Hi, I have read quite a bunch of the threads adressing this issue and I have tried almost all the suggestions people have made:

Run as administrator (for installing, running the game, everything)...didn't work:(
Run in compatibility mode (tried everything)...nothing worked:(
Updating drivers...all drivers are up to date:?

My specs are the following:

Processor: Intel® Core™2 Duo CPU     P7450  @ 2.13GHz
Clock Speed: 2129 MHz
Physical Memory: 3.96 GB
Display Adapter:Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family
VRAM: 1.76 GB
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium   (6.1.7600)
DirectX: DirectX 10.0

I know that someone will jump and say "Your GPU doesn't support the game" but plz, tell me why can I run in this computer games like DEVIL MAY CRY 4 in the lowest settings smoothly, but ME1 specifically won't work (even though DMC4 came out later than ME1).

In case there's nothing left to do, I have an old computer I want to upgrade. It meets the CPU basic requirements (P4 2.4 GHz) and expanding the RAM to 1.5 GB wouldn't be a huge issue.
Do you think a NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT would be enough to run the game in normal settings?
If not which card (or specs) would do the job? If not NVIDIA, which would be the Radeon that could deliver a similar performance?

are you running the launcher, or the mass effect .exe?

I've tried both.

I can't even get by the config screen. I had a smooth running set up on vista and now with win7 no go.

Hey, just making your prediction come true. :P

I imagine that would do all right. I'd be more worried about the single-core P4 than the GPU.

Do you think that in that case, an improved graphic card wouldn't make a huge difference, in contrast with the CPU's limitations?

The threat of bottlenecking is always exaggerated.  Since you are only asking about a moderate upgrade to a three year old Mainline gaming card, I suspect you know where to get one inexpensively, else you would have asked about a GT 240, the current Geforce front runner in the Mainline class.  The 8600 GT was overshadowed seriously by the 8800 GT and 8800 GTS when they were all new.

Now that the 8800 GT has slipped into the Mainline class, along with its twin, the 9800 GT, it is those, and the GT 240 (& GT 250) that would suffer a greater (percentage) reduction in potential performance from being saddled with such an old and slow Pentium P4.  However, at this point in the lifetimes of all of the various components, the video cards are still readily available, as long as it is PCIe intefaces we are discussing.  Finding a NIB processor upgrade to replace the obsolete old P4 is a different story, and not everyone enjoys shopping for used computer parts on eBay.

P4 is just too slow. I've got a P4 3.2GHz 'round here with a Radeon X1950 Pro. Just for the sake of some actual bottleneck situation analysis, I can download ME1 and 2 here (since my laptop died a week ago), but what I can say so far, most of the games lag no matter how high or low are the game's settings.

The problem arises mainly due to miniscule CPU cache sizes, which is a game-changer for pre-i7 Intel architecture, given the two relatively slow bridges to RAM and PCI devices. If this is pre-PCIe, even worse then.

I'm more than intrigued to see how ME1/2 does with this old rig I'm at now myself.

I haven't played the first installment yet and just finished this one after 56 hours of casual play on the Normal level. Now after reading a bunch of the forums I am interested in buying and playing ME1. I'm assuming that if ME2 runs like silk on my current laptop (ASUS gaming rig) that ME1 will work just fine?

Yes, it should.

Except if you encounter some weird bugs.

ME-1 suffers from a casual conversion / port of the Unreal 3 code for the Xbox360, and was an inefficiently optimized product (EA contracted the port out -- ME-1 apparently hadn't been planned to be made in a PC version by Bioware).. ME-2 runs better, and faster, on similar hardware. The worst thing about ME-1, at least in the hard copy, was the horrible Sony Rootkit version of SecuROM. Thus, buy only the Digital Copy,

P4 is great for Mass Effect.
I can look at a wall with 40-60fps.

Whenever the view distance is more than 5 metres, it drops below 20. The biggest rooms are 3-5 fps...

Um, I didn't mean to hijack a thread, but, regarding P4, It's just too slow. I tried just about everything.

(The reason is that my main computer is in repairs for some time, so I have time for silly experiments.)

I cannot imagine that the slowed communication between a P4 and an 8600 GT video card would ever mean a frame rate less than 25 fps, whatever size room / outdoors scene.  On the other hand, if the P4 is additionally saddled with one of Intel's onboard video chips, I certainly can make such a supposition (3 fps).

Now, I know that this is indead an already dead thread, but I'll necro it instead of making a new thread...

I have, basically, the same problem as TS, running it on a lappy (HP 6530b). Yes, canyourunit whines on how the fact that my graphic card is a lappy one but it does that on all games. But it shouldn't be any problems.

I can start up the game, but once it enters fullscreen mode it instantly crashes. I've read somewhere else that the DLC "bring down the sky" would solve it, BUT since bioware has removed mass effect 1 from the "my games" list, it's impossible to get that free cd key ( http://masseffect.bi...ownthesky.html/ ).

So anyone that has any clues on how I might fix it?

Edit: I might have jumped the gun (I'll give myself an excuse my saying how I've been trying to get it work for a few days now....) BUT is there any other way than contact EA for the key?

First. Please don't necrothread. "I have the same problem" doesn't work as everyones set up is different.

Second. Read the stickies we need all the information about your setup and the issues you are having to be able to help you.

Wild guess? You have some sort of Intel graphics chip and you can't play the game on it. There's no guarentee the game will run on intel graphics chips and they are not officially supported.

machine has an intel "graphics card" by the specs listed at the site above.
You may get it to play, check out the threads on it in the forum, but generally speaking, it is a lost cause.  Intel "graphics cards" are a joke on the best of days and a waste of time the others.
