I am wrapping up my second playthrough of ME2 and am preparing to tackle the Insanity difficulty.  So, how bad is it?  I've read quite a few posts on here and around the net that pretty much lead me to believe that playing this particular game on insanity is as close as you will really come to dying in a firefight in the real world.  In fact, after reading these posts, it seems quite daunting and intimidating.  What I would really like to know is if it is more difficult than some other games on the market that I've faced before (the past three Call of Duty games on Veteran and Halo 3 on Legendary).  Is the fight on the Collector Ship really worse than COD: World at War and the endless spamming of grenades?  Will the battle against the Scions and Praetorian evoke not-so-fond memories of spending three or four hours going after the Mile High Club achievement in COD4?  Will I bash the neighbor's head in with my controller in a fit of rage?  Please note that my plan is to take my Level 30 Soldier through the game.  Is this a wise approach or should I start from scratch?

It's way easier of you start from scratch, but the soldier has the easiest time with insanity, so nice class choice.

lol, the only hard parts are fighting the scions without sniper rifles, warp or armor piercing ammo.

if you have any of those things, or you have all 3 of those things, insanity scions will be easy. grunt is necessary since he is the tank. i team him up with zaeed, samara, tali and of course miranda. depending on the mission and the enemy types.

Having played both ME2 and the Halo games on Legendary, I'd say that those two are pretty close, with Halo being a little more difficult. I made a post about Insanity asking about it before I started mine, and I realized after I started that it isn't near as bad as people make it out to be, at least not for a Soldier or Vanguard. The only difference is that you have to play smart, as opposed to run-and-gun (although I'm doing the latter as a Vanguard now, which is totally fun). Honestly, just dive in and try it. It's not all it's cracked up to be.

If you beat the flak cannons level on cod waw on veteran (that was pure hell - and worse than no fighting in the war room or mile high club on cod mw, if you ask me), insanity should not be difficult with a new game as a soldier.

you can cheap the hard part of horizon (search for it) and the revenant destroys the collector platforms. the rest is just fun.

Using a soldier on insanity is the easiest way to play through it. Some parts will be a pain in the ass, and you will rely heavily on your squad mates. Make sure to bring someone with warp and overload with you.

ME2 definitely feels pretty easy since you can almost hide "indefinitely" under cover... thane + legion with widow rifle for legion and myself = AWESOME for final mission :) takes out harbingers in a jiffy

It's not bad if you play smart, manually control your squaddes and their powers, and realize that your shields provide about as much protection as wet kleenex (so invest in health bonuses, not shield bonuses).
Also, be aware that Miranda will be coming along with you for most missions (she has warp and overload).  If you've got something against Miranda, insanity will be much harder.

meh not that hard best advice is hit the enemy hard and fast and kill as many as possible as soon as possible. other strategy is when fighting the collectors to allow the harbringer to stay alive and kill all the drones. I prefered to take as many drones out as possible asap. Also cover is your friend, and the only thing that really sucks is when harbringers shoots that black ball thing that makes you fall out of cover.

Simply slide from one side of your cover to the next to avoid this.

That Collector ship fight is a pile of dicks. Other places on Insanity I managed to get past with a little patience and strategy, but ugh. **** Scions, **** Harbinger, and **** TIM for railroading me into this hellhole in the first place. Fives times, I've tried it, and the farthest I've gotten is the second/third platform.

i found the collector missions to be much easier than anything else, also barely ever took miranda along, overload is overrated if you've got vindicator + disruptor or warp ammo. couple of clean shots and you're in the clear

Dominate is your best friend. Just strip shields/armor/barrier and you've got a new buddy.

Just make sure to target enemies in the back. If you dominate enemies too close to you, they sometimes run and hide in your cover, usually just in time to snap out of it and start shooting at you.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I will definitely factor them into my strategy for this upcoming nightmare. I guess if I survived Burn 'Em Out on COD:WaW without murdering random strangers then I can survive this. BioWare, BioWare, BioWare. I love and play your games like an addict but did you really have to make the last achievement I need one that will take countless hours of pain and suffering? I'm losing hair just thinking about it.

