Not a great review in Game Informer...

I shall now be a complete and utter dickwad.

Is anyone REALLY suprised that Game Informer gave an RPG a less then "sparkling" score?

They gave Fable 2 a 9/10.

let me repeat that.

THEY GAVE FABLE !%$#ING TWO A NINE OUT OF TEN.

hahahaha.  Game Informer sucks.

To me, what makes this review seem rather interesting is the fact that they didn't give Awakening a 9 or something ridiculously high like that. I don't know if anyone actually even notices this these days, but it's extremely rare to find any "AAA" release from a big name developer with anything below a near perfect score.

Gaming journalism being what it is, I'm guessing either EA didn't grease these guys well enough, or that Awakening really was that bad. These days, a 9/10 is usually the equivalent of a 7 or 8 (Back when reviewers actually reviewed games instead of hyping them).

So did a lot of other people.

What's your point?

That they're not very good at reviewing RPGs.

That's all.

I'm really worried about DAO:Awakening. I've already seen all promo-videos and I'm not satisfied. It looks as if there was almost nothing new in this expansion. The official site states that there are only 4 new enemies (including the Architect) and that means that we're going to fight Hurloks and Genlocks once again; it is quite shameful that BioWare didn't manage to create more new creatures - therefore it seems that fight in Awakening will be pretty much the same as in DAO.

I'm also very disappointed with the new characters - how come Velanna looks like blonde Morrigan with Dalish attire? How is it possible that there wasn't enough time to create new haircuts, staves and clothes? Morrigan was so special that I can't imagine Velanna looking exactly the same. Is that really sooooooo hard to create a new haircut and a new staff? The same with other party members - every element of their looks is derived from Origins.

"New" landscapes are also a disappointment. Kal'Hirol looks veeeeery much like any other Deep Roads location. Same buildings, same doors, same caves. It is interesting that everything made by dwarves looks so alike. Amaranthine is more or less like Denerim with some new adornments such as hanging cloths - nothing special. Those ostagar-like arches in Dragonbone Wastes made me angry. I'm happy that they are releasing an expasion pack, but I would prefer to get it really polished in July than receive some new quests and characters with almost the same landscapes and monsters in March.

Dragon Age Origins was the best game I've ever played. I really don't want to be cast down by a shallow and unpolished expansion pack that reiterates everything that appeared in the original game except the story. It's not what I expect from Bioware.

Its not thescore, its just apparently everything is shallow, and there are few upgrades to purchase, so if I hava a choice I may aswell get something that keeps me entertained longer.

No kidding. This is turning out to be a lower quality expansion plagued with DLC transfer issues and storyline inconsistencies (ultimate sacrifice anyone?).

I'm sorry Bioware, I can't support you this time, especially after supporting you by buying Warden's Keep, The Stone Prisoner, and RTO.

I hope you can get it together for the next game. (Oh yeah... how's that DLC patch coming along?)

Oh, come on, guys. If the review is negative, game informer is full of arrogant jerks?

Gotta agree with this post. Really, it seems everyone hates GI just 'cause they didn't say this game is flawless.

For one thing, I tend to like GI. This is just personal opinion, as their reviews are usually well founded, well written, well explained, etc. If they hate a game, they explain why.

But for the people that says things ike "I don't use reviews" (even though barely anyone here said that) to a working man like me, reviews are important. I don't have the cash to buy game after game, just to hope that this $50 game isn't a stinker. A review is a tool, word of mouth. Same thing as a friend with a similar taste in games. If he has one that you don't, you can ask him, and since your taste are the same, then you'd usually follow his advice.

Sorry, felt like venting for a while. With this less than amazing review, I may hold off on getting it. For the same price, I can get that DS game I wanted. Or two used games. Or a 360 controller. Or around 3 GBA games.

It seems like bioware rushed this expansion out too soon after DAO was released. They didn't spend the time necessary to make it as good as it could have been.

People are look at the score to much, there was nothing unreasonable in the review. They liked the game, but felt a lot of stuff which could have been great came off as shallow. The reviewer didn't come off as an arrogant jerk looking to fill a vendetta, they gave an opinion on a game that none of you have played so I don't understand why some of you are being so critical.

A quickie just isn't Bioware's style, they tell epic tales over lengthy adventures. The expansion had what? A ten month development cycle and a minimal budget, I wouldn't be surprised one bit if parts of Awakening feel rushed and underdeveloped.

First of all, I read that review a few times, and have discussed it with others on this forum. They said nothing about it being a bad game whatsoever. Even if you disagree with GameInformer as a whole (which I do), the score they gave the game was, by no means, a bad score, either.

Secondly, remember, contown, Bioware is not its own company. It's a subsidiary of EA, so it has to abide by the deadlines EA gives it. Which was a really short Dev time in Awakening's case.

Lastly, people place way too much faith in individual reviews. Where one magazine complains about one thing, the other will praise it.

The ONLY thing that bothers me in the review is the 15-20 hour play time. Even though I imagine I'd squeeze at least three play-throughs out of the game, it just doesn't seem worth $40. I'd rather get three play-throughs out of a 40 hour game - 120 hours is just right for a single player game I think. Still don't know if I'm going to buy it, I might not buy it just to protest the high price of a short game.

I laugh at myself because I'm actually considering which game to get first: Soul Silver or Awakening...not to mention the twenty other awesome games which are coming out this year.
