Update physx? just install the latest Nvidia video drivers... You will need a GF8 series or higher card for it any way. Also I have physx disabled and it doesn't hurt my gaming.

While I don't think this would have anything to do with PhysX refusing to install, Zirgey, a 3200 chip is not going to be able to run ME2.

PhysX is on the game disk.  Reinstall it from there.  Next time, find a more useful thread to use.  Your system has no relationship at all to Zirgey's:

Do you actually understand the definition of "Download"?

The PhysX is right there on the game's disk.  It isn't normally necessary to get another one from nVIDIA.  I suspect you used "Download" as if it meant the same thing as "Install".   If you can't offer better information (and use the correct terms), it makes helping you out difficult, if not impossible (yes, I see this is a month old now).

Further, you shouldn't claim that a system "meets requirements" if you do not even understand what your own system has in it.

Wrong.  The game uses the CPU-based PhysX, and it is included.

You don't "play" games on IGPs, you may "play at" running them enough to preview what it will be like with a real video card, however.

ATTN: Gorath Alpha,

What is your suggestion on fixing the drivers when my copy is a digital download?

Delete and re-install, is my assumption. But not the likely choice once you find I am only running at a 56K Connection. That is a download that would take me bout 1 week (4 days on the short end) to completel.

Can i just search for the PhysX Software System driver and install that way, even though im using a HD5840 card?

Really hoping you may have a better answer than Uninstall...D/L and re-install.

Thanx

I am in the Ameican continent, northern hemisphere.  CDST.  Six hours ago, it was midnight, and I had been asleep for nearly an hour.  I'm not a proponent of systems being tied in on anything other than their own LAN when gaming, and don't want Steam for that reason, but Steam does have an automatic repair option.  I am also sensible enough that I wiouldn't want a digital copy of a game using the "medium width" version of "broadband" that my cable company bundles with the standard video channels, let alone if I was still stuck with V90!

However, some game players have had success with the nVIDIA download of PhysX for CPUs.

This doesn't help OP, but i just installed latest Nvidia drivers, and after that, i got the same 'phys X' error. And i can't play, ME2 is installed 'years' ago. Maybe something wrong with newest Phys drivers? Or doesn't game understand newer? i dunno.

There is a difference between the GPU-based PhysX that is with nVIDIA's drivers, and the CPU-based PhysX that the game must run with.  You need the right one (it's on the hard copy game disk), but nVIDIA also has the "real thing", in a newer for-CPUs version (but the newer one isn't always compatible in every case).

Also, AFAIK, the Steam Service's corruption detection looks at the game files and replaces the wrong ones in much the same way, although from the game player's point of view, it's far easier on the user.

I just upgraded to the new Nvidia GTX 465 and I'm getting "failed to initialize the PhysX System" and I have the lastest file installed. I went to the Nvidia websight and downloaded physx file. Tried to install but windows 7 said that I had a newer version already installed. I was hoping there would have been an answer here. I will try to disable Physx.

Don't try using the GPU version of PhysX when this stuff happens. It sometimes seems less stable than the version that comes with the game and that runs on the CPU.

If your Driver is what messed up PhysX, then that would seem to point toward the nVIDIA support site as where to ask.

Gorath thank you for your response. I have since found that the Nvidia has a Control Panel in windows program menu in opening the Nvidia control panel there is a task menu. Starting off in the task menu there is "3D Settings" and one of the three sub titles is "Set PhysX configuration". In that selection it allows three choices of select a processor. First one being Auto-select, second Gforce GTX 465 and the third is CPU. I have tried all three settings with no avail. My other computer system has HD 4850 card and works very well without a glitch and the GTX 465 card I get a "Failed to initialize the physics system". I noticed that the two computer systems has the same exact PhsyXExtension.dll file. Is this were my problem lies? The Nvidia system has the XFX 790i ultra sli MOBO with Intel Q9550 and the ATI card has the ASUS P5E3-pro MOBO with Intel E6500. ME2 is the best ever game I have played on computers since I began working with personal computers from 1983. Its not like I can't play the game when I want I just would like it to work on my new gaming rig. If I find an answer to my problem I will post it here.

Hey Guys,

I just downloaded ME2 from Steam. It was giving me the PhysX System Error. I just installed it from the first link I saw on Google (NVidia's Website), I restarted Steam and my game is now running.

Thanks

Finally found solution because of SpacePollution comment. I had to uninstall the PhysX System 9.10.0514 version and reload PhysX System 9.10.0513. It works, it works, it works. It also fix the problem that I was having with Mafia II that was downloaded from STEAM. Happy am I.

are all you success stories all using ATI cards?

I got mass effect 2 yesterday, got the error, reinstalled, and installed the Physx from the disc.

However, i think the driver might be to old. I'm running 9.09 right now, wondering if i can just use 9.10 from the site.

I got memory dumps a couple days ago, because my HD6850 wasnt updated correctly.  I updated, no more dumps.

Today, I install 9.09, and i get memory dumps, when all last night i was running ME2 fine.  I'm now running memtest to see if its a hardware problem.

Question in tl;dr :

I have an HD6850.
Can i disable physx?
What version should i be using, im using 9.09.
