I have played this game far too much, and I'm still playing it.  That being said, I just wanted to post my impressions/advice on each class.  This is more to help people choose classes when starting new games than anything else, I rated each class on a 1-10 scale of fun (how cool I thought it was) and Insanity viability (How hard was it to make it though on Insanity).  Note that I started every playthrough importing a lvl 60 ME 1 toon.

Infiltrator: Fun 7 / Viability GG 10
Quite frankly, this class will make mince-meat out of insanity.  The ability to turn invisible instantly drops all enemies targeting you; this can be quite the life saver.  Not to mention that the ridiculous damage buff you get while invisible turns most enemies into a one shot one kill affair.  The weakest enemies do not even require your cloak to be a one shot one kill once fully upgraded.  Also this class has the best passive class ability in the game,  when fully upgraded time slows down while using your sniper rifle.  This happens every time with no cool down, it is impossible to ever miss.  Make sure you pick up warp ammo, the Kuwashi visor, all sniper upgrades, and train in the anti-material rifle.

Soldier: Fun 6/ Viability 9
This is another class which will allow you to sleep through insanity.  I played this class before the infiltrator and (once I played the infiltrator) realized I had played it just like an infiltrator.  I went for insane sniper damage and rolled with the vindicator battle rifle to clean up after softening ranks with a few blasts from my Anti-material rifle.  A great class, but one that (in my opinion) lacks some personality.  This is mostly due to the fact that an infiltrator is simply a more fun soldier when played the way that I did.  I felt myself waiting for my adrenaline rush cool down for sniper shots when, had I been an infiltrator, the adrenaline rush effect activates whenever you scope your sniper rifle.

Vanguard: Fun HELL YES 10/  Viability 7
This to me was by far and away the most fun class.  Zipping around, beating people down and blowing them away in slow motion was a blast.  I rolled with the eviscerator DLC shot gun, but I have seen strategy guides advocating each shotgun as useable.  A word of caution, you may find yourself dying a lot from getting carried away with blood lust, just pace yourself or turn down the difficulty, this class should really be just a fun playthrough.  Another thing to note is that when it comes time to choose additional weapon training, I went with the sniper rifle, but honestly I feel as though this took away a lot of the classes personality (although the sniper rifle is the most formidable choice IMO.)

Sentinel: Fun 5/ Viability 7
Although the shield is great for keeping you alive, on Insanity, it doesn't really make that HUGE of a difference. This ability was, to me, the least interesting/fun class ability.  Although you can certainly beat this game on Insanity with this class, it really is all business.  The highlight of this class to me was that it has overload and warp, which no other class does.  Powerful, efficient, but less fun than its counterparts.

Engineer: Fun 5/ Viability 6
While the Engineer has several abilities that are unique to it when compared to the other classes, all of its abilities are available through other squad mates.  That being said, I felt this class lacked any sort of distinction.  This playthrough was the least memorable for me, and one of the more difficult.  Once you get special weapon training and cool down upgrades, it’s not so bad, but Horizon was a rough time on this playthrough.  Long CD's and only the pistol to rely on forced me to turn it down to hardcore for that mission and return to insanity afterwards.

Adept: Fun 7/  Viability 6
The biggest obstacle for this class is the fact that you have nothing against enemy shields and no special ammunition.  However, these issues are easily overcome by bringing along Garrus or Miranda in your crew and acquiring warp ammo ASAP.  You will want to try to set up as many warp combos as you can, I liked unstable warp for this.   The mission to the Horizon colony was the hardest bump while leveling this class, but once that was over it was fairly smooth sailing.

Note that on every playthrough, I opted for advanced sniper training, due to the fact that softening the enemy horde at range almost always plays out as the best option on the higher difficulties.  As the infiltrator and soldier, the anti-material rifle seemed to be the best option.  I did experiment with the claymore and revenant rifles, but was ultimately unimpressed.  An Infiltrator can kill a Scion in two cool downs with the anti-material rifle (and henchmen warps/incinerates) no other weapon seamed nearly as devastating.

As I start my seventh playthrough, (and first level 30 at the start playthrough) I have decided to revisit the Vanguard, and if I play through again after that it will be either the Adept or Soldier.  On any subsequent playthrough, I will try to avoid sniper training due to the fact that I feel the sniper rifle detracts from the essence of the 3 classes above.

I hope that those of you just starting a first or second play through find this message helpful, have fun!!!

