I'm a gamer, and I'm proud to be one. I never hide my habit from anyone who asks, but yes, I do often get the feeling that many people still regard 'gamers' (at least, the dedicated hobbyists and not those who just dip their toes in by playing FarmVille on Facebook or something similar) as being something of a loser. Despite games becoming a lot more mainstream, thanks to recent innovations like the Wii and the proliferation of casual games on sites like Facebook or Myspace, there is still the implication that being a hardcore gamer means that you are socially maladjusted, easily addicted, and being otherwise 'abnormal'.
Now, I'm sure all of us here know that's not the case. The vast majority of gamers do have stable employment, have hobbies and interests other than gaming, and frequently have partners and families. But for some reason the stigma remains, and I suspect it's due to the fact that the general media often portrays games and gaming in a negative light, as an activity that people do only when they can't get involved with anything else.
I do believe that this will change in time; with the introduction of the Wii and casual gaming on social networking sites, more and more people in the younger generation are realising that gaming is FUN, as much fun as any other activities that people do for recreation, and as they grow older, they'll be more accepting of people who have games as their most popular pasttime. For now, it's the older generations who are still having trouble coming to grips with it. My parents, for instance, while they've come to accept my hobby, still think that games are a tremendous waste of time.
Is it socially aceptable to openly say you are a gamer?

i'm definitely a gamer, games help stimulate the mind, and they help hand eye cordination
, im 20, i have a decent job, a girlfriend of 3 years, a 2 year old child, an apartment, car, and friends, i also play guitar and write music, along with drawing, and many other things, and i've been playing video games ever since i could, so in summary i live a very happy life, and if playing games makes me an outcast, nerd, abnormal, or anything else, then i think their is something wrong with the people judging us gamers and not us. So F*** what other people think about us and F*** the norms, i like video games, so suck it!

To answer the OP: No, but I do it anyway. Can't stand people that try to pretend to be something they aren't. (I believe we called them Posers back in the day.) So I openly admit my gamer-ness.

I am both the stereotypical nerd and the anti-thesis to such simultaneously. And so I enjoy first acting the stereotype and then crushing people's perspective of it. Sometimes it's fun to mess with people.
Besides, nerds rule the world anyway.

It's acceptable to a certain extent. It really depends on how much you play, what games you play, and what you don't do in order to play.
For example, if you play sports titles or popular FPSs all the time, it's socially acceptable because. well, those are popular titles. Now, if all you do all days for weeks is play them, then your teetering on strange, but they still may just call you obsessed. Now, change the title to a lesser known RPG, and there's a good chance you'll be labeled weird.
A sure fire way to be labeled weird is to forgo a night out to stay home to kill some zombies or level up your Dark Elf.
Most of your true gamers are introvert personalities, from what I can tell. They don't have a problem with being alone for long periods of time, don't need 30 friends to hang out with or bug constantly (a close few will due fine), and are generally more intelligent than the average person. The problem is, extrovert personalities make up a greater number of the human race. To them, someone who doesn't need 30 friends to hang out with or bug constantly, and who is perfectly fine with being alone and not going out every other night, is "weird".

Being a gamer helps define my personality. I reference stupid things and quotes from games all the time.

People are baffled when I tell them I'm a gamer. Apparently, I don't "look like the gaming sort" but for those who know me... know better. I'm also female. Women play games too.
I found this article regarding women and video games and thought it was interesting.
It just bothers me that some people don't understand that video games have become another form of entertainment to keep us happy just like music, TV, and movies. I'm a nerd and I'm a gamer and I'm happy.

I can't say being a gamer is the first thing I bring up when meeting somebody new, but I don't try to hide it and I am enough different brands of nerd that people will quickly catch on.
The only place I would actively try to hide my geekier habits is in a professional environment. If I think folks knowing I am a gamer could have a negative effect on me professionally I will at the very least play down my involvement. So far, I have always found stealth nerds where I have worked though so the danger would seem minimal.

Just subbed to this topic and rated it 5 stars. I would like to write down and remember all the good points and arguments you guys did
I am proud to be a gamer. Back then I was afraid to let other people know because I was afraid I would be considered a loser. Now I am ashamed of that. I don't give a **** what people think anymore. I have so much more to say but I'm deciding not to
) I'll just quote the famous words of a well-known World of Warcraft elite player named ATHENE
“If you are like me, you should be honored. If you’re not proud to be a gamer, then what's life about? It's about DA GAIMEZ. It's about having fun. You should be proud to be like me.”

I'm proud to be a gamer and will freely admit this in a professional environment. So far this has been met with rolled eyes, derision and cheap comments about me acting my age.
But I will pass on a little nugget of wisdom. If asked what you did last night, don't reply "I made sweet passionate love to a blue chick for xp" Apparently thats sad and not amusing as I thought.
