My canon Shepard has been a Vanguard ever since ME1. I generally take biotic/tech based squadmates with me for the ranged and fine-tuned work, and Shepard himself is the blunt instrument that blasts the &$%# out of everything. It's fun and tactical.
There's nothing more manly than winning a hard battle by smashing into people recklessly. I played the Vanguard through Insanity and when I was done, I noticed I had grown a third testicle. Bioware did a great job making this class live up to it's name.

I want to try another class so badly, but I just can't. I've been a Vanguard since I first bought ME1, and while I have beaten each game with a Soldier before, my loyalty lies with my original character. I've imported my level 60 VG 5 times, and 4 of those times I played as my canon class (once as a Soldier).
The Assault Sentinel looks fun, as does the CQC Infiltrator, but the Vanguard is far too awesome to pass up. The same kind of applies to my romances; my Soldier took Tali, but 3/4 of my Vanguards couldn't resist Miranda -- I'm in virtual love I guess :S. My current Vanguard is trying to preserve my Ashley romance, and if I succeed then this will be the first character I import into ME3.
The Vanguard can have my babies.

Meh, Heavy Charge makes Vanguard pretty survivable in my experience. Against typical enemies, anyway: heavy enemies like krogan are a little bit hairier to deal with. Loving the Eviscerator, but it was the Shuriken that got me through most of the early game.
Try this against Krogans. Substitute sniper rifle for heavy pistol/AR if you don't have it.

You're really making me regret scrimping on Pull. I've just been having so much success with Charge that I never felt the need. Sure makes Jacob a nice person to bring around with me, though.

I didn't take Pull either. I know it's useful but I didn't want to waste points in Shockwave. I took Reave instead. I know... I'm a bad person.

That build is based off of Sinosleep's. I use Area Charge on it instead of Heavy, which makes fighting Krogans and Vorcha together pretty tough which is why I'm glad I had Pull Field and the sniper rifle. Great, fun build.

I love destroying Krogan armor from a distance with the Viper (it drops so fast) but I usually immediately follow up with a Charge them off a ledge (or just back out of my face) instead of Throw.

Unless you are playing NG+ I really don't understand the hate for the Katana. I have several low level vids showcasing the katana 1 shot + melee or 2 shotting everything site. It's a perfectly viable early game weapon.
I totally got caught up in the Evi madness, but recently I went and replayed Jack's mission to make a video for someone having trouble with the beginning. I took the Katana because I only had one upgrade in shotties and wanted the x1.5 mod vs. shields. I really enjoyed it. I think it's a great gun vs. shields and barriers. I'm glad that I got that chance too because I would have written it off for Evi if I hadn't gone back to play that mission.

Hey, I even used Shockwave twice in that video! It has its uses, and it doesn't help that Pull Field can almost do the same thing with a shorter cooldown. With that said, however, when enemies are lined up in front of you and you want to toss some and stagger others, Shockwave is a hell of a power.

I was kind of over-using Pull in that video just to kind of show off the Pull/Viper/Cryo combination. It's pretty good, but I definitely Charge more in real play.

@thisisme8, did you go with Squad Cryo in that video? Also, what do you think of the Claymore. I never picked it up and kinda regret not trying it out.

I think my build in that video is:
2 Incendiary Ammo
3 Cryo Ammo
4 Area Charge
2 Shockwave
4 Pull Field
4 Champion
I definitely did not have Squad Cryo though.
If you want to see the Claymore in action, you really need to watch this video from Kronner:
Vanguard - Collector's Base First Part
That spike damage potential on this gun is amazing, and with Christina's "Reload Trick," the gun has the power to tear through tons of enemies very rapidly.

Thanks. It seems like any Vanguard with Charge and Champion maxed will do just fine, the other powers are useful but it's really all about preference.

The only problem I have with the vanguard is that the gameplay really gets pretty simplistic. In my experience, it's all about charging, shotguns and shotgun butts. You don't really need to use other biotic powers much and you don't really need to use other weapons much either. You can round out with the viper but I kind of felt that this class didn't have the late game rewards of the others.
Thats if you decide to play like that. There is nothing stopping you from using a submachine gun, pistol, AR, or sniper, using squad biotic combos, using pull or reave or shockwave, or doing a multitude of other things. Most videos in the past were of vanguards doing nothing but the same shotgun and charging over and over again but things are starting to change.

Good luck with that on Hardcore.

Everything is all over again. Someone charges all over again, someone spams Reave, someone spams Warp explosions, someone spams Tech Armor, Drone, Singularity, Cloak, Adrenaline Rush.. how is that different is beyond me. Every class uses the main power all over again. As for weapons, nothing is as effective as a shotgun up close, you can still play with SMG if you want.
For example, the tactical cloak can be used to escape from a bad situation, to line up a perfect sniper shot without being fired at or to move in for a close range kill. The biotic charge is basically used to dive into combat. Theoretically, you could use it to escape but your escape would be right into the clutches of another enemy. Don't get me wrong, I love the uper-aggressive vanguard play style but I think it's not quite as multi-dimensional as the other classes.

I've finished the game with a vanguard on insanity.

Of course maybe my problem is just that I maxed Charge out to Area instead of Heavy, and it doesn't seem to do any significant damage that way. I used Retrain double quick after the mission to change that.

Well, I'll take your word for it, but I just damn near broke my controller in the Horizon mission on Hardcore and one of the things I tried against the Husk waves is exactly what you're describing.

I'm using Area Charge on my Vanguard right now and it works out pretty well. I guess you just have to play to the power's strength, which isn't damage. Actually, neither Charge should be used as a damaging power, Area Charge especially.

I don't understand people that argue that charge can't be used to run away, target someone not in the grand melee you are partaking in, and charge+shotgun(+melee[evi]+shotgun[scim]) and he is stone dead, unless its an elite, and even then he's seriously wishing you'd stayed far away.
