Babyface... are you friggin serious? That man looks at least as old as James Bond does. His shaved haircut and unshaved face makes him exactly look like how a typical marine looks like.

But seriously, you call this baby face?:

It's very cute that you take a picture of a real human being and pretend that it is Shepard, but it's not, Shepard is virtual and no amount of representation of any given living person is going to be prefect. Marketing Shepard has no scars thanks to plastic surgery and his forehead never wrinkles thanks to Botox. When facial animations are as lifeless as they are in ME and ME2 you have to paint character on to the face, marketing Shepard got none. Hell marketing Shepard doesn't even have crow's feet.

If I were psychologist I would say that a lot of people take issue with playing Sheploo because Mark Vanderloo, being a model, is so much more handsome than they are that roleplaying someone that looks like that, especially giving the romantic situations that occur during the game, makes them a lot more insecure about the way they look in real life.

Of course this applies to male players, it would take going a lot more deeper to explain why certain women would be against portraying male models in roles like this one everytime.

For the very reason you people dislike Sheploo, I actually only play Sheploo.

I play Sheploo because:

1) He looks much better and more detailed than any custom Shepard.
2) He's the mascot of Mass Effect. You'll see him everywhere and in every video. By playing Sheploo I avoid this "this is not my Shepard" feeling, because he IS my Shepard.
3) Sheploo is modeled after Mark van der Loo, a Dutch model. I'm Dutch myself, so I support our Dutch Sheploo! :D

1) no.
2) so, you play him, because "everyone" does? So why do you play RPGs then? Why not just play Crysis or something...
3) one more reason to hate him.. not that he's Dutch, but a fashion model as an elite space marine.. yeah, great, really... :?

1. Well that he looks better is my opinion. That he's more detailed is fact. You can't give a custom face as much details as the default Sheploo face. Like it or not, it's true.

2. You didn't get my point I guess. I don't care what "everyone" does, especially not what "everyone" on the internet does. I care about what BioWare does. Because Sheploo is BioWare's mascot for Mass Effect and use his face for all the adverts, and because I think it's a lovely face (no, I'm not gay), because of that I play Sheploo. He is my Shepard as much as your custom-Shep is your Shepard.
Besides, what's wrong with playing Crysis AND playing Mass Effect? I'm a true gamer, I know when I'm playing a good game, regardless of the genre. I play every genre. So what point are you trying to make really? That only hardcore RPG nerds can play RPGs?

3. I would prefer a 41 years old fashion model guy for my Commander Shepard to a barbie-doll-face (custom) femShep (like most of the femSheps I've seen on this forum) anytime.
Besides, being a fashion model doesn't say anything about how manly you are. He's pretty, but he still looks like a marine to me. Marines aren't always old ugly bastard you know.

Regardless of his level of attractiveness, saying he doesn't look masculine at least in said picture and in game is silly.

1. Still no. The animations worked perfectly on my custom Maleshep and Sheploo has a very "flat" face too, nothing that would really make him look more "real" than most custom Sheps!

2. My guess would be that it is EA who are responsible for the marketing. They also had some almost nude female models do some promo-ads for DAO if I remember correctly.. still, I prefer the characters in DAO to wear real armour (outside the tent that is ) and not run around fighting in outfits that wouldn't protect them at all. Besides I enjoyed Crysis as well, but it is not an RPG and an RPG should not have a standard face.

3. He has a babyface, as has been pointed out by now, not the kind of person I would entrust with saving the Galaxy. Also he's not some marine., he's N7 and later a Spectre.

Your post is funny, because Sheploo actually has more wrinkles around his eyes and on his forehead than most of the custom-male faces.
Shepard has no scars? He has one on his forehead, just like the real Mark van der Loo.
Facial animations are lifeless in ME and ME2? MyeahhhhhhhhhNO. Mass Effect 2 is the closests thing you will when it comes to realistic ingame facial animations and body language. I haven't seen a single game doing a better job so far.
No crow's feet on Sheploo's face? Haha. Maybe you should play the game on a HD TV or on a higher resolution, because again, that guy has more wrinkles around his eyes than almost any custom male-shep.

