Why not just a list of skills / powers to choose from. You pick what you want your shepard to be.

Because games that let you do that are often poorly balanced since devs can't take into account he myriad of combinations that result in completely overpowered "classes".

Hell, even with classes, Christina has stated that she has seen videos of players performing above their expectations, and also using them in ways they hadn't thought of.

Because restrictions are important even if that sounds stupid. A class that can do it all would just be boring as hell.

I want Charge, Singularity, Adrenaline Rush, and Incinerate as my class powers please.

What do you mean that's stupidly overpowered? What about Warp, Overload, Pull, Disruptor Ammo, and Incendiary Ammo? Still overpowered even without all the uniques? Dang...

I would love to see something like that unlock as a reward - for beating insanity or for 2 complete play-thrus or something else along those lines.

I don't see how anything is ruined for a player by unlocking a "possibility" after beating the game the way the devs intended it to be played. If a player found it boring than said player could go back and play only the pure classes. What's wrong with unbalanced? - It can be a lot of fun to own the game. It's also a lot of fun to try to make the worst class imaginable and find a way to make it work. No one is harmed by choices in a single player game. For me it's all about fun and I would definitely have fun with mixing and matching weapons and skills.

I would love to make an infiltrator with nothing but the widow on my back (because it would look cool) and a single sidearm and nothing else but a few ammo powers.

You lose your incentive to play the game as another class if you make a super custom class. Plus each class has an identity. Don't you guys love talking/arguing about what you like about each class.

Too many people would just rush through the game to get the custom class I think.

I mean, that would be cool It would be like Fallout in that way. There is no class, you just build it from the ground up. I mean I don't think it would be a disaster or anything although all the classes would start feeling the same as some skills would be ignored in most but the most off-beat builds. Although I would enjoy the freedom.

It'd be a bit like The Elder Scrolls then I guess.

You'd still want to limit people from taking multiple class-based powers. I mean, something like Biotic Charge with Adrenaline Rush, Tech Armor, Cloak + Warp Ammo would trivialise the game