Nice summary, if I did something simillar it would be like this:

Infiltrator: Fun 5 / Viability 10 - kinda boring class, probably because I played it right after my Soldier playthrough
Soldier: Fun 9/ Viability 10 - great class, Revenant is my 2nd most favourite gun and Adrenaline Rush rocks
Vanguard: Fun HELL YES 10/  Viability 9 - best class by far in terms of fun for me, Claymore
Sentinel: Fun 8/ Viability 10 - Assault Armor + Shotgun or AR and you can laugh
Engineer: Fun 3/ Viability 9 - least interesting class for me, powerful but I did not enjoy it very much
Adept: Fun 4/  Viability 9 - ok, but the biotic combos got boring after a while

All classes are really powerful, I gave Vanguard a 9 because of occasional Charge bug and overall risky playstyle, Adept and Engineers cannot take a lot of damage so 9 is just right for them too.

I like your rating better. I think all classes can be pretty damn powerful. I also think soldiers viability is being constantly overrated.

Viability is a hard one to rank, on the basis that much of it can depend on who you pick as squadmates, and how willing you are to use them to potential, as well as playing your Shep aggressively. Oft-times, sitting back in cover can be the wrong thing to do. You gotta get out there, run around, and punch out stuff quickly while they're incapacitated for the 1-2 secs that they are. Hiding behind cover at long distance doesn't allow you to capitalise on the skills that classes like Adept and Engineer give.

I'm honestly surprised the Adept isn't clicking for people. Setting up those singularity traps and doing all those lovely biotic combos was one of the most fun Insanity runs I had.

Then again, I didn't enjoy my Vanguard playthrough very much. So clearly my opinion is wrong.

I played Soldier on Insanity+, and an Infiltrator on Insanity, and felt the soldier was much easier (especially with NG+), but I am gonna try an Infiltrator on Insanity+ soon. Vanguard was an interesting class on insanity. It destroyed everything, except at certain points. At those points it just took FOREVER. I spent so much time on the Reaper-baby, it wasn't even that hard, it just took forever because I didn't ave a powerful long-range weapon. I just got bored and switched it to normal to take it out real quick (it was not worth another 10 minutes).

How fun a class is is completely subjective. The class balance is fantastic IMO. I don't see any one class as being superior to another. Everyone seems to love the Vanguard to death but Adept was the most fun to me. And that's why this game is so great, everyone has different experiences based on their playstyle.

The OP seems to have ranked the Soldier as the Infiltrator's little bro. You played it like an infiltrator, and trained in the Widow, so of course it's not going to be as effective as the Infiltrator was with the Widow. The Soldier really shines with the Revenant and Incendiary/AP/Warp ammo. The Soldier is also extremely deadly with the viper, bu far the best sniper rifle in the gmae (just my opinion).

Vanguards live on the edge, making them fun to play but also more prone to dying. One bad move/bug can kill you.

Adept was most boring for me during the early levels, but the most fun in the middle to end stages - heavy shockwave, area pull, wide singularity, heavy throw, warp detonations.

Awesome class once you get through the dreadful early stages with your non-leveled pitiful powers.

Soldier: Fun 8/ Viability 8 -- Revenant was pretty BA and so was Adrenaline Rush.

Infiltrator: Fun 6/ Viability 9 -- Didn't play it for very long, I hate the Mantis.

Vanguard: Fun 11/ Viability 8 -- Most fun I've had by a mile, though some parts are difficult.

Adept: Fun 6/ Viability 6 -- Didn't play for too long, but enemy protections kind of suck really hard.

Engineer: Fun 4/ Viability 8 -- Combat Drone was fun-ish, but every ability they have, a squadmate has too.

Sentinel: Fun 7/ Viability 9 -- Tech Armor looks awesome and having Warp and Cryo Blast is cool.

I my personal opinion, of course.

From my runs in insanity (twice with each class), I would say:

.

Infiltrator: Fun 4 / Viability 7 - I really didn't like playing with the Infiltrator, maybe because it doesn't match my play style.

Soldier: Fun 9/ Viability 10 - Extreme porwerful. Because bullets can.

Vanguard: Fun 10/ Viability 9 - Had much fun with it. Trying to charge everywhere, dying a lot testing tatics, few things are as fun as charging and 1 shot kill.

Sentinel: Fun 9/ Viability 10 - It was OK when I got the shotgun, but when I got the AR this class shined. You can't die.

Engineer: Fun 7/ Viability 8 -Thought I wouldn't like it but ended enjoying it. Maybe because I study engineering.

Adept: Fun 7/ Viability 7 - Play almost the same from start to end. Kind of boring.

I'll give 2 different scores on sentinel.

Sentinel: Fun 5/ Viability 7 - 1st play through, used mostly powers. caster build if you will.

Sentinel: Fun 8/ Vailibity 9 - 2nd play through, assault sentinel. don't use much warp/overload, it's all about smg and shotgun + tech armor + cryo blast to finish things off.

