Look these words up:

1.  Strategy
2.  Surroundings
3.  Scouting
4.  Preparedness
5.  Pre-emptive

Using these to their full advantage will help you.  I'm playing first time through on 'hard', and it is thoroughly enjoyable - looking forward to having a go on 'nightmare' :D

Thank you, Bioware, for at last providing a game with 'challenge'.

ATTENTION: I know full well not to curse and all that and i have controled myself however: I have full rights to express my frustration and may seem to offend you or any kind like that. I'm not here to anger or upset you, i am merely expressing my opinions in an aggressive manners as my patience for this game has unfortunetly ran out. I hope you share my opinion and hope that Bioware will consider this and work the game AS they have created trailers for. So as the title says, it's about the difficulty in the game. Enjoy <3<3<3
------

So yea the game is good and all that let's skip to the sh** part.

Here's
my impression of the combat: IT'S ****G HORRIBLE
ATROCITIOUSLY DIFFICULT. Now since the patch came out the game did get
easier BUT THAT DOESN'T CHANGE ANYTHING, most of the time there are
just SO many of them just storming all over you! ZERG RUSHED if you
will!

Here are 2 examples, there's a side mission telling you to
help some refugees, sounds easy right? Help bunch of refugee's against
like 5 Darkspawn and that's it right? WRONG.
There's about 7 or 8 Sword Darkspawns, 5 archers and 1 emmissary,
that's total 13 - 14 darkspawns! And the strongest types too! there's 4
of you and 6 others fighting, remember these are refugees so they are
only using small knives, no not daggers but knives. And the moment you
SHOW yourself most of them turn they're attention to you when not even
using taunt and so you get swords against you, and the archers even the
emessary, and the guy you are controling is so far ahead because you're
teammates hangs about 3 - 4 feet behind you, so you're main guy is
gonna die quite quickly and so does the others. TOO HARD

Then
it's the other one, it is too find out what happened to a caravan, we
all knew from that moment on that they've been raded by the Darkspawn,
kill 3 or 4 and done. However they did once again a fatal flaw, one
Alpha, one Emmissary, supported by 2 archers and 3 or 4  sword guys
that's 8 against 4 and two of them are Elites: give me an ****g break.
I focus my attack on the alpha my main characters dies and another one,
leavingthe 2 other standing with good enough health only to die within
10 seconds thanks to the ****G STUPID IDEA TO MAKE THE POTIONS INEFFECTIVE.
If i go after the closest archer the 4 swords gangs up, killing my main
guy and same problem repeats, only to be worsened by the Alpha. Again,
can't be completed.

Now on the main problem of the game that started even before the game even started; Choosing the difficulty in the game. SERIOUSLY?
You make so many trailers just how badass the Grey Wardens are and how
great the teamwork is, you show us a gang who kicks ass and someone
worthy to be mentioned as the best fighting force in the game best
possibly in the RPG genre! And you really didn't think adding a
difficulty setting would render the trailers obselete? IT DOES! My
character is an pathetic excuse for an protaganist and his team is
bunch of weaklings! SERIOUSLY BANDITS CAN KILL A GREY WARDEN JUST LIKE THAT?
Oh yes, if i could choose, i rather become a bandit in the game as they
kick more ass and are far more powerful than the weakling Grey Wardens.

Bioware, let me tell you something, i'm not a developer i'm a writer, so i blatant have never made a game in my life, But i GOD DAMN
know when i create trailers about a specific powerful units creating a
difficulty setting only renders the trailer obselete and massive lies.
I remember the first time i saw a trailer about the Grey Wardens i was
like "WOA the Grey Wardens kick ass and i will be like one in the
game!"  I also imagined to be a Grey Warden you had to be an
exceptional fighter and show remarkeble skill in figthing, i was
apperantly correct! that added even to more the awesomeness to the Grey
Wardens, then i was killed by bandits and all my expectations went
downhill from there, then i was pissed off when i was killed by thieves
in the biggest city.

