The problem isn't the developer, though. It's the designer. He just hasn't had a focused concept since Bullfrog collapsed about a decade ago. He comes off as the guy that gives his development team a list of features and tells them to do something instead of figuring out if it'll even work together and the time table is big enough.Allison W wrote...
Hey now, I actually liked Fable II. I didn't play the original, though.
I just wish someone could properly muzzle Pete and make him work with developers who can actually get **** done. Like BioWare or Bethesda or Volition Inc. (Saints Row 2). Because then his good ideas might actually see a good execution.
Problem: Fable Gamers Didn't Understand Half Of Fable's Features

OK, you're right. Someone who can muzzle him and focus him.
...Hmm, they said they got rid of the morph system. I hope that's just the good/evil/pure/corrupt morphs. I'll be a sad bear if height and build are fixed now; that was actually one of my favourite features in Fable II, even if I am like one of five people who didn't hate it.

I wonder where Molyneux got his ideas for this game. Listing them off, they really do sound like something a child with no concept of financial budget or the shortcomings of modern technology would come up with a group of friends when discussing what kind of video game they'd make if they were handed the reigns to a developing company.
It all sounds so nice (no one refutes any of this, either), but its just not anything we'd ever hope to see in this medium. Or any medium. Really, a perfect Fable wouldn't be like anything ever made. Its pretty much the coalescing of everything that made every similiar game amazing into one composite package of epic.

I suppose what remains to be seen is whether Fable III is a big improvement on Fable II, as (I hear) Fable II was to the original Fable.
If so, the pattern suggests that while the games probably won't ever get as awesome as he wants them to be (because that'd be insane), they may actually get pretty epic at some point. Like Fable V or VI or something. In fairness I had a lot of fun with Fable II as it is, so while I'm taking everything Pete says with a grain of salt, I do plan to get Fable III.
It is worth noting that while he's clearly a dreamer and will always set his sights somewhere beyond what's realistically possible, that he also appears to be a medium-focused artist (as opposed to having come in with one particular thing to express and then burning out), and they tend to improve over time rather than get more dull over time.

I think that the problem was more that 60% of gamers didnt care about half the features of Fable 2.

Peter Molyneux is probably the only game designer I'd like to meet just so I could punch him in the face. He seriously needs to shut the hell up and actually make a decent game again.

Fable 2 was a good game, but nothing ground breaking. I think Peter said he wants to bring Fable into the modern world, continueing the franchise beyond the thrid installment would a mistake.
Haveing played all Lionhead games, the only games I really liked was the Black and White series, despite it's many flaws.

After playing Fable 2, I remember thinking "There's no way an rpg can be any simpler and dumbed down than this." How wrong I was to underestimate Peter Molyneux! He seems to have taken my comment to heart and is now dead set on making a game where you only have to use one button or something! Or maybe you don't have to play it at all, you just press A and the guy kills everything in the room automatically!
Even Fable fans have to see Peter's comments as an insult to their intelligence.

If anything, the Fable series should be much more complex when taken at face value. While there might be little things here and there that might seem too incomprehensible for the average consumer to bare(from which the conference and its discussions stem), the main core of the game is still just far to simplistic to ever think of a further dumbing down of system mechanics. Really, a game focusing on morality should be longer and deeper than what Lionhead has presented with the last two games. They're like little tastes of what should be.
I can't even comprehend a Fable game with simpler RPG mechanics than what they've already given us, but alas here we are with this very possibility.
