have you even tried making a custom face? You can change the details and Sheploo's face looks much too "flat" and "clean", that's not detail imao!

In regards to the comments about how Sheploo's face is more detailed than any custom Shep... I may be clueless here, but could that have something to do with the complexion setting? I tend to prefer very clear skinned Shepards (male or female) so I always go to the setting furthest to the left... which yes, does evoke a rather "flat" skinned Shepard. Sheploo, on the other hand, seems to have a rougher, less even skin tone, which definitely makes him look more "detailed." But couldn't you just change the complexion on your custom Shep to get the same effect?

Actually, speaking as a woman, part of the reason I'm very meh over Sheploo is *because* he's not handsome enough to appeal to me. Well, it's more complicated than that... not that he isn't nice, but he's not my type. I prefer more androgynous male characters (think the male cast of Final Fantasy VII) which Sheploo most definitely is NOT. Of course, it didn't take me long to realize that you couldn't make that kind of character anyway (DLC, Bioware, please? ^_^), but at that point, it then became an issue of, "Well, all the male Shepards are going to look a certain way anyway... may as well play around with that and see what I can come up with."

Then when I was fiddling with the presets, I saw a faintly Asian facial structure, and thought, hey, I haven't played an Asian male character before. I made Hikaru Shepard (the smiling bald guy on first page) and... I dunno, the voice just seemed to totally match him. Now it's really bizarre seeing other Shepards open their mouths and "Hikaru's" voice comes out.

I don't really have a problem with Sheploo, though... I just figure that if there's so much control you have over character creation, may as well fiddle with it. Heck, the character creator was part of the reason I tried the game out to begin with!

Fair enough, you have your own tastes, but you have to realise that you are in the minority among your gender. I'm certain most women wouldn't kick Mark Vanderloo out of their beds. So my point still stands.

Hrm, I'm not sure I'm in the minority of my gender... the male cast of FF7 are very, very, VERY popular for a reason, you know. ;-) But having said that, I probably wouldn't kick Vanderloo out of my bed either, any more than I'd kick Commander Hikaru Shepard out.

... of course, they'd have to ask Thane nicely if they could stay. :3

Yeah, the customize options are bad in Mass Effect. The haircuts are all lame except for the shaved-one (even with I play femShep, I'll play a female with a shaved haircut). The eye-options are also stupid and ugly for both male and female, except for 2 or 3 options.

Well, most female characters in ME (including 90% of all custom femSheps) look like plastic dolls, except for Chakwas and Jack.
Sheploo isn't more or less real then any other custom Shepard. In fact, I'd say he's the only real character because they scanned a real human's face for the default Sheploo Shepard.

Finally someone who isn't personally biased.

To bad I don't have ME2 on a PC but on Xbox360, else I would have tried to import both the default and a custom Shepard to 3dsMax and see which one has the most polygons.
I bet my 5buck on it that the Sheploo model has more polygons than any custom Shepard model.

Miranda was also modelled after a real person, though she is a bit dolly and no, fashion models that have no ****** or ass, because the "I haven't eaten in weeks"-look is "in" are no real women. Real women do have ****** and ass and some flesh on their bones... <_<
Also real women don't need beauty OPs and tans and whatever... nothing against a bit of makeup and the likes as long as it fits the person, but come on, are you seriously suggesting fashion models still look like women? To quote 4chan on that topic: "If I wanted women who looked like ten-year-old boys, I'd date ten-year-old boys"...

Again, part of me wonders if you might be onto something, while the other part of me thinks it's just excellent use of a very good setting for complexion?

Well I think I should say that you probably are in the minority, not that that there is anything wrong with that.

It's mostly a matter of cultural differences which depend on what part of the world you come from. For example in my country most women have never even heard of Final Fantasy and androgynous men are VERY unpopular, back in highschool I used to see guys like that get picked on a lot and they were in no way successful with girls. While in a country like Japan a think the situation is very different.

P.S. As for the face detail and polygons, I said this o page 3.

And as for the polys, yes, the flaws aren't always that evident but they
are still there most of the time and the polys never mesh as seamless
as they do in the Sheploo model. The reason for that is, i believe, that
they had to cut down on the poly count for the customizable head models
to allow for easier displacement of polygons and make the editing
utility more user friendly. Customizing would have been much more
difficult on the number of polygons the default model has, or at least
that seems to be case from what I've gathered while trying to make
custom Shepards.

It's obviously not just a matter of complexion, the skin textures are also completely different.

I don't blame you for not really being into fashion, but most fashion models these days are a lot more natural then a few years ago. The whole "skinny to the bone"-look isn't quite as popular anymore as it used to be. Not that I give a f*ck about fashion, though. Just stating some facts here.

I'm just saying that anyone who's human and born with a vagina, is a real woman to me. You have no right to say someone isn't a real woman, unless we're talking about a transsexual ofcourse.

Also, whatever defines a "real" woman, again, all comes down to... you guessed it, personal OPINION.
I for that matter prefer girls with a small cup-size to girls with big balloons.

I guess it's indeed related to which part of the world you come from.
In the Netherlands, people like Mark van der Loo are usually not considered as "babyface", instead, I know a whole lot of female gamers and girls here in my country who think he looks very masculine and smokin' hot.

On the other hand, I also know a lot of girls here who love androgyn boys, like most of the "manga characters" or characters from Japanese RPG's or "anime". In fact, it seems that "girly-boys" are the new trend here among most of the teenage to young-adult girls here. But usually when girls grow older, they're also going to like older men.
Most of my female friends who are 21+ like older, masculine men (like Mark van der Loo), while most of my female friends who are 19 years old or younger, like younger, babyface men.

I'm playing through the game with a custom shep for the first time (my previous three ME2 playthroughs were all with Sheploo), and I have to say I ultimately like Sheploo better. I don't know why, I just do.

Also, 'Sheploo' sounds very strange when you say it out loud.

If you say it out loud, do you say it as "Shep-low" or "Shep-lou" ("ou" pronounced as in "you")?

I know the correct way to pronounce it is "low", but I wonder if many English/American people accidently say "lou".

I don't consider Vanderloo handsome. Well, he looks alright when he isn't trying to be a skinhead.
But THAT particular look I consider horrible. He looks like a prettyboy model playing at looking like a tough guy and with that look he utterly fails at both.
I mean look at that fluff goatee. He looks like a teenage boy who's trying to make himself look old enough to buy beer.

one of the biggest draw for ME for me is the customizability of the everything. you make so many choices throughout the games it feels like your shepard is really YOUR character, and having a custom-looking shepard really enhances this feeling for me.

I'll throw in my support here.

One thing that I'd *really* like to see would be a code for imported faces. I had it perfect in ME1 and it transferred beautifully. But I can't share it with people? Seriously? I have to start from scratch?

I think it's supposed to give you a code and be alterable, but it's bugged. You using the PC version?

Sheploo just doesn't do it for me at all, and I'd do Jacob, so it's not like I'm too picky ;)

If you really think it's worth your time, you can perfectly reconstruct *your* ME1 face in ME2, and get the code.
Just use screenshots, and tweak one feature at a time. That's how I did it.

Posted this back awhile ago in the Characters section, as I stated there, Underwear models do not save galaxies. I hate the stock Shepard model, tried way too hard to be generically handsome when the mixed genetics of the Human Systems Alliance would have turned up something far more varied than that.