Congratulations Bioware, you manage to
build up the Grey Wardens to be an invincible fighting force to the
most saddest, pathetic, weakest, fragile, class ever. Mass Effect
however is a different thing, you nailed the Spectre part perfectly
well and i felt like an individual fighting force, but here... die to
thieves... is an ****g insult to all of us gamers, to us who have
waited to patiently for this game to come out, but i think the ones you
insulted the most are the ones who has waited since the game was in
development and still waited for this game to come out when it was set
on holdt.

Here is what i propose

1) Have less enemies to fight against and increase they're XP worth
2) Remove the difficult bar, this shouldn't there in the first place!
3) Make our hero stronger, he's even weaker than thieves DAMNIT!
4) REMOVE THAT GOD AWEFUL ENEMY SPELL THAT RENDERS POTIONS OBSELETE! IT'S ****G SELF EXPLANATORY WHY THIS NEVER BEEN IN AN RPG BEFORE

get your shiz together bioware, this game is complete BS and the worst hypocrit game i ever played

I hope you realize crying & complaining will help nothing. if the game angers you enough to complain on here then just stop playing. Its that simple just stop playing you're obviously not good enough to handle the game mechanics & successfully wina  battle without complaining or stressing so just stop playing so we don't have to read these negative posts about ppl who are not good at video games.

This game was designed badly. F.e. when you take Morrigan for first time, then you can move just to one place (the game will not let you go anywhere else). Then, random encounter will happen every time (it is called "The dog"). Thats unavoidable for my character (Dale elf). But 8 enemies will appear and run to you so quickly. You have your main, Alistair (tank) and Morrigan. But you did not use Morrigan before - so you dont know how to use her skills. And I do not want to have any damn dog. But I have to fight that random encounter no matter what, and it was a hard one for me.

The game on easy diff. should be really easy. All of you, Masters, feel free to play on hard as you like. But please know, that if the game will not be suitable for "mainstream", there will be no more of such games (people will not buy sequels). So please, be gentle.

At beginning of the game, as I know, there is no healer neither thief available for your party (unless your main char is one of them), but so many chests you cant open. Why it is i dont know...

You have absolutely no freedom, the game permanently force you to do exactly what it wants. But i dont wanna do that, i refuse to cooperate that way. And thats why the story did not catch me, instead i hate the game.

A lot of people feel betrayed, because in accordance to trailers, we were expected something very different. We have anothe Neverwinter instead.

What a shame, Bioware...

This game really punishes bad character build and lazy or stupid people. If you fall into one of those categories you can a) reroll B) learn to play noob! or c) read some posts about how to use the tactics system and improve your game. I read about 5 of these new posts a day and generally get tired of trying to explain the simple way of optimizing tactics and charcater synergies so im not going to bother. Suffice it to say theres alot of material here to help you figure it out. Im 12 hours in on my 3rd char on hard and I have yet to die, even to these zerg rushes you speak of.

Why is it so hard for people here to agree that there are infact OTHER people expecting something a bit different when they started playing this? Such a narrowminded view to have that anyone that doesn't conform to this game and its way of playing is a "noob" or needs to "L2p". This kind of idealism is dangerous as it sends the message that everyone should be the same and enjoy it no matter what.

Also, if you are tired of reading these posts as you put it, shouldn't you be playing the game and leaving us "noobs" to our mindless posting? I still have no idea why people complain about people complaining if they are happy and yet here they are arguing with the people they claim are wrong in the first place. Interesting.

Why is it Biowares fault if someone departs with their money for a product they now little to nothing about?  There is no law stating that their games must have the exact same gameplay as the last one.  All the information was there.  If you rushed out and bought it knowing nothing about it and are now upset I hope you have learned a lesson.

I find it just as narrow minded and naive that people who knew not what they were getting into now expect the game to change to suite them because they themselves do not enjoy the game.  Would you go buy a FPS game then get upset because you wanted some sort of stratergy game?  Or purchase a game that it had been made clear was made to be a single player game with no multiplayer then rage because you wanted multiplayer?  Do you purchase romance novels then get angry because you enjoy mystery novels?  This is the reason there are genres.

