Whether it was overshadowed by a greater game or came out when your computer died or 360 red ringed or just when life wouldn't give you the time, what game simply came out at the wrong time for you?

Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. It came out at almost the exact same time as Half Life 2 which stole all the attention. That is why the game is considered a "cult classic."

Oh yeah, a more recent example is No More Heroes 2. It came out the EXACT same day as Mass Effect 2. That pissed me off.

Beyond Good & Evil. It was overshadowed by Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.

Agree completely with Beyond Good and Evil, a true classic.

V:tM: Bloodlines was also a great game, but I think a bigger issue was that it was so bug-riddled and unfinished when it was released due to the devs going bankrupt (which also didn't help with the marketing).

Divinity 2: Ego Draconis is probably gonna be an overlooked game, considering it came out the same time as DAO.

There's a No More Heroes 2? Why does no one tell me these things...

Bloodlines was ok but it always felt to me like a poor mans Deus Ex.

It was a poor man's Deus Ex. Considering how exceptional Deus Ex was though, even a poor man's Deus Ex is a great game by most standards.

Sin. If I remember right it came out the same time as Half-life. No good for Sin.

Yeah, there were a ton of great FPS in 1998 like Sin. Half Life stole the show though.

Could be wrong but a community came together for the PC and fixed those bugs on Vampires.

For me it was the initial batch of ps2 games like Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty, Silent Hill 2, Devil May Cry etc.

I did not have the money for a PS2 until like a year or so after the system launched.

Virtua Fighter on the Sega Saturn. Despite a three and a half month head start it still released way too close to Toh Shin Den and the Playstation launch. At the time everyone derided VF on Saturn for its crappy graphics and lack of personality next to Toh Shin Den, and in many ways this early launch and quality slip up set the tone for the Saturn's drawn out demise.

A game that I simply never found time to play: the Witcher. A dear friend gave this to me as a birthday gift two years ago, and I've never managed to get around to playing it. There is just so much else out there that it's ended up lost in my gaming backlog.

Find time, definitely... and patch it up (EE patch, if you don't have the EE version of the game). Probably one of the better RPGs in the last few years, despite it's somewhat lacking combat system and at the same time one of the best alchemy systems ever. Just... try it. And then follow it up with custom modules. To he honest, game's only fault was that it came out too early so it was kinda weak on the technical side of things. Now when it's patched it absolutely rocks, despite some complaints about combat (basically, it's a timing thing).

Grey moral ambiguity at it's best.

I own the standard european version, but I have the patches. :) Thanks for the tip, though! I downloaded them and the soundtrack soon as they were available. I do that for all my games. That way I can play them as bug free as possible when I get around to it.

I'll probably get around to it later this year. There's an RPG dry spell on the horizon; leaving me plenty of opportunities to go through some old games. :)

I am sure its failure was a resul of being not a complete game, and buggy as all get out.

I think it was more because of the Source Engine thing and rushing the developers to release early because Bloodlines would've then been the 1st game to feature it. But honestly, I don't remember what the situation was and if there was some pressure from Valve or Troika having early version of Source engine, I don't know. Although no one sane in their mind will deny that all of Troika's games were bugged on release, pretty much because of time constraints and publisher pressure.

No. I guarantee you the fact that it was virtually unplayable had something to do with it.

I actually first played Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines sometime in the middle of 2005 when I found the game at a bargain bin. By then, the game was patched but even patched the game was still very buggy.

Interestingly enough, I think some of the bugs actually added to the game's creepiness.

That's a bit of an exaggeration, isn't it? I was able to finish Bloodlines at least once that I can remember before any patches came out. It had bugs, but unplayable? Let's not get carried away. :P

I couldn't play it until the fan "patch" came out, since it would crash to desktop every time I entered the sewers. And the fan "patch" ruined a lot of other things.

When I did manage to play the game I enjoyed it, but that was about a year and a half after I bought it.
