...seem somewhat 2d when looked at through the perspective of the player. At least for me.

Yeah, they're interesting and some of the quests surrounding them inME1 were interesting (I Remember Me comes to mind) but nothing has been done to create empathy for the player to what occurred. At least not
significantly. I believe a flashback of sorts to the events would have been neat. Even if it was at the start of the game or whatever, just to draw more emotion and pull the player in. That way, you can choose a dialogue option with some actual background and vision to what he (or she) experienced as opposed to picking them in a bland way. We could spin our own perspective on what happened.

I dunno if anyone else feels this way but I thought that I might as well put it out there. It could help add another dimension to the experience. I Remember Me was pretty intense, and I felt engaged but I feel that some thoughts, or flashes about what happened (his parents and friends getting taken away) when the slavers came would help give us that extra understanding or whatnot.

We spend so much time helping other characters with their ish and we barely see any of the troubles that Shepard went through. Though it's probably too late for any of these things to be done now but a DLC update might be nice.

Thoughts?

I agree... no matter what background you select, it rarely affects your character. You have, I think, one problem that arises from your past, and a few dialog mentions... but it doesn't remotely affect who you are. There was some good potential there, though.

I don't know... I found myself able to empathise quite well with Talitha and Toombs, although much less with some of the other assignments relating to your past.

I got the impression, perhaps wrongly, that this was the intention.  The backgrounds are presented in such a way that they don't impose, for lack of a better term, perspective on it.  You know for example that Spacer Shepard spent most of his/her (from here on just his) life on ships, but the way it's presented you have the ability to decide how that effected him.  Did it make him restless, anti-social (regularly having to pack up and leave and probably with few other children to associate with), or did it make him treasure every moment he has with people and embrace relationships, no matter how short lived.  By leaving the backgrounds vague and "bland" as you put it you leave the player with the freedom to assign whatever emotions they want to the event.

Ok I'm probably gonna get hit/threatened/flamed for this but you mean something like the beginning of the Fable games?  You play a small snippet of your childhood, with decisions to make and renegade/paragon points to gain to help you shape the character in your own mind.  Actually that might have worked, go back in time and pitch the idea before the release of Mass Effect.

Now maybe this is because I'm an old school PnP Roleplayer (I've been playing since the SNES was a top of the line system) and an amateur (very amateur) author but I do all of this in my head (later on paper).  For every Shepard I've made I've written out entire histories, I have 4 word documents detailing 4 different versions of the attack on Mindoir.  Now as I mentioned it may just be me, I've come up with histories for Diablo II characters as well and they give you next to nothing (yes I'm sad shut up).

Yeah it would be nice to have somebody come up and ask how I'm doing for a change.
