I thought I had heard, not sure where now that Grey Wardens are
sterile. I didn't give it much thought at first but now I am thinking,
that can't be right.

Otherwise how does Male Grey Warden,
Alistair, or Loghain father a child with Morrigan? (Unless that ritual
of hers specifically needs the father to be a sterile, Grey Warden)

If not where did I hear this? I though it was something Alistair said to me but can't remember.

Alistair says something along those lines. I believe it also gets mentioned in the books. The longer you are tainted the less likely you are to have children. As for the dark ritual, we have to assume that Morrigan knows what she is about, magically.

Ok so if they are sterile, how does anybody expect Alistair to continue the Theirin line? I remember Eamon going on about how a Theirin had to sit on the throne, well the line still dies with him anyway.

At least female Grey Wardens still have the option of turning into a Broodmother.

The ritual with Morrigan is magic, so however difficult it may or may not be for Alistair to reproduce, Morrigan insures it happens this once.

As for the Theirin line, Alistair himself is concerned about it continuing. He mentions that it's difficult enough for one Grey Warden to have a child and impossible for two. It's more than likely Eamon doesn't know that Alistair will have difficulty producing an heir.

Morrigan also gets pregnant with a regular baby from the male Warden, if the ritual isn't done. At least that's what I read on the forums. I've never played a MPC, mine are all women.

Please no... that thought still haunts me. Is that going to be my ultimate fate?

Honestly, I think probably not. In The Calling, Grey Wardens become tainted and slowly turn into darkspawn. There's no indication in the game that the females have been previously tainted, at least by Grey Warden means. The one example we have is a non-Warden who went through a process to become a Broodmother. It could be that that process is incompatible with the taint the Grey Wardens have.

Grey Wardens are not sterile. It's just impossible for two Grey Wardens to have a child together.

A GW can have children with a non-tainted partner, but the taint makes it a rare occurrence.

I hope not. Otherwise just chop my head off now please.

This is in an epilogue, and the child is "rumored" to be the PC's. It could have been something that happened naturally, or she still could have used some magical means to get pregnant (maybe she was doing a Dark Ritual dress rehearsal).

Book spoilers!!

Maric gets a Grey Warden pregnant at the end of The Calling. Fiona says that it is very rare for a Grey Warden to concieve, but it does happen.

Yep. They can marry, they can live happily ever, but no kids.

Edit: Ninjas!

Adoption, maybe? There should be enough Elven orphans in the Alienage after the nice humans went all pogrom on it... not to mention that way one would not risk spreading the taint to any offspring.

Gaider made it up in an earlier thread on the subject. Ser Otto is the templar in the alienage.

Ser Otto is an npc who appears late in the game before the Landsmeet. I do not want to give away spoilers even though spoilers are allowed.

That could be another reason to track Morrigan down: she knows how to insure a pregnancy. Posted Image

Well, she isn't a grey warden though. You can knock up (or be knocked up by) as many non-grey wardens as as you please. Your swimmers/eggs would just be very lazy/good at repelling invaders.

Ok. So

GW + GW = no kids.
GW + non-GW = low chance of kids (but can happen; I thought my City Elf bride-to-be was telling me it was impossible)
GW + Morrigan + Magic! = old god baby

Lore/book junkies: so is the taint heritable in any way? If a GW has a kid with a non-GW is there anything different about the kid, or is it normal?

EDIT: ongoing theory: the secret Morrigan/Flemeth agenda might be to "cure" the "taint", allowing GWs to live a normal lifespan and have children, maybe even with each other.