Sorry your disapointed with what the game is but maybe next time you and these "others" wont rush out to get the new thing without learning a little about it first and discovering if it is something they want or not.

Easy is really easy. If I can't beat a boss I'll switch to easy and it'll be a walk in the park.

*Spoilers*

For example I don't even need to use potions when fighting Flemeth on easy but on hard it's almost impossible. All the fights in the early game are easy enough for you to win without a healer and with the party members your given. Once you can go to the mage tower though or else you're going to be in for a bit of pain.

Ill say this again - this is happening because RPG games have been dumbed down since the original Bioware/Black Isle games and if you didnt play any of the original classics, this 'spiritual successor' is going to make you do things in rpg games that you haven't before. Which is pause, select each companion in time and get them to do exactly what you want.. this is ON top of their normal scripts. This is what classic rpgs were about - and this was their beauty. I loved the ogre fight on mine - on normal I killed it without a single death and a couple of potions use. All 4 chars used strategically and contributing and the fight lasted around a couple minutes. It was enjoyable but perhaps a little bit harder would have been better.

The difficulty is all relative but this game is definitely not 'too' hard - dumbing it down further would just hurt the game.

Seeing some of these comments, I'm really curious about what some people were expecting. Obviously not everyone has the same opinion of the combat difficulty as the OP. It's clear several people share the OP's opinion, although I tend to think most of those who are enjoying it aren't likely to stop playing just to post about it here.

Based on people's comments I was expecting a much harder game. I'm only about 5-6 hours in, playing on hard. So far it's been challenging but never frustrating. I've only used healing potions sparingly, and I've had little use for a healer yet (although I'm sure I will soon). Personally I find the combat is immersive, fluid, manageable and way less boring than NWN2, kotor etc. ever was; thus far I feel completely in control of the battles. For me, it would be very unfortunate if the difficulty was tweaked more to make the game any easier. I'm not even remotely an rpg genius, so I do find the complaints a little bewildering. I just think people must be approaching the game in very different ways.

For anyone who's really struggling but isn't giving up just yet, the game guide has a lot of really useful info on tactics and how to approach many different combat scenarios. I hope people are able to figure it out because I'm really having a lot of fun playing the game, and I think with a little patience others will as well. I can also agree it's probably not for everyone.

I sincerely hope Bioware ignores the complaints of those who lack the capability top formulate tactics and actually play the damned game.

Honestly, 99.9% of games on the shelves are incredibly easy. This is the ONE game made for those of us who enjoy tactical party based RPGs. I'm sure the rest of you can play Guitar Hero or something if you don't want a thoughtful challenge, but quit blaming the developer because you are bad at games.

Remember, this game isn't your standard issue hack-n-slash dungeon crawl RPG. It is a slow paced game requiring tactical planning for battles. Crowd control is a must. Have your mage use AOE spells to thin out the baddies. Cone of Cold, Force Ligh...I mean Shock. Try playing with Tactics disabled. This will force you to keep an eye on all your party member's health and allow you to give orders more frequently.

I would suggest the complainers give the game a chance, and try developing their own strategies. This type of game is very fun when you get into it, just don't expect it to be something it isn't.

And the person who mentioned D&D clerics is apparently ignoring Vancian magic- healers and magic users in Dragon Age are *ridiculously* more powerful than they were in classic D&D games including the Baldur's Gate games. You think healing is hard now, try dealing with one a day healing spells.

It's just frustrating when the audience 99.9% of games on the shelves are aimed at whine and complain about the ONLY game of it's type to be released in years. I don't think it's necessary to dumb down party based strategic roleplaying. I'd be willing to wager for every vocal whiner about the difficulty there are ten gamers new to this style of gameplay who are too engrossed in the game to **** about it on a message board.

Most people find the game hard because they don't even bring a mage along, and if they do they don't use healing spells.

Because of no healing, their characters die all the time. And when they reach the boss, they have 10 injuries on each character.

Of course the boss is hard that way.