You should know that EA bought Bioware well before they released ME1 and ever since then they used Sheploo as Mass Effect's icon just like they do now, it's clearly been their thing not EA's.

1. Your opinion.

2. ME1 wasn't even part of EA. It was published by Microsoft Games. Only ME2 is published and marketed by EA. So yeah, EA wasn't even around yet when John "Sheploo" Shepard was created for ME1.

3. Again, your opinion, just your opinion. N7 = marine. And yeah, he's a spectre, so what? What does that have anything to do with how you look?

PS: If you want a babyface, look at this, THIS is a babyface: www.premiumseatsusa.com/concert/Jamie-Cullu/images/Jamie%20Cullum.jpg
That guy is 30 years old (Commander Shepard's age) but he looks even younger then my younger brother.

So you live in stereotypes? Your hero needs to look like a stereotypical bad*ss before you can take him seriously as saviour of the galaxy? Maybe Gears of War is more the game for you then? That game is full with old, bumped-up, big and heavy bad*ss heroes.

PS: I love Gears of War, almost as much as I love Mass Effect.

PPS: May I remind you that our hero Captain Kirk from Star Trek looked like a "babyface fashion model" too? Yet I bet a lot of people here loved that dude.

1. No, that he looks no more real than the others is not a matter of opinion.. he doesn't. Wether you like the face or not, that is opinion.

2. OK, maybe so, but the massive marketing on this one is EA...

3. N7 = most elite unit of the Alliance marines, so no N7 does not just equal marine. And to your babyface pic, yes, that's a babyface too, an even worse one, but that doesn't change the fact that Vanderloo (or however he's spelt) has one as well..

Actually, speaking as a woman, part of the reason I'm very meh over Sheploo is *because* he's not handsome enough to appeal to me. Well, it's more complicated than that... not that he isn't nice, but he's not my type. I prefer more androgynous male characters (think the male cast of Final Fantasy VII) which Sheploo most definitely is NOT. Of course, it didn't take me long to realize that you couldn't make that kind of character anyway (DLC, Bioware, please? ^_^), but at that point, it then became an issue of, "Well, all the male Shepards are going to look a certain way anyway... may as well play around with that and see what I can come up with."

Then when I was fiddling with the presets, I saw a faintly Asian facial structure, and thought, hey, I haven't played an Asian male character before. I made Hikaru Shepard (the smiling bald guy on first page) and... I dunno, the voice just seemed to totally match him. Now it's really bizarre seeing other Shepards open their mouths and "Hikaru's" voice comes out.

I don't really have a problem with Sheploo, though... I just figure that if there's so much control you have over character creation, may as well fiddle with it. Heck, the character creator was part of the reason I tried the game out to begin with!

2. Yes, but that still means that Sheploo was created well before EA became part of it.

3. Most elite unit of the alliance marines... is still a marine. D'uh!
Van der Loo doesn't have a baby face, but if you think he does, fine, that's YOUR OPINION. You see, that's the cool thing about opinions, we ca both have our own.

I think St. Mael *is* Mark Vanderloo, or has such a serious crush on him it offends him that others don't share in his love-fest.

I hate Sheperloo. He looks like a guy I dated once who was a complete douche bag, when I see him in clips I cringe.

Luckily I play femShep, but even more luckily my really lazy husband even takes the time to create his own custom male Sheps so I never have to see default Shep except on commercials.

why do I need Gears of War, thanks to the editor I can make my own badass Shepard (though I wish they'd given us some real haircuts, same for Femsheps, just terrible choice...)?

Whether you like the face or not is certainly a matter of opinion. That the face is more detailed than custom Shep's is a matter of fact and arguing that is just Trooper being obtuse. So we should just call it what it is and leave it at that.

Fair enough, you have your own tastes, but you have to realise that you are in the minority among your gender. I'm certain most women wouldn't kick Mark Vanderloo out of their beds. So my point still stands.
