Well, I'll take your word for it, but I just damn near broke my controller in the Horizon mission on Hardcore and one of the things I tried against the Husk waves is exactly what you're describing.

Of course maybe my problem is just that I maxed Charge out to Area instead of Heavy, and it doesn't seem to do any significant damage that way. I used Retrain double quick after the mission to change that.

I'm using Area Charge on my Vanguard right now and it works out pretty well.  I guess you just have to play to the power's strength, which isn't damage.  Actually, neither Charge should be used as a damaging power, Area Charge especially.

That's very true.  Space Hamster, one of the main things to grasp is the fact that charging refills your shields so often when faced with the choice of trying to run for it or charging in for more, it's actually safer to charge in.

I think a big part of the problem is I seriously need to stop relying on Barrier so damn much. It's okay in ranged situations, but as a countermeasure against getting rushed by Husks, it's completely useless - I need to use Charge for that.

Barrier is completly useless for a Vanguard. 12 seconds long cooldown kills it. Charge or even medigel is always a better option.

I did just fine without Barrier on my Insanity Vanguard. I will agree that the gameplay gets very repetitive but I still never got tired of it.

area charge also only gives 75% base shield boost, in place of heavy charges 100% + slow down.
I don't understand people that argue that charge can't be used to run away, target someone not in the grand melee you are partaking in, and charge+shotgun(+melee[evi]+shotgun[scim]) and he is stone dead, unless its an elite, and even then he's seriously wishing you'd stayed far away.

Very true.  And just to be clear, if you are trying to min/max and make the strongest build, you may want to stay away from Area Charge.

My Shepard was an overpowered but boring shock trooper in Mass Effect 1. When he got brought back I turned him into a Vanguard. Best friggin ME class ever.

Agreed. Heavy Charge is definitely superior on Insanity.

Yeah definitely, i was just saying, and i think the OP did this, that if he's having trouble with survivability then he should respec to heavy. You've shown that vanguard is doable with area thisisme8, but it creates a less charge heavy (haha, get it?) vanguard.

Yeah, Area Charge can be fun, but it gets me into trouble more than it should.

I'm scared to try it. I'm a pretty crappy shot, and losing the Heavy slow will probably get me killed a lot more.

I hate the 30 second reload screens A LOT. Almost as much as Too Human's death sequence.

doesn't area charge stun enemies around you at all? you would think that would be useful.

It does, and it's what makes it so cool, but I'm not that great of a shot, so the lack of slow-mo plus the lower shield recovery hurt me quite a bit.  I think someone that is a pro at shooters would benefit the most from it.

area charge is good for assault rifle vanguards. The assault rifle allows you to significantly soften up your enemies before you charge and then with area charge, you can stun 2 or 3 guys and then finish them off with quick vindicator bursts to the head.
