Now I wonder - maybe that's what Mass Effect is? Let's look at the facts.
Inquisitors in WH40K are tasked with roting our heresy, corruption and treason, and are in that respect very much unlike Spectres. But hold on. They are not given specific tasks, they're just told what their objectives are, given resources to complete them and then report when they are done.
Like Spectres, they'd have their own ship, their own crew. They often recruit mercenaries, psychics, spies, assassins, hackers and all other sort of folk for their 'entourage'. They are above the law and those they capture have no rights [though unlike Spectres, they actually have authority, not just immunity]. While most of them are pretty ruthless, there is again a divide between 'Purists' [people who believe Inquisitors shouldn't use psychics and such] and 'Radicals' [those that believe they need to do their work no matter what, using Chaos against Chaos].
So you have an individual above the law, with his own ship and crew, able to recruit all manner of interesting people and even with its own Paragon/Renegade system... Am I right in thinking that could have been the inspiration for Spectres?
