It's not that I dislike the default Shepard face - I just don't understand why anyone would want to play with that face. There Bioware has given us a great face generator to make our own characters, and the result is many people can't be bothered to use it. Why play a role-playing game if you can't even be bothered to make your own face?
Both my main Sheps were default in ME1 for a very simple reason. The lip-synch sucked on custom Sheps to the point of distraction. The facial expressions were bad too.
That's been remedied somewhat in ME2 (It's not perfect, but it's not so bad it looks like an old Jackie Chan movie) so both Sheps have now become custom. (I like to pretend they always looked that way much like when they get another actor to play someone in a TV show)

My female shep had eyes that stuck out a bit due to growing up in space. And a thick-ish neck due to training.
Being rebuilt gives you the option to "fix" those flaws, so why not? Oh, and now she thinks she's hotter (after the scar-removal treatment) she decides to put on a tiny bit of eyeshadow.

I REALLY wish they let us import our faces like we can from DA. I mean what other data is worth uploading to the site if NOT the face? I spent alot of time creating a face for each of my characters in ME1, and am really happy with how they imported over.
As for Default male Shep .... I really don't think that voice goes with him at all, it is off-putting.

As for the marketing, that's done for people who don't have the game, remember? You need a lead character that looks like someone people want to play as for the ads, hence the existence of default Shep. I know it worked for me, even though I can't imagine playing with that face anymore.
Oh, and here's my Shep. I keep meaning to get a pic of my FemShep too, but I haven't gotten around to it.

And yeah, please Bioware, pretty please with sugar on top, custom Shepard avatars... if only so that I don't have to snap pictures from my TV anymore...

and hooorah to customization! I remember giving a funky reaction to the idea of "quick start male/female" when I first started up ME- I was like "wait what's the point of this!" XD

I support Sheploo as the iconic male Shpeard, and after his trilogy is ended people WILL remember Mark Vanderloo's face as the true Shepard.

You people are just jealous because Mark Vanderloo, aka John Sheploo, is incredibly handsome in a rugged and manly way.
If by rugged and manly you mean effete and poncy, then you're correct.
Plus his face also looks leaps better from a technical standpoint than any custom Shepard can. Sometimes the polygons don't mesh that grate and create pointy spots on his/her face, which don't exist on Sheploo's smooth and detailed face, the hair also looks like crap on custom shepards and the skin texture is also not as detailed most of the time.
Yeah let's criticise the hair, forgetting for a moment that Sheploo doesn't have hair.
Also, bad polygons are the inevitable result of any poorly made face in a custom generator, but thousands of faces have been made without any such problems.
In fact, with ME2's wider range of expressions, Sheploo fails at them most of all, ending up looking utterly creepy.

Like hell they will. I won't, and a lot of other people won't. Take your misinformation elsewhere.

That would be a hell of a lot easier to avoid if the face generator allowed you to rotate the face properly. My Shepard looks fine from all of the angles you can see there, but once I used him in the game, I noticed the problems I mentioned before.
Never noticed any problems with the facial animations on custom faces, though. I did a pretty thorough first playthrough with the default male, and some scenes actually look less goofy now with the custom face, if anything.
Oh, and here's my FemShep. She actually came out a bit too doll-faced for the renegade personality, so I kind of like what the scars are doing to her look, but I'll probably get rid of them eventually. The eyes are supposed to be blue, and that's kind of ruined now.

And as for the polys, yes, the flaws aren't always that evident but they are still there most of the time and the polys never mesh as seamless as they do in the Sheploo model. The reason for that is, i believe, that they had to cut down on the poly count for the customizable head models to allow for easier displacement of polygons and make the editing utility more user friendly. Customizing would have been much more difficult on the number of polygons the default model has, or at least that seems to be case from what I've gathered while trying to make custom Shepards.
As for the expressions, NO, that's because of the poor animations which apply to all models. Sheploo does look creepy sometimes, but at those points so does every other Shepard as they too apply to the same animation. He fails at some expressions no more than custom Shepards, or so I deduced from the custom Shepard I've played with, and I have yet to see a case that proves this wrong.
And you and only a few others might not remember Vanderloo as the true Shepard, but the majority will, and that will make Vandershep represent the true Shepard more than any other custom one. Face it, you said it yourself how this whole thing is a respons to Sheploo's limelight hogging, because of Bioware's marketing he always was and always will be used as Shepard by the majority of Mass Effect players.

Once the marketing dies down, people are going to be watching videos of gameplay .. missions they have trouble with or whatever.
If you want to watch someone tackle a particular mission on insanity, you won't see Sheploo.
'cos the bottom line is: there's no point watching a cutscene twice, but there's countless ways to play the game (and play it well).

Well I could do that too because I've already beaten the game once with Sheploo on Insanity. But that I won't be bothered, it sounds boring and like a lot of work, enjoy your narly ass looking Shepard.Tlazolteotl wrote...
And that's why I'm in the process of uploading every mission to youtube with my custom Shep.

Why not, I just said I could be one of them as I play with Sheploo and beaten the game on insanity, but I'm just too lazy. I'm sure there are other people who can do it that aren't that lazy though.Tlazolteotl wrote...

Yes, because people like that could have just come to the conclusion that the default Shepard simply looks much better than any custom made one, just like I have, and not be bothered with the customization utility only to make inferior Shepards. They might just want to showboat how they play the game and how they kick ass on insanity, you said it yourself, it's not about cutscenes but about haw to play the game and play it well.So you're saying there are people out there that gave enough of a damn about their shepard to expend the effort to show him/her off, while simultaneously not giving enough of a damn about their shepard to customise?

kinda failed with the nose tho, lol
still working on my perfect FemShep, at the moment I'm playing with one from masseffectfaces, but that's my Renegade Femshep, my canon Femshep will look like my first Femshep but I will tune her up a bit I think, since the first one was pretty standard... here she is if anyone cares:
