Was the signal already too late?

Assuming that Loghain had actually made the charge as planned, how much of a difference would there have been? If the consecutive cutscenes of his troops leaving and the Ogre attack chronologically happened as shown, I have my doubts that the reinforcements could have intervened in time to save Cailan from being giga-crunched. Maybe Duncan could have made it through, albeit badly wounded, but I'm pretty sure Cailan was doomed regardless.

What do you people think... and how do you think things would have unfolded if Loghain DID charge?

It's been touched on before, but generally if he did charge they probably still would have been over run. Loghain would have lost a good deal of his men trying to get everyone still alive out, but they would have been too late to save Cailan's life. Hard to say if Duncan would have made it or not.

After all that and provided anyone actually made it out alive from Ostagar, I'd say the situation wouldn't have changed as far as Loghain declaring himself regent. Even if Duncan was alive he'd still say they'd have to stop all threats coming to Ferelden including the Orlesians. I'd think he'd still be paranoid about that, charge or no charge.

Someone in-game (I forget who) said it wouldn't have made any difference, but who knows if he was right or not.

I would like to think that Duncan and the other Grey Wardens knew what they were doing enough so, that they would not have been so out matched.

Welllll, they wouldn't have been outnumbered if the forces from Amaranthine and the forces from Redcliff had actually made it to Ostagar. But since Arl Howe was too busy trying to gain power by killing his Teyrn and Arl Eamon was dying of a poison, neither showed. The Wardens couldn't have predicted either of those events.

I thought they knew that already, but went ahead anyway?  Though it might have been Cailin's doing that they went anyway?

Cailan was pushing for waiting for Orlais, but Loghain wouldn't allow it.

All that and, really, what would they have done with the Darkspawn just knocking at the door?

"Oh! Sorry, could you come back later? Seems we don't have things together here and we're still waiting for some guests to show up so can you come back in, say.... oh.... two weeks? Will that work for you? Great! See you then!"

I don't think Duncan would have made it. If you watch the cut scene, he's badly injured by the ogre - enough that he doesn't pull his weapons out of its carcass and carry on fighting.