I have to agree that the Adept in the beginning was by far the most annoying. Apart from finally using my Blood Dragon Armor =P But in the end I got a soft spot for it.

Mine would have to be...

Infiltrator: Fun 10 / Viability 10
- Reasoning: In all shooters I play I'm a sniper so I was able to ease into this class very easily and I like to see those vorcha collapse after every head shot. I'm not saying I hate the vorcha I just incredibly dislike them =P

Soldier: Fun 5/ Viability 8
 - Reasoning: It's great in its own right, but for me this was my second least fun play through.

Vanguard: Fun 10/ Viability 8
- Reasoning: I remember at one stage I was tempted to yell "I AM KROGAN" Mostly because my roommate and his girl friend were doing it when I Charged =P but Charging and Claymore so much fun.

Sentinel: Fun 4/ Viability 9
- Reasoning: Like the original post said it's all business I don't remember a single thing from this play though. Only that I grew bored of it. Because all encounters were the same...Disable Defenses, use Assault Rifle, continue.

Engineer: Fun 10/ Viability 7
- Reasoning: For me this was also one of the most fun classes for me. I think it was mainly due to the shotgun training =P but It was just so much fun. My Roommate, His Girl Friend and My Girl Friend think something is wrong with me and I need to see a doctor =P I think I'm in the minority here.

Adept: Fun 9 / Viability 8
- Reasoning: Since when does being a kickarse Jedi Biotic not fun? =P couldn't give it a 10 because it made me go insane when I got to weapon specialization..."Do I get the Shotgun...Or Sniper Rifle...OH What about the Assault Rifle! Ugh! Difficult!"

I found every class to be a 10 easy to play through all viable so heres order of fun

1.) Vanguard - Obviously charge is awesome and evi shotgun being better than the claymore opens up sniper training

2.) Sentinel - Shotgun/assault armor + team mates abilities I am always running in right off the bat in most battles. Rarely fired SMG.

3.) Soldier - Really fun with the awesomeness of AR Revenant clear a room in no time flat.

4.) Infiltrator - Sniping targets for long distance somewhat satisfying

5.) Adept - warp explosions pretty cool even though I could set em up on other characters, just could not get behind the long range combat so much.

6.)Engineer - Drone somewhat cool and again could not get behind so much long range combat.

Mainly like the classes that could play up close and destroy stuff ie vanguard/sentinel/soldier and I played all the classes that could go up close and personal that way. I started with the Vanguard class on insanity and that probably shaped my opinions of the rest... I am a Vanguard at heart.

Viability is highly dependent on skill and preparation. I have beaten the game with 4 classes and found it pretty easy with each. Every encounter that I died on just needed better planning on my part. The only times I actually had a hard time was in my first couple plays when I didn't pay very close attention on what enemies I am fighting and bringing the wrong henchmen.

Oh yeah, and that STUPID save the quarian mission which kills me over and over.

Totally agree on Vanguard being most fun and Infilitrator being easiest.

Really enjoying Adept at this point. Using the auto-sniper with warp ammo strips the sheilds/barriers and armor quickly then it's just me and my practice at olympic merc. hurling with biotic combos.

I love taking Garrus or Grunt with their concusive shot. Pull a few bad guys. Concusive blast them higher while my cooldown finishes then launch them through the atmosphere with area throw or area warp... the just go flying and it's so much fun. Or take mordin along, and pull or singularity a bunch of vorcha, then release his incenerate... sometimes they turn into floating, fiery, poopscicles and sometimes they explode (which is more fun than it should be).

It's not easy, mind you. But the challenge is very rewarding :)

Fun 9/ Viability 8

Just the classes I've played to date (on Insanity):

Infiltrator: fun=9, viability=9

Soldier: fun=8, viability=10

Adept: fun=7, viability=7 (<- first Insanity run, and first time with Adept, so hampered by my inexperience)

Engineer: fun=9, viability=10

It so hard to give an accurate rating for the classes because it really entirely depends on how you play. Every class can be boring as all get out or the most fun class ever. If you're the type to hang out behind cover for the majority of a fight then it doesn't matter what you play, odds are its going to be a bit boring. On the other hand if you play really aggressively and use cover somewhat sparingly every class is going to be really fun if you can get over the fact that you will die a lot more this way.

I agree, and this is probably why people equate the Vanguard with fun.  No other class gets an ability that can get you into the thick of battle that easily and allow you to do absolutely absurd burst damage.  High risk, high reward is a lot of fun.  I thoroughly enjoyed my Vanguard insanity run, but it's just not my style.  I'm a control freak.  I like to keep everything in front of me and pick the opposition apart from the safety of cover.  Adept gives me all of the tools I need to do this while still keeping me entertained.  Warp explosions never get old for me and neither does Pull+Heavy Throw B).
