I'm thinking Barrier, Energy Drain, or Geth Shield Boost. Inferno grenade sounds nice too on paper, but I hear Zaeed uses it a hell of a lot better than Shepard can.
What should my Soldier's bonus power be?

I'd say you probably want to avoid barrier/GSB/Fortification due to the very long cool downs. As for which to take.. None is really needed so it's all about which power you find the most amusing/useful.

Actually, I don't mind geth shield boost on a soldier.
With 1 point, you don't have to hit it unless it's desperate (it fully recharges shields), and maxed you can get +10% damage.
The cooldown is irritating for sure .. but if you know you're about to enter combat, you could always 'pre-buff' and walk in when your powers are just about to recharge.

An active ability fits nice with the soldier's lack of actives. I choose Shield Drain, but Reave, Inferno Grenade and Slam are all viable. Shield Drain seems to do AOE shield damage easier than Overload, and does the same damage, while often bringing your shields up higher than Heavy Charge for Vanguards, even with just 1 point in it. This means that in most situations you can spend more time taking fire.

Id go with AP ammo, Warp ammo, or maybe GSB as a prebuff. In combat adrenalin rush will give you more survivability than any of the shield buffs can, and you really don't want any other powers locking out AR with cooldowns. Reave is the only ability that might be worth it for barrier stripping, but I prefer warp ammo for that job or to just use squaddies with warp when I'm going on a collector mission.

I personally went for inferno grenade, seems to match a soldier and I don't really want a fourth ammo type. I did use Miranda's bonus one for a while, but a biotic power did feel out of place.

I'd say that you shouldn't use one, although if you do, get Inferno Grenade.

If you don't care for lore/rp, then slam is a pretty good option. very fast cooldown, so it lets your AR again soon, and gives the soldier the ability to set up a warp explosion (although only on the lift so you've gotta be quick), or two if you take both thane and miranda. reave is the same, just has a slightly longer cd (also, because reave is that good it draws you away from using your original soldier abilities). If you stick to rp/lore, then ammo powers, fort and inferno grenade are your options, which out of those i'd go for warp ammo. Not AP, because imo, it's not enough of an improvement to get it over inferno, and not shredder, because its terrible.

Reave.
Reave is the total package power, it is devastating on health armors and barriers, it recharges quickly, paralyzes the enemies if you hit their health and heals you if you use it agaisnt organics. Yes it does not detonate...and it is not THAT effective on shields tho it still erodes them well.
What a lot of people underestimate is the health bonus....it DOUBLES your health sometimes putting you on par with grunt! with several of the upgrades for instance my normal health is 350 but after using Reave it is boosted to 730...it lasts a while, at least one full minute..

You don't need anything that makes damage, as a soldier you have something for every situation. Sometimes it will be useful to instantly refresh your shields, so 1 point Fortification/GSB is quite useful.

You're no longer playing a character with a bonus power, though.
You're playing Reave with a bonus Shepard.

Personally I prefer one of the "recharge" skills myself but it really depends on your playstyle. My soldier often deploys forward or makes the risky flank moves. So if I forget a level layout and trigger a new wave that spawns on top of me it's handy to take a recharge skill.
On the other hand if you don't wait until it's too late AR can be used to retreat while you still have health left ....
Also don't forget that you can respec skills. So if you have a bunch of missions in a row against guys with shields then try an Energy Drain. If you're going up against a lot of Bloodpack next then you could respec to GSB. If you fight something else where the layout is favorable then try Reave ... There's tons of things you can do depending on playstyle.
For me I spam AR so much I usually don't want to use my bonus power much unless I really need it. That's why the recharge skills are a good buy IMHO.

For my solider i found all the bonus powers apart from dominate to be redundant as AR+Weapon always seemed a better choice & i've already got inferno ammo so dont need any other type.
So the CC of dominate was the only one which really felt like it added something worth using.

Personally I'm waiting to see what this Flashbang power brings before starting my Soldier playthrough.
