i been looking around and I think I have a pretty unique problem despite having possibly the same core problem.
I can play ME2 just fine on my laptop and decided to dl ME1 on here as well.
its a intel core i7 with some type of NVidia Geforce card in it ,can't remember the full specs but can give with request.
I download the game just fine, but I can't seem to find out how to install as admin... which might have something to do with it, but I don't think thats the problem.
I download just find, but the problem is when I try to play it. It runs the autorun just fine after install, but when I try to play the game it opens ME compatability widnow, and then it says that the program has stopped working and must close. any help??4

Let's have the usual data needed about the desktop machine, first, then we don't have to just make a WAG?

I thought you wanted assistance with a regular gaming type PC, but you think that a NOTEBOOK equates to a desktop?  Since when?

Seems to me you need to review your basic computer literacy text's glossary pages.  Look up what "download" and "install" actually are.  There is never any "autoload" file involved during normal PLAY.

Notebooks are fine, depending on whether it uses a dedicated or integrated chip. Mine has a dedicated GeForce 9500 and runs Left 4 Dead and the UDK fine. Mass Effect stuttered like hell though. But it looks like his card is newer than mine.

So what do you mean by download? Is it the Steam version or something? If it works fine by going straight to the exe, I'd just live with it. The launcher just wastes time anyway.

go to your mass effec install directory, open up binaries, right click on MassEffectConfig.

Click on the compatibility program then swap it to either vista or xp

I did that on my computer and it worked fine (i had the same problem as you)

finally some help and not insults. some people, serious.

alright, i will try it using vista, and xp compatability.

and you would think that this doesn't equate to a regular gaming PC, but so far it runs exxcellent.

I played ME2 on here just fine, on full settings and everything. Same with GTA IV and Dragon Age. so I figured that playing ME1 wouldn't be a problem. Sorry to confuse you, but I should have said laptop...

ya this laptop is awesome like that.

Consider the overall marketplace and the mentality of the average shopper.  Well above 90%, perhaps even 95% at peak buying seasons, are straight onboard, nothing more, so notebooks get no respect.  Then, look at the wildly disparate choices all of the laptop makers make when deciding how to build a mobile card.  Almost none pay any attention at all to the reference samples and suggested specifications that ATI and nVIDIA provide.  They pray so devotedly at the altars of long battery life and low weight, that they constantly compromise on performance.

In your case, you ended up with a three year old design (8600M GT), recycled to a thinner die wafer, and then some maker adjustments reduced its performance more than merely the age of the design had already done.

Never assume that "age" means a lot.  A brand new onboard chip is STILL crap, same as last years onboard chip was, and the year before's as well.  On the other hand, a High End part that wasn't subjected to huge compromises may still be in the ranks of Medium, three years after it was new.  A medium card, depending on where it ranked in its class, may slip to Low End in only two years.  The desktop 8600 GT hasn't "quite" slipped that far, although it's at the borderline zone now.

The true Medium card these days is the GT 240 Geforce.  The 220 and 230 are more or less bookends one either side of your 9500, one in the borderline close to being a Low End card (220), and the other next to the bottom of Medium.

Be that as it may, read the thread.  The OP didn't seem to know anything about the "desktop" PC that was giving him (her) difficulty, nor did he / she seem to have a good handle on the definitions of the words he (she) used.

I guess I'll have to suffer. Nothing I can do compatability wise will fix it.

If you launch from desktop, have you tried compatibility mode-ing the shortcut?
