- So far have you encountered any really tiresome dungeons like The Fade or Deep Roads in DAO? And what has been your favorite area?

Unlike ME2 the context dialogue is full conversation and not simply ambient comments from a party members. We do give up the "list of questions" that you can ask a party member -- but, after discussing it within the team for a while we decided that had limited value. You got to talk to someone, but without context it was all exposition. So we're trying this out. There's still lots of dialogue and banter, but with any luck it'll be more effectively used.shertokch wrote...
it has its up and down sides, but in the end, i guess there is less dialogue and therefore you wont get to know your companions as good as in DAO, but DAO was a 70 hours game and awakening only 15 hours, so i think its really a good solution. the context sensitive dialogues make a lot of sense.
Yay! I wrote Blackmarsh -- nice to hear.btw. the blackmarsh part of the main quest i just finished was fantastic, in no way worse than the mage tower or the red keep of origins.

I can't comment on the game's story but it would be best if people read both the calling and the stolen throne before commenting on the story.
Why? I shouldn't have to go other places in order to feel satisfied with one stories story.

I guess its a bit of a trade off then: more context sensitive dialogues on the events at hand versus having the more expository but non plot related chats. Having not played Awakening yet, am I right to think that the "list of questions" would be like in DAO being able to ask Leliana about her stories or asking Morrigan what its like growing up in the Wilds or asking Alistair what being a templar was like?
So in Awakening , you can't just start up a chat with a companion and ask from the list of questions but rather you'll be prompted at the dialogue points to start a conversation or if you were in camp you would only be able to chat with someone if they had something specific to tell you? Doesn't this limit your ability to get to know the party members unless you take them with you on quests?

Eh, this isn't the biggest issue in the world (that would be the debacle with dead wardens choosing between completely unexplained ressurections and complete loss of their world-state/story), but I honestly care a heck of a lot more about the dialogue and choices then I do auto-slashing my sword through some random darkspawn.
Look at a game like Heavy Rain. The key selling point of your games is not actually the combat portion. Dialogue and persistent choices are what make the games sell to us.
Now I'm looking forward to this whole supposed "you get to choose which of your companions take the oath". That seems like a fun persistent choice type situation. But in general it seems like the design philosophy that makes Bioware games great has been getting tossed out the window lately.

Agree- Bioware games for me are always story and characters 1st, combat second. Thats not to say that I don't enjoy DA or ME's gameplay and combat but I can remember playing BG2 as my 1st RPG ever played and cheating my way through the game because I loved the story so much but couldn't get into the combat.
But if the change is for the better, then its much concern about nothing- and since I won't have Awakening until Tuesday, I'll reserve judgement on any tweaks they've made until then.

Well, Nemesis, would you mind starting an Orlesian warden and checking how things go in the early game? A lot of us are very eager to know.

As much as I love games like Fahrenheit (Haven't played Heavy Rain as I don't own a console but it's obviously the same style), The Longest Journey, Beyond Good and Evil, those really aren't made in the same mold as Bioware games. While Bioware does no doubt put alot of time and effort into their stories and dialogue and it is what separates them from most other RPG centric developers, it's not their even their main focus. They are designing games with good stories and dialogue where as Quantic Dream and Funcom back in the day were more focused on giving you a story that played out a bit like a game. Bioware likes to cater to the masses, and the masses are more interested in game play and general plot than dialogue and sub plots. It's not a knock, just a fact. They make RPG's and character progression and combat are the biggest parts of an RPG, I'd say more so than story and dialogue.
I would love to see what the Bioware writers and think tank could do if they designed a game styled more so that dialogue and story were given more focus over action and pacing. Could be interesting, could be a complete disaster.

The fact is, it's gotta have tons of both to be a successfully selling RPG. Someone on this thread said that in the past, bioware focussed on story and dialogue first, combat second. That's not true at all. Bioware's biggest titles were exceptionally combat intensive: Baldurs Gate, Neverwinter Nights.... Dragon age origins...

I REFUSE to read any of those stories til I am done with Dragon Age...that might take a long long time.
Then once I am done, I will buy those books if they are still in print...just to flesh out knowledge I have gained.