Go Warp Ammo or Armor-Piercing Ammo. As much as I hate being narrow-minded in this regard, they're the only two skills that will significantly speed up the tedium that is Insanity mode.

Beat it three times now with different classes, and it's hard to want to select any other skill (Area Reave is sometimes good though).

If you have played on Hardcore then the step up to Insanity won't be too bad. I prefer playing NG+ though instead of starting brand new. You don't get as many bonuses but you at least get all your weapons and skill points.

I would invest in damage upgrades first then you can worry about shields / health later. If you focus on Shep's primary weapons [Soldier == Assualt Rifle && Sniper Rifle] you'll likely have just enough cash so you don't actually have to make a hard choice.

I use N7 armor. I'd stick mostly to either +damage dealing, + shield / health regen, extra ammo options for the N7. +Health or +Shields is better than nothing but not by much :)

For weapons I use:
-- Revenaunt LMG [TONS of ammo / good damage / good ROF / etc.] ... Use for mostly short range work until you get the Assault Rifle Accuracy Upgrade then you can reliably use it for medium range.
-- Viper Sniper Rifle [Tons of ammo / good DPS / good ROF / etc.] ... I use this for long range work esp. picking off Collector Drones while Harby is strolling around the battlefield
-- Evi Shotgun ... This at least makes shotguns useful but at the cost of making other shotguns obsolete.
-- I forget the pistol name [not the Carnifex] ... I prefer more rounds && higher ROF to large one-time-damage. I use this if I'm almost out of sniper ammo and I also use to to shoot the tubes for the baby reaper. If you're lucky you can get 2 tubes each phase
-- Early the Collector Particle Beam [when you don't have lots of ammo]. When you can get at least 1 shot off with Caine though make the switch. Many folks consider Caine cheating but it's in the game for a reason -- just make sure you use it at the opportune moment.

EDIT:

Skills:  If you've played on HC with most of the classes you'll know what's good :)

For Soldier I like Heightened Adrenalin Rush .... the extra slowdown works well for me.

Squad Distruptor and Squad Inferno ammo are a must ... make sure to take time at the start of missions to set the ammo types on appropriate weapons.

I like maxing the passive [choose what works best for you ... IIRC I like the one to max Paragon / Renegade points.

Finally I prefer 1 point in Concussive Shot because it kills an armorless husk on Insanity with one shot.  In areas with ledges it also will push an enemy off if they are close and armorless.

I am humbled by the skills of other players on these forums.

I have two different Shepards hopelessly stuck on Collector Ship platforms. One's a Warrior, the other is an Adept.

For both I've repeatedly loaded an earlier save on the Normandy so I can retrain, and bring different squadmates, but they've each died a few dozen times on those darned platforms. (Note to Bioware/EA: Sure would be nice if I could re-train teammembers!) I think my Warrior Shepard got to the 2nd platform just once.

My Adept Shepard was sent to the Collector ship right after Grunt's loyalty mission, and he was completely out of ammo! Good thing I had a save game prior to that last trip to Tuchanka.

I read on a different thread that it's best to start Insanity with a level 5 Shepard. So that's what I'm going to do next. I have a level 5 Sentinel Shep ready to go.

Also on a different thread, people were talking about equipping the Geth Sniper Rifle and the Claymore shotgun. I thought only Legion and Grunt could equip those weapons. What must I do so Shepard can equip them?

Maybe it's because I was a Widow Infiltrator--I'm certainly not great at shooters--but I had literally no trouble on Insanity, except on the Collector Ship fight. That still only took 4-5 tries. I don't get what everyone's talking about, really.

Infiltrator is easy-mode, though. With the recharge reducing powers and Geth Shield Boost you are basically invincible

Agreed!!! Darn near made me want to stop.  Had to go back and choose different squadies and start over, I musta died 7-8 times before I finally got passed those bloody platforms...I have ALOT more respect for Grunt as a damage sponge now!

Of course nice thing is that once I was done with that, and also with collosus in  the Tali recruitment mission on Insane, I was giddy with pride...Almost giggling that I finally beat it.

Insane might be evil! but it is sure rewarding when you get through...