Is there a patch to this game? My comp is having problems with downloads anyways, I'll just play unpatched.

The game was difficult for me around level 7, now I'm 9 and things seem easier (I picked up Wynn and dropped Morrigan which helped). Although the revenant in the mages tower was extremely tough, unlike the revenant in redcliff. I'm thinking their hp scales with my level or something. But even then, this thing had some serious damage resistance, I had to lower it to easy just so I didn't burn through all my healing and mana potions, because his health was going down so slowly.

The rest of the mages tower has been cake, however.

While I haven't found the combat Impossible I have noticed that as I made my way to light the fire in the tower I was cutting my way through happily and I seemed to be leveling at the correct pass with the difficult of the monsters and the game. That is I would win the fights as long as I kept my wits about me.

But then I went to the first village and suddenly I notice that the NPCs I have picked up are higher levels than my hound and me. And things were a lot more difficult, it felt like I had either missed out on content or dispite having doen every quest I could find was not getting the right levels of xp. Not to worry but then I went to defend redcliff after some tough fights and it was more of the same. Now I don't agree that the game is too hard, I can't help but feel that I am a level or 2 lower than I should be. And can't help but wonder if I have missed content or some how not been awarded the xp I should have.

I'll try to find it but I do know one of the Bioware guys mentioned that there are some fights in the game that should be saved for later and mentioned redcliff as being one of the tougher battles in the game. The advice that was given is to wait till you have some more experiance and levels under your belt.

Working as designed. The game uses the same level scaling system as, say, KoTOR and Mass Effect.

I played bg, bg2, nwn, somethingdale, and kotor, I have played several different set ups and it always comes down to the same thing, The combat is either too complex for me to understand or my team are weinnies, normal a cake walk, I simply dont believe you. I have learned that to set up my team all with bows and arrows will get me thru most situations as you can pick them off pretty much before they get to you, but when it has to be a toe to toe fight, the npc's overpower me and usually i will refight several times. tried cheats to try and level the playing field, well they made those obsolete with the mobs matching your lvl and appropriate gear. Presently at Redcliffe and the fight wont end, I finally survived it aftert the fifth time but the game is stuck in this battle scene.

Hi all,
I am new to the RPG and bought this game on the strength of the promo and gameplay trailers. My usual games are FPS and RTS. Now I have been very frustrated over the years on games being no challenge at all even on maximum difficulties, and all the forums and communities for such games all echo the same tune "To easy", "No challenge" so then out come the modders who make the games more difficult even impossible at times, then everyone is happy (for a short while at least).
With this game however normal difficulty setting is tough, it makes you think, press pause look at the situation and adapt, hence the very very good tactics for the party characters. Set these up correctly for your style of combat and away you go. Shock horror 2 mins later everyone dead. Fantastic a game that can beat me even when I try everything, just what I wanted. Now everyone who has the game one day after release are ****ing that they cant do it coz its to difficult. HO HUM it appears if its to easy we **** if its to hard we ****. I say STFU and play **** !

That is all D

Most of the time you can easily avoid the large fights by kiting or you could try to not pull all groups.

Also a nice tip equip all your characters whit range and you can ezy take out archers from a long distance. Even hard mode is pritty ezy if you scout and play every fight relaxed.

Next time you run in some area you havent been to be carefull and scout whit 1 party member step by step if something happens position your party and take them out.

Yeah, definitely need to utilize cc in this game whether it's through traps, mage abilities, or the different types of stun talens certain classes get. Also, regardless how you have your tactics set up want to control the other characters at times at the very least to stop them from running blindly into an area where they will get quickly overwhelmed, activate traps unneccessarily, or simply to use a poultice or lyrium potion.  As with most games you also want to remove the threat of ranged attacks asap whehter by incapacitation, death, or lure the melee to an area the ranged cannot target you at.

Surprisingly, the one damn mob that causes me a headache at times when he's around is the Revenant when you have to fight him and some compadres at the same time. That damn pull ability he has where he can grab everyone to him has gotten me killed a couple times.

Surprised no one else has that problem heh.
