, i do the same thing. However im expecting a baldurs gate 3 in the future, Dragon age will never be the spritual sucsessor of baldurs gate ever.
Also, as long as it doesnt end up like Empire Total war, full of bugs and gameplay issues i am content.

I didn't develop any romances my first two times through the game and I thoroughly enjoyed the story and characters.
As to the review, it doesn't change my excitement for the game. I made up my mind about Awakening a long time ago; if you've spent any time on these boards, you've already heard a thousand people say that Awakening sucks for any number of reasons (price, limited DLC item transfer, no active romances).
