Lore/book junkies: so is the taint heritable in any way? If a GW has a kid with a non-GW is there anything different about the kid, or is it normal?

Hmm, wasn't the guy from the Warden's Keep DLC the grandson of a Grey Warden commander? So I guess GW and non-GW can have normal kids (for a given value of normal ;) ).

I think it can be safely assumed that any children she had were born before Sophia took the Joining.

What I want to know is how the taint effects later in life? It'd REALLY suck for a Non-GW to see thier lover start to waste away from that disease

I assume the longer the years ago, the nastier part of the taint starts to show itself?

According to The Calling, Grey Wardens become darkspawn. Thinking, talking darkspawn, but still darkspawn.

Madness overtakes you, then you go to the deep roads and fight to the death against darkspawn, so they say.

My theory, Grey Wardens become powerful darkspawn. I think we may see something about this in Awakenings.

Really? I haven't read the Calling. Ha! My suspicion was right.

I always feel sad about the GW not being able to have children. I wanted my human noble and Alistair to settle down and have babies. I felt like a selfish idiot when I put Alistair on the throne and made my GW queen. It will be the shortest dynasty in Ferelden history

There is a work-around to that assuming you don't remance Alistair.  Keep Zev on the side as your lover.  He isn't tainted so there is at least a chance (albeit a low one) that he can get your HNF pregnant.  Call it the King's for public consumption and presto instant heir.  You can explore this possibility (in a couple of dialog lines with Alistair) late in the game.  He disapproves (slightly) but doesn't say no.

Heh I don't feel sad at all. I'm one of those strange women who was born with zero maternal instinct. I can't conceive (no pun intended) of ever wanting a child, which pretty much extends to how I play my characters as well.

But yes, I'm assuming Alistair/Loghain/male Warden can get Morrigan pregnant because they're all freshly minted wardens - fertility appears to decline over time. (She does say Riordan wouldn't be suitable because he'd been tainted for too long).

The madness and darkspawn turning thing isn't terribly appealing though. If there's a chance to sacrifice yourself at the end of Awakenings I'll be tempted to take it.

Alistair is the last of a very long royal bloodline. His chances for children are slim anyway even if he marries Anora or Bimbo Bannorn. Your PC is a Cousland, a very high ranking noble family even older than the Theirins. Fergus is still young enough to re-marry and have children. That would be the most obvious choice for succession.

Having no children of their own can cause trouble but it doesn't have to. ^^
All considered now. The heir thing really bugged me.

Don't Gray Wardens become the Genlock/Hurlock Alphas?

At least female Grey Wardens still have the option of turning into a Broodmother.

Please no... that thought still haunts me. Is that going to be my ultimate fate?

I'd be be practising HiriKiri in that case.

I'd imagine most Grey Wardens would do their utmost to make sure they were killed, given the alternative. Some might be unlucky enough to turn, though.

I guess it was good thing that they made Fergus reappear at the end. I know the first time I played DA I had no idea about GW+GW=no children so I happily made my Cousland Queen, they I found out that it would be the end for both the Therin and the Cousland line. But then Fergus magically comes back, so I guess it saved the Cousland line.

Isn't being killed the point in going to the Deep Roads when they hear the Calling? Suicide by darkspawn.

I do not think Wardens become darkspawn. As far as I remember, it has been said that people who succumb to the taint become ghouls, i.e. near-mindless servitors of the darkspawn with rather brief life expectancies, usually used as cannon fodder. Or broodmothers, if the sickening procedures Hespith describes are inflicted on them.

I rather like the Wardens having trouble reproducing, and being unable to do so with each other, as well as the gradual decline which ends in the Calling. It shows very nicely that they have a heavy price to pay.

Ewww...broodmother... haven't run into it ingame yet... but still... nasty....

I liked the idea of a taint at first.... but thirty years is a rather short time to live.... and the partner of GW has to watch the slight decline

I can imagine that a GW would go to the DR BEFORE the thirty year mark? I mean.... if it eats away at you over a looong period of time, I'd rather not see what the PC/Alistair looked like at the very end

It's 30 years if they join young, roughly...but the older they are when they join, the less time they get. All things considered, it's pretty sucky.

I thought I had heard, not sure where now that Grey Wardens are
sterile. I didn't give it much thought at first but now I am thinking,
that can't be right.

Otherwise how does Male Grey Warden,
Alistair, or Loghain father a child with Morrigan? (Unless that ritual
of hers specifically needs the father to be a sterile, Grey Warden)

If not where did I hear this? I though it was something Alistair said to me but can't remember.

You know, these are good points.

Hey someone could adopt poor Amathine (or how ever you spell her name), if you played HN you all know who I'm talking about.

As far as not being able to have children I've always thought the women wardens got shafted after playing a male pc n didn't do the ritual n saw at ending credits that morrigan was with child (might of been with child n the father might of been the warden.) Ha if she is with child it better be my male pc's kid n she wasn't goin off doing someone else after she gave me that lecture about not sharing lol.

True. Very true. Though I could possibly live with it if I'd turn into the Architect... He seems quite intelligent.
But, yes. They say Grey Wardens are quite sterile so I suppose the only way to have a kid is do the ritual... and even then the fact that he's your kid probably won't really be visible ever with the whole Old God thing..

the secret Morrigan/Flemeth agenda might be to "cure" the "taint", allowing GWs to live a normal lifespan and have children, maybe even with each other.

Or Avernus might come up with something. He's how old again? Granted he used blood magic, but he's rbeen estricted to more 'ethical' research.

It shows very nicely that they have a heavy price to pay.

To pay for what, though? All being a GW seems to get you is more respect so you can get things done (as far as the treaties go) and the ability to kill the archdemon. Those really aren't things most GW's would need to worry about.

Sensing darkspawn doesn't seem all that useful if you're on your guard when wandering around outsde of towns, which is a good idea in case of bandits and wild animals, too. I suppose being immune to the taint is part of it, too, but since everyone else in the game (except maybe for some people at Ostagar and mabari who actually BITE the darkspawn) can fight as many darkspawn as they want with no ill effects.
